Failure Date: 12/06/2023

The abs and brake lights illuminate as per gm recall 05v379000. This occurs each time the vehicle is driven. I purchased this vehicle on 12/6/2023 from kyle's kars which is a used car dealership in slatington, PA. A warranty was not offered due to the age, however I did purchase a warranty from car shield. This repair would not fall under the warranty guidelines.

4 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2016

This issue occurred in July of 2016 while we were on vacation in florida. We began to lose braking ability until finally the vehicle became almost inoperable, only able to travel at about 20 mph and still be able to stop without hitting anything. One of the steel brakes lines had blown a hole in it. We had a shop repair it and when they tested it, it blew another line. We ended up having all the lines replaced because of the level of corrosion.

7 Service Brakes problem

10 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2011

After towing our travel trailer 60 miles, my wife was backing Suburban into the driveway and pulled forward to adjust the trailer angle and lost all steering. When I went to see what it was doing, noticed that the brakes were also very difficult to operate. Was able to back the trailer into the driveway with much effort to adjust the steering. Hate to think what would have happened if it went while towing a trailer on the highway with the rush hour traffic. Verified fluid was full and belt and pulley were spinning normally. Mechanic suggested to check pulley, was able to move it forward from the power steering unit easily with a screw driver.

11 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2011

The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while attempting to park, the brakes were applied, but the pedal depressed to the floor. The vehicle continued to move forward until crashing into a median. As a result, the median moved and crashed into another vehicle head on. A police report was filed. An independent mechanic examined the vehicle and stated that the brakes lines were completely rusted through. The manufacturer was notified and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. The dealer was made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileages were 110,000.

The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban 1500. The contact was driving approximately 10 mph when the abs system activated independently. He called the manufacturer and was advised that his vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign id number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:anti lock). The vehicle was not repaired and the failure became progressively worse. The failure mileage was 108,650 and the current mileage was 111,821.

13 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/08/2010

The abs system activated for no apparent reason, this is the first time it happened with just the pedal application, on dry pavement under 20 mph. Activated and increased stopping distance, while keeping pedal pressure on. Luckily I try not to follow cars closely. Have had similar problems when hitting a bump, which can activate abs system due to loss of wheel traction. It should not happen on dry pavement, and can cause an accident. Gm should address this problem, I did the previous recall but I still had the problem.

14 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2010

If I am applying the brakes and I go over a rough spot in the road like a bridge seam or speed bump, the antilock brake kicks in and takes away my ability to control the braking system on the car. I have almost rear ended cars in the past because I can not stop once the antilock kicks in. My mechanic cannot find an explanation for this but says he has heard this several times.

15 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2010

While slowing to a stop, the abs brakes on my 2001 Chevrolet Suburban kick in, rendering the brakes ineffective. It started in the spring (WI) so I was unsure as to whether or not it was road conditions, however after the 2nd occurrence on what was a dry road, I took the car in. Brakes were recently redone, but the shop cannot find anything wrong. Still occurring, and yesterday I almost rear-ended someone due to the gap in brake effectiveness. Seems that if I pump them, I can get it to release and brakes then allow me to complete stopping sequence. Have another appt. Tomorrow, but am concerned about safety in our family's vehicle. It doesn't happen at every stop, but randomly, so at this point I am giving the cars ahead of me a good bit of distance to compensate for extra time to stop.

16 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2009

Anti-lock brakes engage at low speeds over 50% of the time. Started in early December. We had early season snows last year. Passed inspection later that month. Had it in for service at local auto service business & no obvious issues. Talked to chevy dealer and they said they'd have to investigate. Recently found gm recall no. 05068, but chevy says I don't have it. I've run over curbs and been close to hitting parked cars & walls.

17 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2009

I have a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban 2500 that has a bad abs module that I have been trying to get replaced since July, so that my abs breaking system will work. The module has been back ordered at the factory since July. This makes for an unsafe vehicle for my wife & family on a daily basis. This week was a very scary week because we were driving through colorado springs and had to stop fast because of traffic and the breaks locked up and the Suburban started to turn sideways, my whole family of 6 was in the car. This is frustrating because there is nothing I can do to get the parts or fix the car.

18 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2009

Our 2001 Chevrolet Suburban is experiencing brake problems which were supposed to be fixed during a 2005 recall of the vehicle. The car is experiencing a sudden activation of anti-lock brakes as described in recall # 05068. I have been told by gm to basically fix it out of my own pocket which I find hard to believe sine they have had recall issues with the same problem.

Failure Date: 01/20/2009

Service brakes,hydraulic,antilock.

20 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2008

The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban. While driving 10 mph, the vehicle took a long time to stop when the brakes were applied. Nhtsa campaign id number 05379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock) was referenced. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and they called a regional GMC representative. GMC would not allow the dealer to repair the vehicle according to the recall because corrosion was not an issue in the contact's home state. No other dealer has inspected the vehicle and no repairs were made. The failure mileage was 65,000 and current mileage was 77,000.

21 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2008

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) the abs computer on my 2001 Chevrolet Suburban failed at just over 70,000 miles. I contacted chevy about this and was told it occurred often and that it wasn't covered. . I have searched the internet and have found numerous other complaints about this same issue and everyone thinks it should be a safety recall issue. Can you please investigate this and get back in touch with me? [xxx].

23 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2003

On June 25th, 2003, my wife hit another car with our 2001 Chevrolet Suburban. The driver of the other vehicle was injured. My wife said that she pressed on the brakes and they went to the floor. Our Suburban slowed but didn't stop. I told her that she needed to remember how heavy the Suburban was and that it was probably because the truck is so heavy and not an issue with the brakes. There was a police report filed, and my wife was ticketed. Early in March 2005 I was driving our Suburban and an oncoming vehicle made a left turn in front of me. I slammed on the brakes and they went to the floor. I turned to the right and missed the other vehicle by inches. Luckily I avoided hitting the other vehicle and nobody was injured. I took the Suburban to a local shop and they suggested flushing and changing the brake fluid, which we did. Last month (September 2005) my wife was driving the Suburban and the brakes did the same thing again. We no longer feel safe driving this vehicle. We are making a 450. 00 car payment on a vehicle that is not safe to drive.
