Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problems of the 2002 Chevrolet Suburban

11 problems related to brake antilock wheel speed sensor have been reported for the 2002 Chevrolet Suburban. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2016

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban 1500. On several occasions, making left and right turns at low speeds, the contact experienced unwanted anti-lock brake system activation without warning. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact diagnosed the vehicle and stated that the wheel speed sensor mounting surface on the bearing needed to be cleaned. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000.

2 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2014

Vehicle braking is intermittently affecting during low speed braking. The abs engages pulsing the brakes and significantly reducing the braking ability at low speeds. The brake lines, calipers, and pads have all been checked or replaced and the problem continues. The speed sensors on both from hubs have been replaced for possible malfunction and the problem continues. I have tried to consistently duplicate the problem on various grades, terrain, turning direction, and speed without success. The failure is intermittent and no warming exists prior to failure.

3 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2011

I own a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban which when braking at low speeds the pedal drops near the floor and the abs causes it to kick back and pulsate this happens on an intermittent basis causing greatly increased stopping distances. These symptoms are consistant with a recall where they sprayed anti corrosion stuff on an abs speed sensor as a fix. This recall was performed on my vehicle 3 years ago at 40k miles now I am experiencing the same problem again @ 78k miles and gm says they are not obligated to perform it again or come up with a more permanent fix.

4 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2011

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban 1500. The contact stated the brakes are failing due to the antilock braking system. Whenever the brakes were applied the abs vibrated excessively causing the occupant to apply more pressure to the brakes in order to stop the vehicle. Nhtsa recall campaign id number: 05v379000, service brakes, hydraulic: antilock was related to the failure which was repaired by the dealer. The dealer removed the wheel speed sensor and thoroughly cleaned the sensor mounting surface on the wheel bearings, applied rust inhibitor and greased the mounting surface. The manufacturer advised her that since the recall repair was performed they are not obligated to repair it a second time. The failure mileage was 160,000.

5 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2010

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban. While the contact was driving approximately between 5-10 mph on normal dry road conditions, the brakes were engaged, followed by an unintended activation of the anti-lock brake system and the vehicle began to roll. The contact was able to stop the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified and they informed the contact that there was a recall under NHTSA campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: anti-lock). However, the VIN was not included in the recall and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000. Updated 2/23/11 the mechanic found both wheel speed sensors had internal failure. Updated 05/06/11.

6 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem

Failure Date: 06/26/2006

The vehicle in question is a 2002 Chevrolet 2500 4x4 Suburban. The vehicle was traveling down the road and without touching the brake pedal the front brakes lock up and the vehicle shakes and is almost uncontrollable to stop. The vehicle is currently at the chevy dealership. They are replacing the speed sensors in the hubs but they are stating that they have never seen this problem.

7 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2006

: the contact stated the abs system activated while traveling 10 mph. The contact received a recall letter #05v379000 regarding the abs wheel speed sensor. The dealer determined the vehicle's problem was with the wheel hub, which was not covered by the recall. Updated 12/01/06.

8 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2005

My wife complained that the brake system was not functioning properly on our 2002 Suburban. Random failures occurred with the abs system at low speed while coming to a stop. Pedal did not respond, pulsed and vibrated. Malfunction of abs brake system was identified as corrosion issue surrounding abs speed sensor mounting surface. Speed sensors were removed and areas cleaned of all corrosion and rust. Electrical readings improved performance of one side (320mvac plus) but did not improve second sensor (less than 200mvac). Further evaluation of the sensor revealed significant warpage to the sensor base attributed to corrosion. Required air gap could not be obtained due to the warped base. Replaced both sensors. Electrical reading on new sensors were greatly improved and no further malfunctions have occurred.

9 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem

Failure Date: 08/12/2005

The brakes on my 2002 Suburban began kicking back during stops on dry clean pavement near the end of the stop. This caused us to drift past stop signs on a number of occasions and caused near collisions in slow moving parking lot driving. I took the vehicle to a local dealer, hawkins Chevrolet Oldsmobile, inc. And was told the abs speed sensor was corroded and not working properly. They replaced the abs speed sensors on the two front wheels on 8/25/05 under invoice ctcs85504. I inquired about whether this would be replaced for free given the obvious safety implications and was told to file a claim with gm customer service. The service rep said that this was normal wear and tear and denied the claim, but registered a complaint under file# 1-355599627 on 8/12/05. I conducted further research on the internet and found a news article about the gm recall for this same defect in canada.

10 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2005

1)light brake pedal application causes pedal push back and minimal braking 2)almost no stopping ability 3)hub w/speed sensor part # 15134584.

11 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2005

(1) unknown events leading up to failure. (2)abs brakes come on inappropriately at low speed making truck stop poorly. (3) dealer will start to correct by cleaning abs speed sensors (?). Will charge for this as there is no recall on this vehicle.
