The vehicle only has ~39,000 miles on it and the transmission went out and the car is not drivable. The dealership said it is a faulty valve body and that the part is on national back order and could take 2 to 6 months or even longer to get the part before they can start work.

Transmission started shifting very hard while in motion. The vehicle shudders while at speed. Extremely loud vibrations coming from under the vehicle. This vehicle only has 75 k miles on it. Mechanic first flushed and changed transmission fluid. Vehicle still shifting and running rough. Mechanic says we have to replace the entire transmission. Vehicle has always had top routine maintenance done. This Suburban is too new to require a new transmission. Chevrolet needs to recall this issue and replace at their cost! lost power while on interstate at 65 mph. Extremely unsafe!!.

The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated upon depression of the accelerator pedal and made an abnormal whining sound. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the torque converter had fractured, and further diagnostic testing was needed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.
Coolant control valve failed and needs replaced. Which left me and my 3 children (one being [xxx] ) stranded on the side of [xxx] for 2 hours before someone could get to us. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Our 2022 Suburban with the diesel motor has had 3 separate incidents where by all accounts the wheels have locked up while driving. The incidents mirror what has been described in the recall n242454440. The first time the incident occurred, we were driving while towing a light load (boat ~2500 lbs) at a steady speed of 60 mph. While driving the vehicle shook violently once, and then again about 2-3 seconds later. I immediately pulled over suspecting that maybe there was an issue with our trailer. After finding nothing we drove home without incident. Shortly after this incident we had the transmission flushed for regular maintenance at about 50,000 miles. Approximately 5-6 months later the second incident occurred. While driving with no trailer, up a mountain in nc at a steady speed of 35 mph, the vehicle shook violently and then again approximately 2-3s later. Each time the vehicle shook a loud "bump" noise would be heard. The road was smooth and was later driven on without issue so it was not the terrain. I once again got out and inspected the vehicle and was unable to find an issue. We drove to where we were staying and immediately took the vehicle to a dealer the following day to be inspected. The dealer found no issues and we did not report any similar problems. The last incident occurred after another 8 months while towing a light utility trailer at a steady speed of 60mph. Same thing happened with a shake and loud bump. However this time it was not followed immediately by an other instance. Those came approximately a minute later and then again after about 10 more minutes. I cannot recreate the issue and it seems to be at complete random and is happening while driving steady rates of speed where the transmission shouldn't be trying to shift. It seems like a safety hazard that could cause an accident.
I have a 2019 chevy Suburban 5. 3l, 6-speed autimatic transmission. I recently started having real bad hesitation while in any gear and can feel it going into any gear real bad. Was quoted filter, fluid and gasket replacement. I had that work done at $459, which didn't fix the problem. Then they said, "it's possibly the clutch. " apparently after talking to a mechanic (who also has the same transmission with problems) and reading reading online, there are a bunch of people having problems with this transmission. This vehicle is only 6 yrs old, it shouldn't be having problems like this. Gm should do a recall on these transmissions. I'm on a fixed income and don't have money to get it fixed.
When attempting to drive from a stop light or stop sign, after taking your foot of the brake, the vehicle intermittently completely turns off. It will not immediately restart and you find yourself stuck in the middle of an intersection creating a safety issue. The vehicle has been in to Chevrolet to have this issue fixed once already and it continues to repeat. I doubt the dealer has been able to replicate the issue as they haven't gotten the vehicle back into the shop after it's been sitting there for a week. There were no warning lights, messages, or other symptoms. It has happened to both myself and my wife, most recently on or about 7/1/25 where it happened to my wife multiple times causing us to leave the vehicle at the dealership for service. Just to be clear, the issue with the vehicle turning off is different from the standard auto stop/start feature.
The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that there was a winding sound coming from underneath the body of the vehicle in the center of the cabin. The tow light was intermittently illuminated without the vehicle being placed in tow mode. The contact stated that while accelerating and shifting gear, the vehicle hesitated and was sluggish while accelerating. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission fluid was black, due to the transmission burning. The mechanic stated that flushing the fluid would cause more issues and advised the contact that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the contact was only quoted the cost for the repair because the vehicle was not covered under warranty. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and confirmed that there was no recall on the vehicle. The manufacturer also confirmed that the VIN was outside of the 60,000 miles warranty. The manufacturer opened a case for the failure. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 77,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the vehicle started shuddering violently, prompting the contact to discontinue driving over 60 mph. Additionally, the contact stated that there was an abnormal clicking sound while making right or left turns. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed, but the cause of the failure could not be determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 122,000.

The transmission prematurely had to be replaced. The vehicle exhibited hesitation and thumping when changing from one gear to the next causing acceleration issues. The transmission exhibited the issue before 100,000 miles. The dealership changed the transmission at a cost to me over $6,000.

Dear NHTSA, I am submitting this complaint to report a recurring and potentially dangerous issue with the transmission in my 2018 Chevrolet Suburban, which I purchased brand new in 2018. At approximately 60,000 miles, I experienced severe transmission issues that led to a complete transmission replacement. Now, at around 133,000 miles, I am encountering the same symptoms once again. The transmission makes a loud clunking noise during acceleration and braking, and shifts gears abruptly and harshly. These symptoms appeared suddenly, with no warning lights or prior alerts. This problem poses a significant safety concern. The vehicle sometimes struggles to accelerate properly, making it dangerous to merge into traffic. Additionally, the forceful shifting makes the vehicle feel unstable and unpredictable, as though something beneath the car might fail while in motion. I transport my husband and our children in this vehicle, and this issue puts all of us at serious risk. I have scheduled another appointment with a gm dealership to inspect the vehicle. However, given that this is a recurring failure involving a critical system, I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this matter as a potential defect affecting other owners of the same model. Thank you for your attention to this serious concern.

The vehicle started rumbling/vibrating/shaking when getting up to speed and at a consistent speed. Brought to an independent service center and was old that the torque converter is failing. No warning lamps or other problems prior to rumbling/vibrating that started on 5/22/25.
The transmission was acting weird and felt like it was revving up and down while going 20-30 mph. After turning into my neighborhood there was a loud clunck like some dropped off the truck and it completely fell out of gear and just rolled to a stop. Shifted it into park, turned the truck off and back on and put it back in drive it went into gear and allowed me to drive to my house but still acted like it was about to drop out of gear completely again. My neighbor has a 2015 silverado and 2017 tahoe and both transmissions did the same thing and had to be replaced, all between 100-125k miles. The blind side system constantly goes off when there’s no threat.

Check engine light came on then : message saying power reduced. Then: service transmission, unable to shift soon. While driving on the highway. Vehicle has been at dealership for a month with no idea on when parts will be available. They say they have no idea on when a valve body part will be available.

This vehicle shifts hard and was identified to have a transmission valve issue. It should be under the same recall that other Chevrolet vehicles have with same issue. On top of this, Chevrolet cannot keep up with demand for this part making only 500 per week. I’ve been told it may be 2 months before I have my vehicle back.
Sat may 3rd we went for tire change from that date since that day, every time we try to start the car there’s always a different warning light the warning light is never the same issue. On may 15 when we received a warning light about transmission we went to the dealership that day they said they were about two weeks backed up but flushed the transmission and paid $504 for the service. Since that day we also received numerous warning light which include. Driver window. Esc. Winshield fluid. Tire pressure. Lift gate open. Forward collision system unavailable. Your 2021 Chevrolet Suburban detects a battery, starter or connection issue. Lastly the check engine light came on and the car won’t start.
The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while stopped, the vehicle was slow to accelerate. The contact stated that the vehicle was shuddering while driving at undisclosed speeds. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was hard to start. While the vehicle was in the driveway, the vehicle failed to start. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a transmission shop, and it was determined that the failure was due to the transmission. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. While her husband was driving at undisclosed speeds, the vehicle hesitated while in third gear. The contact stated that while her husband was driving, the vehicle was shifting hard. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, who confirmed there was no recall and opened a case. The failure mileage was unknown.
Catastrophic transmission failure while brining my children to school. Mechanics states the clutch pack possibly went bed causing the transmission to fail. Vehicle services appropriately. Chevy warranty refused to help claim.
This vehicle has broken down for times now. The latest is from a failed transmission that needed replaced.
After making a left turn on the street and picking up speed to 30mph the vehicle suddenly almost stopped and the engine raved up. It was so dramatic and unexpected that we thought the vehicle behind us was gonna hit us. Now vehicle only drives forward without shifting gears and doesn’t go reverse.
History of transmission shifting issues shortly after purchase (cpo from dealership). Vehicle was taken to two separate dealerships, several times for this issue while still under the 100,000 mile cpo warranty. Dealerships claimed they could not replicate the issue, however problem continued. Now at 1198xx miles, the transmission failed while driving. Was accelerating from stop and and the vehicle bucked, the rpms jumped, the service indicator illuminated, and when the vehicle stuck in limp mode. I spoke with one of the dealerships and explained the history and suggested my vehicle failure was exactly as described in the safety recall and they informed my VIN was not included in any recall or service campaign and the could do nothing for me. I called the gm customer service number, pled my case and was told the same thing.
Valve body issues under powertrain factory warranty. Recall needed due to unreasonable national parts delay.
6. 2l l87 engine failure with 36,000 miles on it. While driving on the highway and attempting to pass another vehicle that was traveling on a 2-lane highway the car suddenly died, and the transmission shifted into neutral. When I noticed the vehicle would not accelerate, I looked down and saw the push to start warning and tried to restart the vehicle with no response. I had to allow the vehicle I was passing to get ahead of me before I could swap back into that lane to get out of the way of oncoming traffic eventually coasting onto the side of the road to a complete stop. The vehicle I was passing slowed down after the engine died not knowing what I was doing and drove right beside me blocking the lane until I signaled for them to go ahead so I could get back into the lane. If the vehicle in the oncoming lane had not slowed down to allow me time to get back into the proper lane a head on collision would have occurred. This 2023 vehicle was purchased used 14days prior from a gm certified dealership and had no warning lamps on the dash and showed no indication a failure was about to occur. The vehicle was driving perfectly normal until the failure occurred. Once the vehicle was towed to the dealership it was determined the engine had failed due to crankshaft bearings. The dealership explained there were no available replacement gm engines and could possibly be a lead time of 6 months before a replacement engine could arrive. I purchased the vehicle for $60,000 and the engine fails 14 days later and now I could be without a vehicle for 6 months and the dealership did not have any loaner vehicles available.
The transmission shift solenoid stopped working going down the road which caused the vehicle to stall. Going from 65mph to dying without any warning signs no check engine no issues driving before. Check engin came on after the fact took it to a parts store to run the code came back with shift solenoid. More then likely need a new transmission for $6k.
Driving on the highway and I started to slow down even while pressing the accelerator. Pulled over and turned the car off and then back on. I was able to almost get to an exit but then it completely stopped moving. Turned it off and on again but car would not move. Not a single light turned on until the last time I attempted to move the car. Had it towed to chevy dealer and transmission was completely out. Had 2 different mechanic places (dealer and private) tell me that it is extremely common once a 2020 Suburban hits around 100k miles. That is completely irresponsible of gm to not put something out so that owners can at least have knowledge that there could be a potential problem. No warning signs, no lights on that is an accident waiting to happen and a potential wrongful death lawsuit coming your way if something isn’t put out.

While driving at normal highway speed, the vehicle speed is suddenly reduced and it feels and sounds like the transmission has shifted into low gear. The following warning light activated: reduced acceleration drive with care. The gm dealership service center stated that the transmission control valve body needed to be replaced. They indicated that this was a known issue. I believe a safety recall should be issued for this defective part.
While driving from work to the gym (03/04/25), I was stuck in traffic due to a wreck; when traffic started moving again, I didn't. It was like it was in neutral and was just sitting there revving the engine. It finally started moving but clearly not functioning properly. A few miles later the check engine light came on with a "reduced acceleration drive with care" message displayed on the dash. I limped it into the parking lot and as I tried to back into a parking space the vehicle stalled and put itself in park. Finally was able to get it into a parking space to wait for a tow truck to have it towed back to the dealership. Chevy dealership has informed us that it needs a torque converter and a valve body (03/06/25) and they will create a "spac case" with gm as it is still under power train warranty. No eta on parts. Supposed to hear from hertz on a rental (no more than $45 coverage a day; so likely not going to get a similar vehicle as a rental); no further news as of today 03/07/25. We bought the vehicle less than a month ago and haven't even made the first payment (other than the down payment); looks like that will occur and we won't even have a car to show for it.
My certified used 2019 chevy Suburban, with all routine maintenance completed, transmission abruptly failed. The vehicle was just serviced the month prior and with no current issues revealed during that appointment. We have never seen a transmission just fail suddenly with no warnings, no light on dash, and the transmission fluid was a good color and with no burn smells. My wife had just been on the 35 freeway and a moment before exited off to where we were going to eat breakfast, had she still been on the freeway, it could have been catastrophic as she had three of my children in the car with her. I researched the internet; gm has had many transmission problems on Suburban and other model cars from 2015-2019 with their currently being a class action on the other models.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while driving at undisclosed speeds, the vehicle hesitated to upshift while the accelerator pedal was depressed, and the vehicle experienced a loss of automotive power. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle failed to shift into the intended gear while the gear shifter was in use. An unknown warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a local service center, where it was diagnosed and determined that there were metal shavings in the engine, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The transmission had been replaced prior to the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 105,000.
The “add engine oil” light kept coming on and I initially thought it was because they forgot to reset it after my oil change because my car wasn’t reading it was due for one. I came to find out that my car is likely burning excess oil, according to the dealership, since all of the oil was gone. Gm says that it’s normal to burn oil and as long as it’s up to 2 quarts between oil changes it’s fine. The dealership recommended that I get oil consumption test and sometimes it burned more oil than normal and other times it did not. We had to go every 1,000 miles which was an issue because it’s our main vehicle for family transportation and sometimes I would have to go under 1,000 miles because we needed it for a longer trip and would be over if waited until we got back. Also, my engine fan was making a very loud noise that would run for a while after my car was turned off and I was told multiple times it was fine until one time they checked it and it was indeed an engine malfunction and my engine would overheat when I went above a certain speed. The first fix wasn’t right and had to go back. I wasn’t burning enough oil to warrant gm to do anything.
Vehicle suddenly died and wont restart. The fuel control module was previously replaced. There was a recall for certain vins but mine wasn't included even though I experienced the failure of the recalled part! this is extremely dangerous for the vehicle to suddenly die under way. In 2022 the fuel control module was replaced after the dangerous failure. The NHTSA recall that was for this part but excluded my vehicle is n212332040. You need to immediately include other vins for this recall! today I experienced the same symptoms. The car died while in gear and running and would not restart. The dealer is diagnosing the issue to determine if it is the same fuel control module. I highly suspect it is. If it isn't, there is another extremely dangerous defect with this vehicle.
My transmission went out at 116,000 miles. We were having intermittent issues since 100k miles.
