Caller says axle on driver's side broke about 1â½ years ago. Dealer examined the other side, then said it was alright. Dealer fixed the problem at manufacturer's expense. Currently, brakes started making a noise, and the passenger's side axle broke. Dealer said it was caller's problem. Manufacturer could not find any records of first owner, and said they will not pay for getting it fixed.

Noticed noise and vibration when in four wheel drive. Chevy dealer inspected and determined that a plastic plug on front differential had failed and drained all of the oil from differential resulting in failure. Chevy has re-designed the faulty part (obviously as a result of many failures). Front differential assembly was replaced. Car was repeatedly returned for service because of no 4x4 function. Eventually, transfer case was removed and inspected only to discover that clutches were completely destroyed from differential failure. Transfer case assembly was replaced. Suburban had 40,000 miles upon initial failure (4,000 out of warranty). Chevy sent owner a check for $600. Reccomend that all Suburban 4x4 owners immediately replace the plastic plug with new design (approx $23 part) or expect failure. Chevy will not accept reponsibility. Old parts are available for inspection.

On Saturday, January 26, while driving, the rear axle separated from the Suburban. The wheel was drug 306 before coming to a stop. There was no warning that failure was immanent. I purchased the new Suburban from les marks 8/30/99. The Suburban was serviced only at les marks. On 1/30/01 the Suburban was repaired at les marks for a thumping noise in the rear end. The les marks service department replaced the case, side gears and flushed the housing.

Friday June 6, 2001 my wife and five kids left from huntsville, al to go to pensacola, FL for the weekend, they got about 250 miles and the rear end blew out on our 1999 chevy Suburban lt k1500. The was a "klunk" as she was travelling 70mph on I-65. There was a dealership in sight, so I had it towed there, and the following Monday I called to get an estimate. I was told the rear end housing had a hole blown through it. They wanted to charge me $1,900 for a used rear end, and $250 for labor. The labor sounded reasonable, but the $1,900 was outrageous. I contacted the chevy dealer in pensacola and located a used rear end with a 12 month parts and labor warranty for $1,200, so I called a flat bed wrecker and paid $220 to have towed to pensacola for repair. I called chevy customer service and filed a complaint against the greenville dealer and on the vehicle itself (file #c04557412). The first cr I spoke with took the information, but was not very helpful beyond that. My own mechanic who repaired the vehicle examined the rear end and said it looked like there was no seal or leakage problem but that something inside just gave out and went through the housing. We had owned a 93, c2500 that had a problem with the rear end seal after 140,000 miles, and that is a little more understandable, but 72,000 miles seems like a very premature death for a rear end to incur an internal failure. I called chevy customer service back and spoke with a judy franco. I told her what the mechanic said about the rear end and she said they would look into it further. She reported doing some investigating and said that there was nothing chevy would do. She and a service rep in pensacola said they doubted that chevy would do anything for me because of the mileage, and because I did not have it repaired at the dealership. Although the rep in pensacola told me that if the vehicle was under 60,000 miles that, it was possible that something could have been done in the way of compensation.
On 8/29/00 my wife was traveling north on hwy 19 between meridian and collinsville ms, at approximately 2:20 p. M. When without any signs of vehicle trouble or malfunction the vehicle suddenly and misteriously when out of control and subsequently hiting another vehicle and running off the highway and over turning and coming to rest on upside down. Thankly my wife was wearing her seatbeat which probably saved her life. According to the highway patrolman that was at the accident scene and and eyewitness the rear axle on our vehicle broke causing a sudden and total loss of control. I have sent an email to general motor corporation regarding this accident but have not heard from anyone as of yet. This was very serious accident that has the appearence of a manufactor's defect. It could have ended in total devistation had my 3 year son or my 5 month son been in the vehicle at the time or if my wife had not being wearing a seat belt . Needless to say this accident needs to be throughly investigated by gm and the NHTSA. Please contact to further discuss this incident.
Aparently the rear axle broke causing the vehicle to go out or control hitting another vehicle, careening off the road and rolling over coming to rest on its top. My wife the driver suffered heavy brusies, cuts and bumps.
Rear axle has been replaced a couple of times due to the axle leaking fluids. Contacted dealer, and the dealer was not willing to do anything.
Rear axle burned up and caused vehicle to stall unexpectedly while driving. This could have caused a crash. Dealer could not determine the problem.
While driving at approx 40 mph car began to shake, make wobbling noise, whole wheel came off, sheared at the pins: lugs: bolts had weathered out. Dealership claims faulty lug bolts. Replaced new axle/rims/tires,this defect can result in an accident.

Vehicle suffers from noticeable vibration which appears to be the result of a design flaw. Dealer also replaced front/rear abs brakes/tires/driveshaft and rear axle.
Had taken vehicle to dealership over 4 times due to the rear axle leaking. Mechanic had them replaced.
Recently we had the vehicle serviced at a independant service (l&l automotive), in the past the vehicle has been serviced a Chevrolet dealership. L&l states on their invoice "found rear brake shoes did not match the drums, it appears that the incorrect rear differential was installed from the facotry, we put drums on that matched the rear shoes/axle". We have continually taken this vehicle to a authroized chevy dealer because we had problems with brakes. Our invoices indicate that at 8947 miles on 7/26/96 we first complained, at 13,829 miles on 9/30/96 burt replaced front brakes (warranty), at 13,829 miles on 9/30/96 burt replaced front brakes, at 20,462 miles on 12/31/96 burt resurfaced rear brake drums (did not detect or tell us of any problems with the drums) and suggested the front brakes needed to be replaced again soon, at 21,575 miles burt replaced front brakes (we paid), at 30,799 miles on 5/29/97 burt replaced front brakes. This is just a sample and shows the problems we attempted to correct with the braking while the vehicle was under warranty. Chevrolet has denied us any responsibility because it is out of warranty, even if the vehicle was incorrect from the factory and even if their authorized dealer had 5 times to detect the problem while still under warranty. I feel that it is their responsibility and that the car is still unsafe. The drums/shoes/differential do not fit the vehicle that we bought. An increase safety problem is we have 2 disabled children, one is classified through the school district as "traumatic brain injury" (unrelated to an auto. Accident). We must have a vehicle that has the strength the carry and stop this 3/4 ton vehicle, which for 82,000 miles has been stopping mainly by front braking. I had to apolized to my wife for the last 3 years on blaming her driving on the brakes! since putting smaller drums to fit the shoes, I do not feel safe in driving this vehicle with my family and especialy pulling our boat or horse trailer.
