Warnings Problems of Chevrolet Tahoe

The component at issue is the engine, which suffered a sudden and catastrophic failure due to unknown causes. At no time prior to this incident were there any warnings, symptoms, or indications of an underlying mechanical defect that would have allowed for preventative action. While operating the vehicle on the highway with my family present, multiple warning indicators activated simultaneously, including a blinking check engine light, traction control light, esc warning, and a forward collision warning. Immediately thereafter, the vehicle experienced a rapid and significant loss of power accompanied by a loud and persistent engine knocking noise, rendering the vehicle unsafe to operate and placing the occupants at risk. It is important to emphasize that traction control and esc systems are not causally related to an engine misfire condition, further supporting that this event was abrupt and not part of a progressive or diagnosable issue. A diagnostic scan performed at that time identified a misfire in cylinder 1. Upon delivery of the vehicle to the dealership for inspection, it was determined that the engine had suffered complete internal failure and was deemed “blown. ” this finding confirms the occurrence of a catastrophic mechanical breakdown. Based on the sudden onset, absence of prior warning, and severity of the failure, there is no reasonable basis to attribute this condition to normal wear and tear, operator misuse, or neglect. Rather, the facts support the conclusion that this was the result of a latent defect or internal mechanical failure beyond the operator’s control. Accordingly, this matter should be addressed under applicable warranty coverage or consumer protection standards.

My truck was driving perfect and I went to pull into a parking lot in arkansas where I live in long story short it started acting funny trying to idle out and then I heard a knocking noise. It happened twice. Then my service esv light come on next my motor light come on then my auto for a collision system failure light come on. It’s on the dash anyway my vehicle is not running around. It has hardly no power and I smell something under the hood from time to time burning it’s kinda like an electrical smell. I’m not sure. I’m not a mechanic. I’m a [xxx]. I’m a [xxx]!!! but I have to have a way back back-and-forth to work and I cannot drive this vehicle. I have been driving it to work and just straight to home and that’s only like a mile from the shop but I need a replacement vehicle I need to sell mine at wholesale value as you guys said you would that would be greatly appreciated. To NHTSA, I am reporting a serious safety defect in my 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe purchased from criswell Chevrolet (gaithersburg, MD). Defects include a documented brake system failure while driving and repeated electrical/shift faults preventing shifting out of park. The issue is ongoing even after the dealer/manufacturer stated it was fixed. Key events: Feb 3, ~12:45 while traveling ~35–39 mph on a five?lane road, brakes failed. I slowed by coasting uphill and using maximum pedal force to ~5–7 mph before stopping. I have video of the incident and two other times this has happened with pictures as the car was in park. Three prior start-up incidents: all dash lights illuminated (including brake failure and forward collison system unavailable); vehicle stuck in park. First required towing; dealer could not replicate despite reported stored codes. Subsequent event stranded my family. I have notified Chevrolet and the dealer; their offer does not address safety or recurrence. Please record this complaint, assess broader risk, and advise on related recalls/investigations. The vehicle has service driver assistance system warning. The seat vibration is not working and I believe there are issues with the sensor and or harness. There have been recalls on previous years of this vehicle for the same thing. There have been a wave of these lately, according to the dealership working on the vehicle. Parts availability is currently low because of this resulting in longer repair times. This is a key safety feature of the vehicle and must be repaired quickly. Unsuspecting users may expect warnings before collisions that may not happen.

Vehicle lost all braking capability while in motion. Vehicle rolled to a stop with no brakes with warnings for brake system failure, no front collision active. Upon restarting the vehicle the warnings didnt not go way for 1hr. 2 hours later the warnings cleared from the information system but codes remains. Vehicle was taken to uptown Chevrolet, slinger WI and was informed of a bad battery as the "cause" of the issue. A bad battery should not result in the loss of braking capability on any vehicle!.

Vehicle was around empty with 40miles remaining and would not start via keyless remote. Upon starting the vehicle all lights on the dashboard came on, this has happened previously and it fixed itself. When this happens, I have 0 brakes. Forward collision unavailable, service brake pads monitor, service traction control, service steering column, but most importantly brake system failure.

Lost power. Engine went into a limp mode. Engine starting knocking loudly and service esc came up on dash along with check engine light. Took it to the dealer and they said a lifter spun and damaged the camshaft. Dealer says it’s not covered by recall. Vehicle has been in chevy dealer garage for 2 weeks and no repair yet.

While driving on I-90 in montana on a clear, sunny day at the posted speed limit of 80 miles per hour for one hour, the vehicle began making knocking noises then, all of a sudden lost power. Upon inspection at the nearest gm dealership service department in butte, mt, I was told something within the engine broke. I have attached an emailed repair bid from the gm service department and have copied and pasted the highlights here: -engine, lines, radiator, water pump, and tune up ($14,400. 00) -cam, lifters, lines, radiator, water pump, and tune up ($11,400. 00) -master cylinder/ebcm ($3,310. 00) previous to the incident, all recommended and routine maintenance was performed at intervals recommended by gm and by gm dealership service departments and/or the valvoline oil change location in missoula, montana. The odometer reading was between 95,000 and 96,000 miles at the time of incident.

While driving to my appointments via the freeway, all of a sudden the vehicle slowed down, I noticed most of the warning lights were on including the check engine light that was blinking. I happened to be near a GMC dealership which previously did repair work on my vehicle and left it with their service center for a diagnostic inspection. A week later my service advisor contacted me with their vehicle condition report that my vehicle had camshaft and internal engine group issues. He quoted repairs but recommended replacing the engine. Repair or engine replacement $21,296. 51. Six months before this issue I had the same issue the warning lights and it resorted in replacing the brake control cylinder. Once repaired no issues/messages or symptoms with my vehicle until this current engine problem/replacement.

Vehicle taken into dealership for maintenance, after car received cars system software malfunctioned. Display screen went black and states "return to dealer. Failed update" due to this issue I don't have access to car settings with most features are unavailable. All warning chimes such as turn signals, park sensor warnings, lane departure warning are inoperable. Had drove miles with turn signal on causing traffic disruption on neighboring lanes.

I drive a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe. This occurrence has happened on three separate occasions and each time it was raining outside. The first occurrence, my vehicle was running and parked in the rain after driving approximately 5 miles. While parked my check engine light came on with a series of warnings: service ecs, service traction control, forward collision system unavailable, reduced acceleration drive with care. Two days later it went away. The second occurrence, I was driving in the rain for approximately 22 miles and briefly parked with my vehicle running. I then turned out of a parking lot and began to accelerate to speed up and the check engine light came on along with all the same messages, this time my vehicle acceleration had seized and wouldn’t go faster than 30 mph. I slowly drove back to the parking lot and turned the vehicle off to let it sit, disconnected the battery and reconnected, and the issues went away. The third occurrence, I was driving on the highway in the rain for approximately 10 miles, I went to merge into a right hand lane, I took my foot off the acceleration peddle to slow down for the merge and as I slightly turned the wheel to the right, my vehicle spun out three times, throwing the back end of the Tahoe into the inner highway wall, which spun me again to face the right direction, next to a highway exit. I then went to accelerate to exit the highway but noticed my vehicle would only coast and realized my engine had cut out at some point. I started the vehicle and exited the highway and parked in a parking lot only feet away from the exit. After I parked I noticed all the same warning lights came back on. Each occurrence happened on [xxx], [xxx], [xxx]. My vehicle was towed to gunn GMC collision center in selma, TX and will be looked at on September 3, 2025 around 8:00am. Truck want go over 62 miles heater comes on full blast truck reduces speed while drive and transmission want shift 4wd error comes on service climate system comes on the power steering error comes on the service esc and washer fluid system error comes on it seems like an electrical manufacture error with the truck.

Went to my car during lunch at work, turned on but car won’t crank up. Screen says service steering column lock, front collision unavailable.

On April 25th, 2025 we were taking our kids to their after school activities when the SUV started to shake, and accelerate very fast by barely pushing the gas pedal, the ets light along with the forward collision warning also appeared on the dashboard along with the check engine light. This prompted my husband to get our vehicle towed to the nearest shop close to the street where our vehicle started having problems. After several days of diagnostics the shop let us know our vehicle needed the following repairs: bank one lifters replacement, head gasket service, and a water pump replacement, we ok'd the repairs. Although these components were replaced, we were informed on may 15, 2025, that the vehicle continues to misfire and now requires a camshaft replacement as well. The total cost of the repair has now risen from $5,182. 16 to $13,549. 79, which is a significant financial burden as the vehicle is just outside of warranty coverage. We are aware that there is an active recall covering similar issues for 2021–2024 Chevrolet Tahoes equipped with 6. 2l engines. However, our 5. 3l engine model is experiencing the same mechanical failures, including misfires, knocking noises, low rpm idling, and performance degradation. There is growing evidence that the valve lifter issues are not limited to the 6. 2l engine variant. Our experience—and the experiences of others reported online—suggests that the 5. 3l l84 engine may also suffer from the same design or manufacturing flaws. We respectfully urge NHTSA to investigate whether this issue warrants expanding the scope of the existing recall to include the 5. 3l engine models, and we ask that GMC/general motors be encouraged to provide assistance. Given the severity and known pattern of these issues, we believe GMC should cover at least 75% of the repair costs, or ideally, offer to perform the repair at no charge. We had a failed lifter that caused bent rods which caused scratches on the crank shaft which caused us to have to replace the engine. After a simple internet search I have found the lifter failure is very common with gms 5. 3 v8. We were told oil needs to be changed at least every 5000 miles although the vehicle prompts you around 7000.

First the front collision warning systems kept coming on and off. Then the engine died on the highway and I had to restart. I drove a little further and it died again and would not restart. I had it towed to the dealer and they are telling me the engine has seized and needs to be replaced. I have 40,000 mile and the car is 2 years old. It was very dangerous to have the car die twice while at speed on the highway.

On [xxx] I was driving in the [xxx] in el paso texas at about [xxx] I was about to enter [xxx} and the vehicle suddenly stopped with no warning! I was able to pull to the side and put the blinkers because the traffic was heavy and could of had a vehicle crash into me if I had not maneuver the vehicle quickly(my two daughters where with me in the vehicle). The vehicle prompted to start the vehicle, which I did so and continued my way. As soon as I was able to get into the [xxx] the check engine light turned on, and the forward collision warning message on the display. I stopped to my nearest autozone to get some help as the vehicle started to make a noise too. They connected their computer and told me that the vehicle was given a message of a faulty cylinder, they told me I should not move the vehicle until I had it inspected on a gm dealership. When driving the dash panel all arrows go to zero, disconnects cruise and just about everything else on your list above. We have had it to the dealer many times over three months and I am concerned that when the system drops out my safety devices that it says check will not work if I’m in a collision. The list is to long to list. Our local Chevrolet dealer is george nahas in the villages florida. Please help.

Vehicle 1 pulled out into vehicle 2s lane and cut them off causing vehicle 2 to slam on the breaks causing my vehicle ( vehicle 3 ) to collide into the back of vehicle 2. No emergency breaking a-curd and no airbags deployed durring contact at rate of speed of 45-60mph. Total damage to vehicle 2 rear end and total damage to vehicle 3 front end.

The infotainment screed goes black. To get it to go on you have to turn the car off, get out of the car with the key fob so the vehicle is completely disconnected and wait 10 to 15 minutes. After it starts working the infotainment systems "crashes" in about 30 to 45 minutes. It is a constant problem. The infotainment system includes all vehicle safety systems settings and speaker. The warnings will not work because the speaker is not working. Also the on star system will not work in case of an emergency. On star uses the infotainment system to work. I can not stop all the time so it dangerous while driving. I took it to the dealer and they said gm knows about the problem but does not have a fix. The problem started near the end of June, 2024. The issue was reproduced by the dealer.

I have had several incidents this past couple months where my forward collision red light indicator will go off for no reason while driving. This literally scares me to brake when I shouldn't have to. Very annoying.

My truck suspension is working smoothly, and every time a hit a small bump in the road. It feels like the wheel is going to feel off. . I have this truck since March .

Caliper became stuck which produced smoke coming from tire. Had the caliper replaced. Then months later my forward collision system activated because a car in front of me stopped abruptly. After the car automatically braked to slow my car down, the brake never released and became stuck and the abs light came on. Replace the abs sensor and two days later the brake engaged on its own while doing 60 mph on the highway. Now whenever the hill assist, collision warning, or anything else is activated, the brake engages and gets stuck. In addition, at times on the highway my brake will engage on its own.

The check engine light came on on my chevy Tahoe, November 2023. The system started to fail it would say for collision not able service esc system. I would bring it into the shop. They would hook it up to the computer and they would say OH nothing wrong we just reset it. Then it started to shut down and it would say proceed with caution, low acceleration, no front and collision service esc and I would have. Luckily I was in a city so I took it to the shop. They gave me a print off. Said there was no technician cleared it. I was able to make it home and I made an appointment. They put it on the computer. They said OH nothing‘s wrong. Everything‘s fine then it did it again and I was going through the mountains. I noticed that my car smelled of gas and that the gas gauge was just sucking fuel and I knew this was a problem. . They finally found out what was going on, but I feel the damage had already been done. The part that got replaced was over $1000. I had to pay out-of-pocket for it. Now my vehicle’s engine is shot.

Braking system becomes inoperable when the brakes are applied at the same time the forward collision system is engaged by the vehicles computer.

On June 1st, I was put in a very dangerous situation while driving on the highway. Out of nowhere, my vehicle’s engine started clicking and immediately converted to a rough in the middle of highway traffic. I was terribly afraid from my life. I was headed to duluth, GA for a meeting but had turn around and drive 31 miles back in rush hour traffic to steve reyman Chevrolet dealership, in cobb county in this condition. I was extremely stressed; afraid that I could potentially be injured in an accident or fire, because of the engine. Several never before seen warning signals appeared. These signals included service esc, service traction control, forward collision system unavailable and the check engine light. I had just had my truck serviced on 5/26, as the dealership had been monitoring the oil consumption of my 2022 Tahoe. By the time, I arrived to the dealership, the service department was closed, so the vehicle was left overnight. I met with the service advisor in the morning and was told there was a cylinder 4 misfire and that a fuel injector and spark plugs was needed. After picking up, my vehicle on June 12th, the issued was not resolved and my vehicle was inoperable. I regularly service my vehicle including recommended service, so I’m not sure how something this extreme could happen. Looking back at my service records, there have been several occurrences where the vehicle stalled out and the dealer blamed the auto/start stop feature or a failed battery. All pretty ridiculous claims for a brand new truck. I’m convinced this vehicle was produced poorly. My truck has 72,325 miles on it, however I came across several forums with new body Tahoes & suburbans with way less mileage (I. E. 4300 miles) that experienced the exact same issue. Attached, you will find all the times, I brought my vehicle in for service for a major concerning issue.

Hi, my truck was ordered may 2021. Came in January 22, 2022 as a 22 model year. Its a 4 wheel drive with the duramax diesel option. Ran great until around 6000 miles where I started to experience a miriad of electril issues including a completely malfunction anti collision system, transmission problems, several electrical problems and worst of all "reduced acceleration" otherwise known as "limp mode" in diesels. The check engine light came on also and my mpg dropped from 18-28 mpg to 12 mpg. The dealer told me that they were backed up with diesel trucks and to hold off. On July 8, 2022, the truck went into limp mode while trying to accerae onto a major highway. I had the horn blown at me and almost got rearended trying to get on the highway. I had nowhere to go and it took me about two minutes to get up to 60mph. I got off the highway and limped to the dealership. The truck spent 122 days in the dealership and despite me trying to lemon the truck, they said it was fixed after around 110 days. I was forced to pick it up. It broke down in the parking lot before I could drive out of the dealership. I am now taking action agaisnt gm. This is not a Chevrolet issue with the dealership but gm. Their factory reps rebuilt some wiring harness in my truck. Something to do with the transmission module. Again, I dont have a problem with the dealer. The truck seems to be running fine but I have notice some strange behavior with the forward anti collision system and the auto brake. It doesn’t work all the time. I can,t tell when it will work and if it works at all. I will be bringing the truck back to the dealership. Now, this is a major problem because im not the only one complaining about the anti collision system. I know someone who says his same year diesel chevy pickup has an issue with the camera not working in the front and he doesn’t trust the anti collision system as well and he is in the business. This is a major problem gm is hiding from the public.

Brake petal is hard and you have to punch very hard to stop at slow speed as in a parking lot or traffic. It will scare you because the vehicle doesn’t want to stop when moving at slow speed. Unsure if it does it in reverse or not.

I purchased this vehicle a few weeks ago. I was told by the salesman that everything worked in the car. I test drove it and the lane departure warning was working so I assumed the forward collision would be working. In real life driving, I have nearly run in to numerous cars as the forward collision does not work. In one instance, someone slammed on their breaks, my collision didn't alert me, thankfully I saw it, but I had to swerve off the road to keep from hitting them. In addition, the cooling seats work, but the heated seats do not work on either side of the front seats. Lastly, I have discovered that my navigation system does not work. I can't get it to change to my current location and the gps is x'd out. This is what I have so far, but sadly, I feel more things are going to happen with this vehicle. I am working with the dealership on the forward collision and heated seats, but don't know if I will get anywhere with them. They have said they will not fix the navigation system, which is affected by the cal (calibration) error message on my screen.

The safety issues with this vehicle all seem to be related to the vehicle park assist and cross track functions. The dealer has attempted on several occasions to fix the vehicle without success. There is usually no warning when theses functions are not working properly except sometimes there is flashing spot on the screen instead of warnings. While the dealer has not been able to duplicate some of the issues, they have witnessed the flashing screen and I have provided videos of the dashboard when in failure mode. While I know one can't rely solely on the park assistance features, the inconsistency of this system poses great risk for pedestrians and property damage. The dealer stated that the manufacturer of my car is aware of this problem but does not have a solution. There have been no accidents to date so the issue is on-going. Description of problems: 1-the park assist system often does not detect large vehicles, walls, trees, etc. That are within inches of my vehicle. On other occasions the alert system works fine. I back the Tahoe into our garage at least once every day. This vehicle does not perform consistently under the same circumstances. Some days the park assist function works well and other days it seems to sense nothing behind me. 2- a flashing white dot sometimes appears in the center of the camera screen when backing up. In most cases the park assist is not functioning when the flashing dot appears. (a video of this condition was provided to the dealer. ) 3-my car is equipped with 2 types of warning signals indicating when there is a potential collision: a. Option 1: vibrating driver’s seat b. Option 2: audible beeps I prefer audible beeps and always select option 2. My truck frequently changes the mode to vibrating seat. This is very disconcerting and annoying when the truck suddenly switches to vibrations unexpectedly. I do not like the vibrating seat and expect the vehicle to retain the setting I choose.

The dashboard for the vehicle loses all power and does not regain power/connectivity. I've had this problem "fixed" 5 times by the chevy dealership and the issues continues. They've replaced the entire dash, checked electrical components, changed out the electrical bank, and the issues continues. Driving down the road at 65 mph to have your dash go out is not only terrifying but extremely dangerous! I have no idea how fast I'm going, how much gas I have, no situational awareness related to vehicles that are close by. . . The entire dash goes out. This is a brand new 2021 chevy Tahoe. . . I bought it with 4 miles on it and within a month of the purchase, the vehicle had this problem.

Traction control and forward collision warning lights stared to go crazy in August 2021 (3800 miles), five months after buying my Tahoe. Sales rep indicated his new 2021 silverado did the same and he was able to get it to reset by turning off and restating his engine. So I did the same and thought my issue may have resolved itself. Yesterday, the warning lights started to go haywire again (6700 miles) this time my vehicle felt as though it was going to stall and was making a clicking noise under the hood. The warning lights continue to flash regardless of how many times I turn on and off the engine. The engine also revs loudly.

We purchased this vehicle on 11/28/20, and on 12/10/20 began receiving multiple error messages and loss of power on the accelerator. Shortly after the error messages began I was no longer to even start the vehicle. It needed to be towed to the dealer and eventually required a full engine replacement, and was out of service for 22 days. On 5/19/21 I was getting on the highway with my wife and 3 young children and began receiving many of the same error messages. The car was brought to the dealership the following day and I found out that this was another major engine issue. They need to order several parts, one of which is on backorder. As of 5/24 it has been out of service for an additional 5 days, bringing the total up to 27 days out of service, and there are currently 4800 miles on the car.

Took delivery of vehicle on Friday, January 29th, 2021. While driving home from Plymouth, MA to concord, nh, I was using the adaptive cruise control. I was traveling between 65mph and 70mph. Roads were completely dry, there were no other cars near me, and there were no obstacles in front of me. I was traveling in the middle lane of a three lane highway. Out of nowhere, the brakes were forcefully applied by the computer which nearly brought the vehicle to a stop in the middle of the interstate. After reaching my destination I noticed that the camera in the driver side mirror was not functioning. Contacted dealer the following day and returned back to dealership to have the vehicle repaired (nearly 2 hour drive). Dealer stated that the issue with the camera and the issue with the automatic braking were related. Picked vehicle up on February 8th after vehicle was supposedly fixed. Arrived home and discovered same issue with camera not functioning. Took to dealer in concord, nh to try to repair again on 2/15/21 and picked up on same day. Dealer found loose pin in connector. Dealer stated that the camera had been replaced in October 2020 before I even owned the vehicle, so someone knew this was an issue. Took vehicle on a drive on 2/17/21. Alert on dash now says �service driver assist system. � I do not feel safe driving this vehicle and my wife does not feel comfortable driving it or letting our twin 3 year old boys ride in it. I have a case open with general motors on this but they have declined to help with exchanging the vehicle. I'm thankful that nobody was riding with me and that no cars were around and that it was not slick when the braking incident occurred because it certainly would have caused an accident.
