36 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2011

Manufacturer : general motors corp. Component(s) : I requests that NHTSA open an investigation into the two safety issues I have listed below. First issue: performance/reliability of the fuel level sensor installed in model year 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer vehicles. My 2005 Trailblazer fuel tank level sensor is defective and could result in a subject vehicle running out of fuel, stall, and being rear ended by another vehicle. Also may 2, 2011 this is a very serious safety issue. Please check into it right away. I was driving my 2005 chevy Trailblazer home tonight and the headlights went out while going down the road. I turned the switch off and back on. Still no lights, turned them off and on and low beam to high beam then they came back on and I was able to drive on home. I could have been killed. My 1995 Lincoln town car had the same problem and it was some kind of recall had to do with the auto timer. Is there some kind of recall to fix the chevy Trailblazer amongst the thousands of complaints that are already against the 2005 chevy trail blazer?.

37 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2011

I have a 2005 chevy Trailblazer. I have had multiple "known" problems with it. The most recent issue is with the gas gauge. When I fill my tank, the gauge shows as empty and dings at me for a few days and then will suddenly jump to 3/4 of a tank. Also, I watch my mileage because I normally refill my tank around 300 miles and it seems to still show that I have 1/4 of a tank at 300 miles. Unless I'm suddenly getting much better gas mileage, this isn't possible, so I fill my tank to be safe. I'm being told this is yet another "known" issue and it will cost another $800 to fix it. I've had 3 "known" issue in the last year and each of them seem to cost $800 to fix. If I run out of gas with my child in the car, it could be very dangerous since most of my driving is done on the interstate or expressway.

38 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/30/2011

2005 chevy Trailblazer, gas gauge does not work all of the time and when it is working it is not accurate, shortly after filling tank, low fuel alarm sounds. The alarm is a distraction, in addition there are times when it indicates there is fuel and the vehicle runs out of gas, the creates a hazard, getting stuck on the highway.

39 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/28/2011

The contact owns 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated whenever dispensing fuel into the fuel tank to its capacity, the fuel gauge would display an inaccurate reading. The failure was continuous. The contact planned to take the vehicle to a local independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not made aware of the problem. The failure mileage was approximately 75,490.

40 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2011

My 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer ran out of fuel when after having a half a tank reading the gauge instantly went to empty and approximately 3 or 4 miles later the tank was empty. Now the gauge is completely dead and reads empty all the time.

41 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2011

When the gas tank is filled,. The fuel gauge reads empty and the low fuel lights will illuminate.

42 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2011

Speedometer quits working intermittently. It will work fine for awhile, and then all of a sudden it says we are traveling 0 miles per hour or the speedometer says we are going slower than our actual speed. Today I filled my gas tank and now my fuel gage says it is on e and the low fuel light is on.

43 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2011

2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer. Consumer writes in regards to problem with fuel tank sensor issue.

44 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2011

The fuel gauge began to be inaccurate. It would occasionally work but not consistently. After about 2 months the gauge stopped working completely. The problem was the sensor in the gas tank malfunctioned and needed replaced. Once the sensor replaced the gas gauge works accurately. The cost of the replacement was $465.

45 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2011

Fuel guage does not work, even when I have a full tank the guage shows almost empty.

46 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2011

There is a Chevrolet issue with the gas gauges that Chevrolet will not take full responsibility for. They are asking customers to pay 1/2 which can cost us to $300 or more for the customer. The gas gauge is registering full then empty without notice. The gauge lights up empty even when the tank is full. We never know how much gas is in the car. I have scheduled an appointment to have this fixed but Chevrolet is not covering the entire cost and this is truly a manufacturer recall.

47 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2011

I purchased the vehicle in February, and the fuel gauge worked fine. A few weeks later, as I was driving, the vehicle stalled. Confused, as the gas gauge read 1/2 a tank remaining, I called a friend to come pick me up. He put gas in the tank, and it started up first try. I made it to a fuel station, and filled the tank. The gauge read half all the way to the station, and when I filled it, it read empty for the first 40-50 miles. Then, the needle floated the range of the gauge. It has been doing this ever since.

48 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2011

After stopping to fill up the gas tank on my vehicle, the fuel gauge registered that my car had no fuel. I filled the tank entirely, to the cost of $64. 00, and when I started the car, the "low fuel" warning appeared. I tried to turning the car off and then on again, but the fuel system still registered that the gas tank was empty. I then tried to reset the internal computer by disconnecting the battery terminal. This also proved ineffective. After driving approximately 15 miles or so, the gas gauge fluctuated between an "empty" reading and a "1/2 tank" reading. Upon stopping finally about 4 miles later (total of approximately 20 miles driven after filling the tank to "full") the fuel gauge went back to an "empty" reading, and has since remained there. I now have no way of knowing how much fuel is in my gas tank aside from tracking my mileage on my trip odometer, and "estimating" as to how much gas has been used, taking into account driving conditions, driving tendencies, highway versus city travel, etc. All factors considered, it is virtually impossible to track how much gas is in my car at all times, which poses a safety risk to myself, any of my passengers, and other drivers.

49 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2011

Gas gauge -2005 chev SUV Trailblazer fill up with gas the hand goes way past full then show I have 3/4 tank then put gas in takes 12 gal.

Failure Date: 03/03/2011

Mr. Sean cummings of kodiak, alaska petitioned the agency in a letter dated November 12, 2011. The petitioner requests that NHTSA open an investigation into the performance/reliability of the fuel level sensor installed in model year 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer vehicles. The petitioner alleges that the fuel tank level sensor is defective and could result in a subject vehicle running out of fuel, stall, and being rear ended by another vehicle. Odi will evaluate the petition for a grant or deny decision.

51 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2011

Gas gauge does not accurately account for what is in the fuel tank. After filling the tank up with gasoline the gauge will go to empty and the low fuel light will come on. The gauge will move from full to empty periodically. Have been using the digital fuel used readout to gauge when I need to refuel.

52 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2011

The fuel gauge fails to function. It indicates a fuel level of between empty to 1/4 tank regardless of the actual fuel level.

53 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2011

Fuel gauge is constantly on empty. Dings constantly. Fill it often because I don't know if it will shut off on me in the middle of the road or not. I have tried putting in 5. 00 or filling the tank. It never goes to full on the gauge. It is getting worse, used to go to half, now only goes to quarter full even when I fill it up.

54 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2011

Just filled my tank on my chevy Trailblazer with fuel and fuel gauge still registered empty and fuel light come on.

55 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2011

2005 chev Trailblazer fuel gauge showa empty with full tank of gas and sometimes it shows 1/4 tank when tank is full.

56 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2011

I received a letter from Chevrolet stating in some vehicles, the fuel level sensor may wear prematurely causing the fuel gauge to read empty after filling the tank. It also states the gauge will eventually stop working. This is exactly what has happened to my truck. It also states that gm will pay 50% of the total cost for an authorized Chevrolet dealer to repair my vehicle. I believe this should be a recall and I should not have to pay anything for it since I am not the only one with a 2005 trail blazer with the same problem.

57 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2011

My fuel sending unit started reading empty when it was full. The needle would go up and down. Never knew if it was right. I actually ran out of gas in my driveway because it said I had a 1/4 tank, when in fact I was on empty!.

58 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2011

The fuel gauge on 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer showed over half full when the vehicle stalled while changing lanes on I-5. There was no accident but it was a very scary situation with no power steering and limited power brakes it was very interesting getting the rig over to the shoulder. Once the vehicle was safely on the shoulder (and I quit shaking) I attempted to restart the vehicle numerous times and it would not restart. I called a tow truck, believing there was a mechanical issue. When the tow truck driver arrived and mentioned that he has seen other incidents where 2005 Trailblazers fuel gauge would appear to have fuel while in fact the tank was empty. I our case we added five gallons of fuel and the vehicle started and I was safely able to drive away.

59 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2011

Driving home from out of state and filled up the tank and the gas guage still read empty and was all over the place. It is not accurate and jumps around. During the drive I was on a road going 50mph and slowed down in a town to 30mph and the speedometer got stuck at 35mph and would not go up or down. I had a 3 hour commute and did not know how fast I was going to 80% of it. Upon researching these issues, it appears to be a frequent issue in this vehicle and is rather expensive to fix, just to have it happen again a year later. This vehicle was previously owned by a family member and was well taken care of.

60 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2011

As I was driving down a narrow and busy country road (because of a detour), my fuel indicator, which read 3/4 full, immediately hit empty and my car stalled out because it was out of gas. Although up until that second the fuel indicator read 3/4 full, I was actually out of gas. I was nearly rear-ended, had no shoulder to escape to and if the people behind me had been following any closer there would have been a several car pile up. As it stood, this incident put many in danger and it was simply a miracle that it didn't cause an accident. After aaa brought me gas, I was able to drive to a gas station and even though I filled the tank, the indicator still read empty. The dealership told me that they'd heard of this many times before but would have to charge me almost $900. 00 parts and labor to fix the issue, as it wasn't covered under any warranty and there was no recall. A few internet searches later and I find I'm one of thousands of people having this issue. Please feel free to use my portion of the tax dollars I paid into the car manufacturer bail-out to issue a recall on this part so they can fix the problem, like any responsible manufacturer should. If it's Toyota having a problem, we are worse then a dog with a bone; if it's an american manufacture, do we have to wait for someone to die over the issue before action is taken? sincerely and dissapointedly yours. . .

61 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2010

Fuel gage drops to empty immediately after filling the tank. It then reads empty and will intermittently go up to 1/2 tank and back to empty. Sometimes when driving and the tank is full it will ding 3 times and flash a low fuel warning.

62 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2010

I purchased a 2005 chevy Trailblazer from a general motors dealer in 2009. Shortly after the purchase our gas gauge started bouncing back and forth from full to empty. When I called the dealership repair center after a few words came out of my mouth the service manager says "OH that's a common problem and we can repair it for about $700 or sometimes it starts working again. I asked why it was not recalled if it's so common and he replied "it's not up to us". I was so irritated that I never tried again. A couple of months later it started working fine, in fact I made a 3600 mile journey with no problem. Tonight I was driving in rush hour traffic and the gauge went from 3/4 tank to zero and my vehicle shut down in the middle of traffic. Aside from almost being rear ended my wife, daughter and I were almost ran over trying to push our vehicle out of the road to safety. I have not repaired or replaced any parts because I am looking for a good automotive attorney.

63 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2010

The fuel gage reads inaccurate readings. This causes problems as to know how much gasoline is available in the vechicle. Upon filling tank the gage will read empty. When driving the gage will read a quater of a tank then drop down to show as empty. There is never a true reading as to how much gasoline is in the vechicle. Also not sure if letting this issue go will cause future issues.

64 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated that the vehicle fuel gauge was defective. The contact mentioned that the gauge would displey that the fuel tank was empty right after refueling. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who offered to pay for half of the repair costs. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 96,780. The dash light will go on and off by themself the door chime does not always work the radio does not always work goes on and off and loud then quite. Updated 11/03/2011.

65 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer. While the gas tank was full, the gas gauge displayed zero. The contact experienced the failure in 2007, and the dealership replaced the fuel sensor. The dealership was contacted and stated that since the fuel sensor was replaced it should not have failed again. The contact will be responsible for the repairs since the warranty expired. The vehicle wasn't repaired. The failure mileage was 35,800 and the current mileages were 88,200. Updated 1/19/2010 updated 03/24/11.

66 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2010

I filled up my gas tank while it still had 1/4 tank of fuel. Once I started the engine the gas gauge went to e with the light coming on while sitting at the gas station. The gauge then pinged from full to empty for the next few days then settling at full when I went up a steep bridge. Since then the fuel gauge has continued to do this every time I fill the tank up. This is a safety issue due to not knowing the fuel level in the tank. This should be fixed as I can see a lot of people all over the us have had the same issues. Gm needs to recall this and fix the issue. My truck is out of warranty due to the years as well as the mileage of just 65,000 miles. This needs to be fixed.

67 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2010

2005 chevy Trailblazer gas gauge does not work properly after 85,000 miles. When the tank is filled it reads empty and only goes to a quarter of a tank after running it.

68 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/12/2010

On or about November 12, 2010 the vehicle owner had the instrument panel replaced. Shortly after replacing the instrument panel at a cost of approximately $550 the gas sensor stopped working. The owner complained to the chevy service department but was told that this was a separate issue and not caused by the replacement of the instrument panel. The owner checked for recalls on the internet but found more complaints for the same issue but no manufacture recall or data on either the instrument panel or gas senor/gauge. Since the gas sensor/gauge/fuel level indicator does not work the vehicle owners have run out of gas at least 3 separate times. 1). A Friday night at 10:00 p. M. On a dark winding road; 2). On a very busy 4-lane thorough fare both vehicle owners and a passenger ran out of gas at a stop light; 3). Most recently was approximately 3-weeks ago. There's no way to know when the gas tank is full or running low on fuel because the "low gas" fuel light stays on most of the time or when the owners do fill-up the tank the gas gauge remains "e". The owners were quoted the cost of repair would be upwards of $500+.

69 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2010
