40 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 11/11/2004

I am going to need to repair my minivan due to the problem with the coolant leak and I really can not afford this and may have to have the van sit until I can. I cannot believe after all the complaints I have read on here that there is not a recall on this or the headlights. I will not purchase another chevy vehicle again because this is a costly repair that is not the consumers responsibility, its obvious that this needs a recall. I do hope you come to your senses about this costly repair to the consumers because I will let every one I possible know that chevy knows about this costly problem but refuses to accept responsibility as I am sure others that have this problem have told numerous people and you sales will drop so low that you will wish you would have had a recall.

44 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Venture

45 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 06/26/2004

Experienced coolant leak into engine. Personal mechanic found that dex-cool had caused excessive corrosion to intake manifold and that gasket had to be replaced. Spent in excess of $500 to repair this. Other people I know say that if the corrosion was bad enough that the cam shaft might break. I am not willing to put my family's lives in jeopardy with an issue that gm is aware of. The fact thta nobody has died from this is no excuse not to recall the gm 3. 4l engine vehicles to repair this problem at no cost to the consumer. Also, the effectiveness of dex-cool needs to be re-evaluated with regards to performance and the affect on engine parts long-term.

46 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 06/26/2004

My family and I were on vacation driving from butler, PA to cape canaveral, florida. I was driving on I-95 near savannah, GA on June 26th when I noticed my temperture gauge was moving up and down. Car never boiled over or loss any anti-freeze. I stopped at a pep boys repair shop at which time they advised me that my thermostat needed replacement. It appeared the dex-cool antifreeze that gm requires to be used turns into a sludge at high temperatures. Entire cooling system was sludged up by the dex-cool. After installing new thermostat and anit-freeze engine was idling rough. Car was taken to Chevrolet dealer nearby - Chevrolet dealer said engine needed replacement. - anti-freeze was entering cylinders #1 and #2. Chevrolet dealer charged over $6,000. I feel Chevrolet dealer overcharged as I was traveling from out of state - my local Chevrolet dealer quoted $3,700 for same work. My local mechanic advised me it's common knowledge that dex-cool is a defective product that has ruined many engines, radiators, heater cores and thermostats - gm refuses to acknowledge the problem while the damage continues. My vehicle was purchased new by me - garage kept - well maintained - 112,000 miles at time of failure.

47 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 05/21/2004

I have a 2001 Chevrolet Venture. The end of last summer the rear air conditioner needed to be fixed. Now the condenser needs to be replaced which is a $500. 00 part a few months after the warranty expired. A CO-worker owns a 2002 Venture. She had to replace the condenser last week and while she was there there were other Ventures there with the same problem. I called my dealership and was informed that they have had several in with the same problem. When I contacted general motors, I was notified that there is no recall. Abviously there's a problem. There's no reason why a three year old vehicle needs to have the air conditioning repaired.

48 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 03/23/2004

Intake manifold leak.

49 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 03/10/2004

I purchased a 1997 Chevrolet Venture in 8/2000. The van had 19,000 miles and I paid 17,900. I am the second owner, and the van has received regular maintenance. I use the van to transport my day care children to their schools. I also use it to transport my children and their friends to and from school sporting events and dance. Last week the coolant light began coming on & off. Also, the temperature gauge began fluctuating between hot and cold, and there was no heat. The garage replaced the thermostat- $130. 00. At the time there appeared to be no coolant mixing with the oil. I drove the van 3 miles to my home with no problems. The very next day while taking the children to school the same thing occurred. After returning the van to the garage, I got the devastating news that it appears to be a head gasket. My mechanic was in disbelief because I take such great care of my van. My day care parents are furious!! I still owe $7,000. On this van and I'm making payments over $300. 00 a month. I recently built a new home and do not have the funds for the repair. To make matters worse, two of my friends just purchased Venturesbased on my reccommendation! they are also considering unloading them ASAP. I was going to trade mine for a warners brothers model later this year. I sold a Jeep cherokee with 100,000+ miles on it for $2000 so that I could get this van. The Jeep was running beautifully. Gm is aware of this problem. There have been ongoing complaints. They need to stand behind their product and recall these vehicles for repair. This may very well be my last gm purchase. My friends, family, and buisness associates have all said that they will not purchase gm products if they choose to do nothing with my van! with modern technology, news spreads fast!! I am deeply disappointed with how gm is handling this situation. Please help. Greatfully, marie marion.

50 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 02/16/2004

2000 chevy Venture v6 47000miles. I recently had leaking intack manifold gasket repaired at dealer ($700). Apparently this is a common problem across the gm product line with this engine. I contacted corporate gm complaint department but they offered no assistance. The van has been in shop once each year for low coolant indication. Had temp switch changed twice. Last year I notice sludge on oil filler cap indicating moisture in oil but dealer did not think it was a problem. I feel this is a common and serious problem gm should be made to recognize and compensate it's customers for.

51 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 02/14/2004

From about 40000 milesproblems with the temp gauge indicating engine running hot when in fact it never was and coolant was adequate mechanic never able to figure out 60000 intake manifold replaced 90000 miles engine losing power and stalling engine block cracked possible and head gasket. Brakes noisy with a grinding feel in the pedal lights on dash on & off abs and coolant low when no problem exists! car pulls to left and hard to steer in a puddle horn almost impossible to activate. Directional and hazard lights flash when brakes applied.

52 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 01/23/2004

Low coolant light came on while wife was driving and she said temperature gauge soared then dropped, she pulled out and drove again and it soared then dropped again along with low coolant light. Saw on the internet this is common for 1998 chevy Venture and others. A lot of minivans with kids and spouses out there encountering this. I checked the engine upon arrival and think it may be an intake manifold gasket failure and have contacted a local service representative.

53 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 01/15/2004

The consumer stated that she took her vehicle to the dealer, to have it checked out after having to stop and refill the vehicle with coolant. She was told by the mechanic that the vehicle had a manifold intake valve crack which caused the coolant to leak.

54 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 01/03/2004

Gm has issued a service bulletin number: 03-06-01-010 in March 2003. This bulletin affects my Chevrolet Venture van and will cost me between $600 and $1500 to repair. Talking to the dealer indicates to me that there are a considerable number of chevy's with this problem.

56 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 12/11/2003

For the 2nd time since the date noted below, I am experiencing intake manifold failure on my 1998 chevy Venture. In 2003 it was replaced while the vehicle was still under warranty at 34,000 miles. Now, just shy of 2 years later, and at 53,000 (at my own expense and a cost of $1200. 00)) it needs to be replaced again. The reason I am contacting you at this time is that gm does not recognize this as a recallable issue with their vehicles. I spoke with glen kuniyuki on 12/7/05, and sylvia jabouin on 12/8/05, at gm customer service. They said that since this was not a recallable issue and until such time that the NHTSA made them recall the vehicles involved, that they simply were not going to recognize that this is a common problem to gm models, and recommended trading it in for a newer model. While researching this problem, I found several websites where many other gm customers are experiencing the same repetitive problem with no satisfaction from the manufacturer. I am providing you with only four, but there are many out there. . Read more...

57 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 12/02/2003

We are experiencing failure of the intake manifold gasket at about 42000 miles. This is a known problem by Chevrolet and thousands upon thousands of people are having this issue. This is a potentially catastrophic failure, as it can lead to severe engine damage by coolant mixing with engine oil. Chevrolet is charging upwards of $1000 for repairs for this known design problem.

58 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 11/06/2003

I had to have a gasket leak on the intake manifold repaired. I understand this is a problem since 1995 occurring in approximately 1 out of 30 vehicles according to my current dealership. My previous mechanic of 15 years (a chevy mechanic for 26 years) also said gm is aware of this frequent gasket leak. I called chevy in detroit to ask for financial assistance for my $1,070 repair and they turned me down due to lack of evidence of a problem.

59 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 10/05/2003

Consumer owns a 1998 Chevrolet Venture. At 55000 miles the intake manifold gasket went out. The vehicle was maintained immaculately. This happened in October 2003. Vehicle was fixed by a dealer on October 10, 2003. He then checked the internet to find that this was a common problem due to a coolant that the manufacturer used. On July 2, 2005 the head gasket failed suddenly, vehicle had 75,000 miles. This was two weeks after a garage had done a 75000 mile check up on vehicle. Well over $40000 was spent. He did further research on the internet to find many other complaints on this issue. He felt this wa a safety issue, and it was endangering the life of his family. He contacted manufacturer, and was told that they would call him back, after not being called back by the manufacturer and him calling manufacture often back they finally made him an offer of a discount on something. He refused the offer,. He felt that the offer was not near what he had spent on repairs that manufacture should have paid for repairs.

60 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 09/30/2003

I have been trying to get my a/c condenser fixed with gm. I have gone through many different representatives and all they say is that there is nothing wrong with the vehicle that are no recalls or nothing, but would like to give me a $2000 gm certificate to the next purchase of a gm vehicle. I have been researching my 2001 Chevrolet Venture van and have found that there are many others with the same problem as mine. The condenser is cracked on the right side. A faulty part. The service bulletin that I found on this part, that gm states that there is no such thing, states that there is an updated part for this condenser. Would you not think if there is an "updated" part there might be something wrong??? also it states that it takes 2 hours to fix, the dealership states it takes 5 hours pretty big difference. I like my van and have no other problems with it. The a/c went out after only having the van 2 years, in which my warranty had already expired like most peoples do. I travel extensively, so warranties do not last long. I enjoy my van. The only thing I'm asking is for a replaced condenser. I think if gm knew there was a problem they should recall this part and be honest when you try to contact them.

61 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 09/15/2003

Coolant lost 3. 4 litre g. M. Engine. Failure of intake manifold gaskets causing overheating and engine repair.

62 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 09/15/2003

As the weather has gotten cooler I tried to use my heating system and just got cold air. The engine temp gauge was going up but I only got cold. Then I noticed that the temp gauge kept climbing and I was afraid it was going to 'redline' and it suddenly dropped to normal and I started to get heat in the car. The problem then kept coming and going as I drove. The car is now in the shop and I am told that it is a leaking intake manifold gasket and will cost me $650 to fix. I only have 59k miles on my car. The shop owner also mentioned that he has seen 'a lot' of this problem in chevy Ventures (and other cars with the same engine) and that he had another one in his garage as we spoke. This sounds like a desing fault that gm should take ownership of. I haven't heard of a recall so I'm faced with paying so I can have a functional car.

63 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 09/10/2003

My Chevrolet 1997 Venture suddenly overheated on my way home from work and the van died. When I did get home I let it set and noticed the coolant was low, which it was never before. Check if often as per the manual. Had it towed to our dealership and now the gaskets are ruined and the heads are worped due to the engine getting so hot!!! there is oil in the coolant!! $1,200. 00 in repairs which we don't have!! gm will do nothing. Have only had the van for 1 year. No warning lights came on it just happened suddenly!!.

64 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 09/01/2003

Low coolant light comes on and off and coolant over-flow is consantley empty with a residue left behind. Low coolant light started coming on at approx. 48000; present mileage 58830. Within the last 2 months I have noticed coolant on my driveway and in my garage. Temperature guage also show signs of over heat.

70 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Venture

Failure Date: 06/20/2003

I bought my 1998 Venture in July. Of 2001. It had 67000 on it. It seemed to have the smell of antifreeze. In June of 2003 our vans intake gasket burst causing coolant to leak into the engine. Apparently this is not unusual plus to make matters worse the average repair bill is at least 6. 6 hours long just for the gasket not including any damage done to the cam shaft (which is hollow in this motor) I would like to see a class action lawsuit against gm on this matter.
