37 Power Train problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 12/17/2024

The Volt experienced a "shift to park" error, preventing it from recognizing when it was in park, even when the gearshift was engaged. While this issue was frustrating, it initially didn’t affect the car’s driving capability. I simply had to wiggle the gearshift until the system registered that it was in park. This problem persisted for a month until one day, the vehicle would no longer shift into any mode, though the "shift to park" message remained on the dashboard. The car turned on but would not accelerate. The issue was eventually repaired at the dealership, a process that took about two weeks. During this time, we were not initially offered a rental car. It was only after we called and insisted that the dealership provided one while waiting for the necessary parts. This issue appeared to be a factory defect. While part of the repair was covered under warranty, we still had to pay $685 out of pocket.

40 Power Train problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 12/02/2024

Loss of propulsion. Vehicle will not start/move. If vehicle does turn on , it will not turn off. Vehicle has been having reduced propulsion issues for multiple years (taken to dealer many times) that dealership has refused to do a hv battery capacity test while under warranty, even after leaving with them for multiple months they claimed they could not replicate error. On day of pickup error presented itself and I showed service advisor and left vehicle for additional testing. Dealer provided explanation of reduced propulsion when in mountain mode as cause even though vehicle was not in mountain mode when error occurred. Dealer performed customer satisfaction gm program # n172130462 update 11/2021 on hv system that stopped propulsion issues (mainly battery capacity concerns) until vehicle was out of warranty. Now vehicle will not turn on/move even though hv battery completely charged. Vehicle is essentially bricked at this point. Will be taking back to dealer 12/30/2024.

41 Power Train problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 11/13/2024

On [xxx], while traveling on [xxx] near rockingham, nc, the car suddenly decelerated, all of the dash warning lights came as well as a 'reduced propulsion' message, stop driving the car immediately. We did, called a tow truck, waited an hour and was towed to diffenbach Chevrolet in rockingham. They found multiple trouble codes and a bulletin saying the egr valve needed to be replaced. (as it happens, these have been on a nationwide backorder for years. ) the technician cleaned the valve and the car limped home after it sat at the dealership for a few weeks. Btw, we missed the iron maiden concert we were headed to charlotte for. We then had the car towed from southport, nc, to jeff gordon chevy in wilmington, nc. They had it for a while and stated the part was on back order and with no eta. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

42 Power Train problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 11/08/2024

On November 8, I was on a 5 hour drive and after 4 hours while driving on the gas engine since the 43 mile electric range was already depleted, a warning suddenly appeared on the dashboard screen - shift to park, something about reduced propulsion and the check engine light came on. I was driving 55 mph on a highway and immediately had no propulsion whatsoever. Tried to pull over and barely got to the edge of the highway with cars and trucks speeding behind me and then around me. On the roadside, the car would turn on and off and I could change gears with the shifter, but no matter what I did the propulsion to move the car would not work. The car had to be towed to the nearest dealership for repairs where it remains.

43 Power Train problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 10/27/2024

While operating my chevy Volt on a los angeles freeway, warning lights came on informing me to park immediately, and that the power propulsion was reduced. The check engine light also came on. At that point the “shift to park” message came on. My car is experiencing the “shift to park” issue. I already had this happen previously in 2023. The repair cost $1,200. There are many, many references to this issue on the internet. The “shift to park” defect is well known in the chevy Volt community. When this happened the second time, ([xxx]), I was stranded on the side of an la freeway. The car will not start. It will cycle through the “shift to park” message on the dashboard and it will not go anywhere. The car initializes, so there is power in the vehicle, but no propulsion. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

44 Power Train problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 10/14/2024

On [xxx], while driving on [xxx] in virginia, the check engine light came on in my chevy Volt. A message on dash said that there was reduced propulsion, and the gas engine quit running. The car switched to battery power, which would not have lasted long enough to get us home. At this point, we were stranded on a very busy highway which seemed quite dangerous. Using battery power, we were able to get off the highway. We then made arrangements to have the car towed, approximately 150 miles to a car dealer/repair business in frederick MD. The vehicle was checked out by the car dealer who identified the egr valve as the problem. However, they did not know when the part would be available , and still, 4 weeks later, do not have any date for availability of the broken part. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

45 Power Train problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 10/09/2024

The vehicle loses power when trying to accelerate when driving in electric mode, and the gas engine kicks on after a second at which point acceleration returns. It occurs when the battery power is high or low. Sometimes a warning pops up on the dash saying speed is limited to a specific mph.

46 Power Train problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 10/04/2024

My 2016 Chevrolet Volt loses power while driving and the "propulsion power reduced" warning message appears. This has happened multiple times in the past few weeks and it is very dangerous losing power while traveling. After taking it to a chevy dealer for service, they advised that it was an internal failure of the becm (battery energy control module) and that it would need replaced. After searching online it appears that this is a common issue with the chevy Volt models from 2016 - 2019. So much so that gm extended a special warranty to cover this failure up to 15yrs and 150,000 miles. Unfortunately for reasons I still don't understand, I was informed that my vehicle is not covered under this special warranty despite it specifically being the year and model that is affected. My vehicle currently has 93k miles and was purchased in 2016. So I am just outside the original 8 year 100k mile warranty but thought I was covered under this new special coverage given that this is an issue that gm is clearly aware of. I was also shocked to find out that there apparently was never a recall for this issue. My wife and child normally take this vehicle across town at highway speeds and I'm lucky the issue only happened to me. I fear for those who brought their vehicles and are not aware of the issue and will be told that theirs isn't covered as well.

47 Power Train problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 09/18/2024

On 9/18/24 I was driving my Chevrolet 2018 Volt on a freeway, traveling at approximately 55 mph while starting to exit the freeway. In the middle of fast-moving traffic, on the freeway offramp and starting to decelerate, the car suddenly displayed a message saying "propulsion power is reduced. " a micro-second later, the displayed message changed to read "action required: shift to park" and in that moment I lost control of the car's powertrain. I continued to break, coming to a slow stop in the middle lane of a multi-lane offramp, with other cars speeding past and around me. I attempted to power the car down and reboot it, moving the gear shift into "park" position as instructed, but nothing changed. The car remained totally inoperable. I was on a slight decline and noticed the car moving forward pulled by gravity, so I steered the car to the farthest right of the offramp/parallel street, where I put my hazard signals on and requested the car be towed to a mechanic. I was endangered because the car lost entire propulsion while in the middle of fast-moving freeway traffic, and fellow motorists were endangered as well. I have learned that this same behavior occurs routinely with 2nd generation Volts; that there is a special bulletin related to the car's bcem * a related class-action lawsuit posed against gm/Chevrolet. I requested Chevrolet take preemptive action to repair the bcem, as I am fearful the issue will repeat and cause additional danger to myself and fellow motorists, but Chevrolet says they cannot repair the part until it is diagnosed as defective. . . Which will occur when/if the part fails again, and I'm already in danger.

48 Power Train problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 09/06/2024

Just purchased and not a week in it dies after I have charged it. I was in drive, at a red light when all of a sudden the car dies. No warning whatsoever. Was not able to turn it on afterwards. Had to get towed to my local Chevrolet dealership that has not been able to fix it for the last month with no eta on a fix.

49 Power Train problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 08/31/2024

Egr valve/cooler fails and makes engine coolant temperature climb above normal operation, leaving you stranded on the side of the road (engine shuts down). I still had battery miles available to pull to the side safely. This is a common issue for these vehicles and gm has not issued a recall or warranty extension for this item like the becm issue.

50 Power Train problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 08/14/2024

Vehicle began exhibiting issues with becm, reduced propulsion/limp home mode with range-extender activation. Car unexpectedly stopped running in the middle of the road, came to a complete stop and unable to move off road under car's propulsion.

51 Power Train problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 08/11/2024

While driving, a warning message came "engine unavailable. " I was able to drive a few more blocks but then the car stopped on its own. This happened despite the fact that the car had almost a full tank of gas. If this had happened on the highway, it would have been very dangerous. Luckily, I was on a fairly empty city street and I simply pulled to the curb. This is a known problem with the chevy Volt (2017). An independent service center confirmed that the original problem is that the egr valve needs replacing. When this is an issue, a fuse often blows and this fuse stops the car from moving. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance rep or others. There was a message that came on a few days before the incident that said "propulsion power is reduced. " an independent service center said the egr valve needs to be replaced. There are no egr valves available; they have been on back order for months. I have an appointment with the chevy dealer for next week, so they can confirm the egr valve needs replacing and I can get on their waitlist to receive an egr valve. This is expected to take 6-12 months or possibly longer. In the meantime, I can drive the car on electric charge but am supposed to avoid engaging the ice engine. If I end up running out of electric charge, I am at risk of once again having the fuse blow and the car failing to move forward. This is ridiculous. Why is gm/chevy not required to provide parts in a timely manner to existing customers to make sure their cars run safely? I am definitely not the only Volt owner experiencing this issue -- there are many people online complaining about the same issue. All of us risk a situation of the car stopping to run at any time.

52 Power Train problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 08/05/2024

While making a 90 mile drive on 7/20, after having depleted the primary battery charge and switched to hybrid mode, a "propulsion power is reduced" warning appeared on the console, along with the check engine light. Other than somewhat reduced power (max displayed of ~40-50 kw), performance otherwise seemed unimpeded. Contacted local dealership to schedule service for earliest available date of 7/26. Car made return 90 mile trip on 7/21 without issue additional issue ("propulsion power is reduced" message remained. ) service identified "numerous codes", but replaced a fuse known to result in the above issue and observed no other issues. Car was driven purely on battery at that time, and for the intervening time until a 170 mile drive on 8/2, where the message and check engine light reappeared, again after battery charge was consumed and car switched to hybrid power mode. Dealership was again contacted to schedule service, slated for the morning of 8/7 (tomorrow, as of this writing). Car reached its destination without further incident. During return 170 mile trip on 8/5, traveling on the highway, car abruptly alerted that the engine was no longer available and entered a severely reduced-power mode. Car had been operating in "mountain mode" (conserving some extra battery charge) as a precaution, so we were able safely exit the highway and pull into a local parking lot, at which point aaa was contacted to tow the car the remaining 120 miles home. Upon arriving home, the car was able to pull into the garage without the "engine not available" alert, but still displaying check engine light and "propulsion power reduced" messages. We have come to understand this is a fairly common issue with generation ii Volts and have been advised by other owners to file this report.

53 Power Train problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 07/13/2024

Purchased the '17 chevy Volt for my daughter on [xxx] with 58,867 miles. On [xxx], 60,600 miles; she was driving on the interstate when the engine temperature spiked, followed by a check engine light and a warning message: "engine unavailable. " the vehicle suddenly lost power when she reduced pressure on the accelerator, causing a rapid reduction in speed. Nearly causing her to lose control. The vehicle's obd codes were scanned at a nearby auto parts store resulting in 30 dtc appearing. I found hundreds of complaints and posts about the f3ua fuse blown and a faulty egr valve. A service bulletin for this issue was published by gm in Feb 2023. I notified the dealership of the issues and the vehicle was brought to deacon jones chevy of clinton, nc on July 16th. The service department informed me that the 12v battery was bad and needed replacement to "correct" the issue, at a cost nearly $550. I asked if the fuse mentioned was blown and was informed that it was not. The check engine light was cleared and my daughter drove home. Before getting home, the check engine light came back on, the temperature spiked, and "propulsion power is reduced. " message appeared. This was accompanied again by a rapid reduction in speed nearly causing a collision. I called the dealership back and informed them of the incident. They requested to have the vehicle brought back to the shop, however, towing was out of the question because the dealership is 70 miles from me & I did not want to drive the car in its condition. I took the vehicle to team chevy in swansboro, nc, who ran proper diagnostics. I was informed the f3ua fuse was blown, caused by a short in the egr valve. The original dealer offered to split the cost, but team chevy said they could get the part & match price. When ordered, it showed the egr valve was backorder with no eta. 6 weeks in and no safe transportation for my daughter and grandson. Significant safety issue with no replacement parts or accountability, ludicrous. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of infor.

54 Power Train problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 07/06/2024

7/6/2024 was driving 45 mph on a busy road (running only on the gas engine of this plug-in hybrid). Propulsion power reduced message showed near the speedometer. My speed was immediately decreased. The check engine light also came on. Despite pressing the gas pedal, the speed could not be maintained and I had to pull off quickly before causing an accident. Luckily, no accident occurred but I fear would could have happened if I wasn't in the right place to pull over quickly. After getting the car towed to a chevy dealership, they diagnosed the problem as being with the hybrid battery - it needs to be replaced. I don't understand why I had a full tank of gas, was running on gas, and that a bad ev battery would cause all propulsion to stop so quickly.

55 Power Train problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 06/29/2024

Driving at highway speeds, check engine light came on with a warning of "reduced propulsion power" and sudden loss of speed in heavy traffic. Dealer diagnosed issue as failed egr valve but is unable to source repair part due to frequency of failure causing years-long backorder.

56 Power Train problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 06/01/2024

The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that while starting and driving at an undisclosed speed, the "reduced propulsion" message was displayed. Additionally, after parking the vehicle, the "shift to park" message was displayed, and the vehicle failed to turn off. The contact pressed the start/stop button and then opened and closed the front driver's side door to turn off the vehicle. The vehicle later failed to charge and start as needed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was determined that the battery energy control module (becm) needed to be replaced; however, the part was on backorder. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 83,574. The VIN was unavailable.

57 Power Train problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 06/01/2024

Mileage: 38523 engine not available service soon propulsion power is reduced fuel range low: 3/4 tank full of gas Saturday, June 1, 2024 - I was driving northbound on the I-680 south of castlewood in northern California. I was driving 70 mph when I suddenly received the error messages above on my dashboard screen. The vehicle immediately had power from 70 mph quickly going below 59 mph. The traffic was extremely high and I had to quickly use my hazard flashes and carefully manuever to the right shoulder of the frwy. The vehicle lost power so quickly I could have easily been rear ended or in a serious vehicle accident. The dealer test drove the vehicle and stated they received the errors at 95 mph. The dealership is recommending I have the entire transmission replaced with the assembly and the 45,000 mile maintenance. No other warning lamps, messages or symptoms or failures occurred. First occurrence June 1, 2024.

58 Power Train problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 05/18/2024

Two incidents related to the powertrain. 1) in December, 2023, the ev battery was drained and the car would not start based on the gas motor. The dealer fixed it in our recollection. 2) on 5/18/24, I was driving the car out of a detroit convention center parking lot, going up the ramp when the car, with no warning, completely lost power and stopped. The message on the display said "powertrain loss" or "powertrain lost. " I wish I had taken a photo of it, but I was panicked. Cars were backed up behind me on the ramp out of the parking garage, honking and having to back up. I tried turning the car off and on, googling the problem, and was about to call a tow truck when after 12-13 minutes, I was able to restart the car. I was scared that this could happen again on the freeway. When we could do it together, my husband and I took the car to Chevrolet suburban of ann arbor, which says that they can find nothing wrong with the car, cannot replicate the problem, and that the car computer does not have any error code. They and gm are not willing to do anything to fix it. If they are really unable to find an error code, then something is wrong with the car computer too. I will not drive that car again until it is fixed - I consider it to be risking my life and others' lives to do so. We are spending a lot of money leasing a replacement vehicle as they will not even give us a loaner. The car is just sitting in their lot. And if we trade it in, will they resell it to someone else, potentially putting their lives at risk? - the vehicle is available for inspection at Chevrolet suburban ann arbor. - my safety was at risk. So was that of other drivers around me. I could have been rear-ended. - the problem has not been reproduced/confirmed. - the vehicle and component have not been inspected by the manufacturer, police etc to our knowledge. - there was no warning ahead of time and no symptoms prior to the problem. The warning message displayed simultaneously with the problem.

59 Power Train problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 05/01/2024

When attempting to power down car after shifting into park, message states shift to park. Car cannot be locked or secured.

60 Power Train problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 04/26/2024

On April 26, 2024 while driving with my son in in on rt. 80/90 to my niece's wedding in PA, a reduced power warning sounded on the driver's console. Was able to stop and get gas at the eastbound travel plaza near mile marker 126. Getting back on the road and accelerating toward 70 mph, suddenly lost all drive power. The fuel gauge side of the console was lit in yellow and said something like "no fuel detected. " pulled over to the shoulder and found the engine would start, run, and then die. An in state police officer was kind enough to offer us an escort to the next exit near mile marker 144. Noticed that the engine would remain running for longer periods and finally stayed on continuously. While being escorted, was able to run the speed up to 55 mph and made it safely to the interstate exit. During this time my son was checking online and found that the problem might be due a blown fuse. At the 144 exit we found a pilot station that carried fuse sets. One of the sets had the fuse we needed. We bought two sets. We replaced the fuse--it had blown--and the car ran well again. This fuse is called "no walk home. " we were able to continue on at 70 mph until stopping at a friends home in western PA for a few hours rest. While at our friend's home we partially charged the Volt's battery giving us about 20 miles of electric range. While in electric mode we stopped for gas. We drove through the mountains without incident then stopped for gas again in central PA at the cumberland valley service plaza. Filled the tank and while accelerating from the plaza again lost power and had to pull over. Replacing the fuse solved the problem once more. It appeared that turning off the engine while in gas mode and then turning the engine back on leads to the fuse blowing. That Sunday on the return trip to IL, I never turned the car off when refueling. This got me back home without incident.

61 Power Train problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 04/26/2024

Driving at highway speed car would slow down on its own and go into "reduced propulsion mode".

62 Power Train problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 03/22/2024

63 Power Train problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 03/21/2024

Gm issued a special coverage warranty for 2016-2018 Chevrolet Volts that had a becm failure. However, they did not include all of the Volts. We have a 2016 that has a catastrophic becm failure. The car won't start and the only indicator was the day before it said the vehicle didn't charge. This appears to be the same issue, but Chevrolet did not include our model. We have about 87k miles and are only 3 weeks past the original warranty.

64 Power Train problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 03/13/2024

66 Power Train problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 03/09/2024

My 2018 chevy Volt displayed a warning message of "propulsion power is reduced" on the dash when I started the car in a parking garage on Saturday, March 9th around 10am. The car would not drive normally and made a strange noise. I had to stop and start the car six or so times before it drove normally for me to get home. Had this happened at high speed, it could have caused an accident or worse. I contacted the local rockville, MD Chevrolet dealership and they ran the diagnostic test on the becm and hpcm2 systems and performed battery capacity reset. I do not believe this software reset will correct the technical issue. According to the dealership records, such a software reset was performed in 2021 by the previous owner before we purchased the car second hand in July, 2022. The dealer would not replace the becm unit but there is supposedly a special coverage bulletin issued by general motors. We need the unit replaced ASAP for safety.

67 Power Train problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 03/06/2024

Sudden loss of power. Driving on freeway. Speed decreased by 25 mph. Just about avoided a rear end accident. Have seen that 2016 onwards Volts have experienced this malfunction. Request that it be noted that this is a 2013 model with less than 60,000 miles. Have already had the latest programming done by chevy.

68 Power Train problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 03/01/2024

My car is lurching very dramatically while on battery-only. Especially over 35-40 miles an hour. I was run off the road last week and am becoming fearful for my safety in this car. I have heard that there may be something wrong with the battery or. Becm.

69 Power Train problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 02/24/2024

Chevy Volts from 2016 - 2019 all have a manufacturing defect which can prevent the driver from powering - the error message is "shift to park". Gm released a Volt service bulletin in may 2021 but offered no assistance to replace the defective part. On 2/24/24 I was driving home on hwy 17 headed nb from santa cruz in fair weather in the afternoon. This highway can be dangerous with limited shoulders and poor visibility, making it an unsafe place to pull over. While traveling at about 55 mph, the car made an alert sound and illuminated the check engine light and presented a message "shift to park". I was running out of room on the shoulder to pull off safely so I had to make the quick decision to pull off to the left-hand shoulder. I followed the instructions on the display which said to shift into park, followed by shifting back into drive. During this time I had my foot on the brake, but after removing my foot from the break, the vehicle began to roll towards traffic, so I put my foot back on the break. I tried powering the car off/on multiple times and tried to get the car to go back into drive but was unsuccessful. Eventually, I put the car back into park, called a tow truck driver, and waited for over an hour to have my car safely towed off hwy 17. Prior to this, I had not experienced any of these or similar symptoms. An obd code scan was done (screenshot attached). Once at the chevy dealership, they confirmed that the car could, at that time, shift into park and were not able to reproduce the "shift into park" issue. However, they reported that the car was revving high and the transmission would not shift into the proper gear ratio. The dealership was not able to fully diagnose the problem and instead suggested to replace the entire transmission as assembly and then continue investigating. We reached out to the manufacturer, Chevrolet/gm, about the issue(s) and were ed case # 9-12088007445 while they work with the dealership to investigate further.

70 Power Train problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 02/13/2024

I am writing to report a series of safety concerns regarding my 2017 chevy Volt, which have persisted despite multiple attempts to address them with the dealership. These issues pose significant risks to my safety and that of others on the road. On January 18th, 2024, I brought my vehicle to the provo utah Chevrolet dealer after experiencing reduced propulsion power while driving on the highway, coupled with the illumination of the check engine light. The mechanic performed a quick inspection and used a gm scan tool to diagnose the issue, revealing the code p1e00 for the hybrid powertrain control module 2, which was cleared without a thorough investigation. I was advised to return if the issue reoccurred. Despite the reset, the problem persisted, and on February 9th, 2024, I scheduled another appointment due to my chevy Volt's high Voltage battery charging only to 65% capacity despite indicating a full charge. However, upon arriving for the appointment at 4:00 pm, I was informed that the hybrid mechanic had left for the day, and I was asked to return on another day. Subsequently, on February 11th, 2024, the check engine light illuminated again, and on February 12th, 2024, while driving to work, I experienced a loss of propulsion power on the highway, placing my safety at risk. These ongoing issues with propulsion power and the high-voltage battery charging system are not only inconvenient but also potentially dangerous. Despite multiple visits to the dealership and attempts to diagnose and resolve the problem, it persists, indicating a systemic issue that requires immediate attention. I urge the national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA) to investigate this matter thoroughly to ensure the safety of chevy Volt drivers and passengers. It is imperative that general motors addresses these issues promptly and implements appropriate measures to prevent further incidents.
