The air bag warning light keeps going on and off randomly for different lengths of time. I looked up the problem online and it seems like I'm not the only one with this issue and that it has been reported multiple times before. The light normally turns on while the car is in motion. I have not taken it to the mechanic yet because, according to the article I saw regarding similar complaints, sometimes the mechanics can't figure it out if the problem can't be reproduced at the time. I know that this is a problem for this car though and has been reported multiple times.

Repair air bag warning light keeps going on. It is due to the passenger seat sensor. If there is no one on the seat, the light will remain off but the moment any pressure is applied to the seat, the warning light comes off. It appears the seat airbag sensor mat is failing which is concerning because this is a significant safety issue that is costly to repair. The light will turn on regardless if the vehicle is stationary or moving. Per online research, it appears this is a well known and documented issue that other Volt owners are reporting.

Service airbag warning light now stays on permanently. Dealer inspection reveals the front passenger seat passenger discriminating sensor needs to be replaced. Estimated cost is $900. 00 +/- this seat has never been wet or damaged, the vehicle has not been in any accident where the airbags deployed.
Airbag warning light and "service airbag soon" appears on dash. Vehicle is not in motion or is in low-speed travel only when light/ notification appears. Light/ notification disappears within a few seconds. Issue only appears to happen when temperature inside vehicle is extremely high (leading me to believe that expansion of cushion/ seat material in high heat may be causing weak contact activations. G-force when accelerating/ decelerating may be causing sensor/ seat material to move/ shift in such a way to release weak contact). Brought to dealer for $200 diagnosis. Reported problem as passenger seat next-gen airbag sensor module failing. Cost to repair $1200+ reviewed many online forums and posts returning same issue and cost for repair for Chevrolet vehicles in same model and platform range (malibu, impala, Volt, cruze).
A warning light appears sporadically reporting that the passenger airbag needs to be serviced. If the passenger wiggles around, the airbag will turn on and the warning light goes out.
The passenger seat airbag sensor has gone bad an constantly goes on and off even when there is nothing or nobody in the seat. I have read kn forums and it is a very common issue with the first few years of the Volt, and it is a quite expensive fix. I have recieved quotes ranging from $850 - $1200 to replace it. The service airbag light usually goes off and notifies me as soon as I start the car unless there is a person sitting in the passenger seat before I start. Ic it does not trigger the light when I start, then it will trigger the warning light when the passenger moves even slightly. The seat has never been wet or abused.
I am receiving a warning light regarding my airbag sensor. This comes on everytime I start my car as similar to other reported cases in the same model year of the chevy Volt. This happens on ignition and occasionally during driving.
Service airbags warning light on dashboard with no cause. Seat and interior has not been exposed to water. Many other owners have expressed this problem. No codes indicate anything to isolate what part of the system is affected.
Intermittent passenger side airbag warning light illumination. The warning light comes on when very light items are placed on the seat and when a passenger is present.
Air bag warning light sporadically comes on. Usually goes off when there is a passenger or sometimes will go off if I hit s bump. Already invested $309 for the mechanic at the chevy dealer to tell me something needed to be greased which did nothing to help solve the issue.
Warning of faulty air bag on passenger side. Warning light will come on at times even if passenger seat is empty. This warning comes on at times when the vehicle is in motion and at other times when stationary.
Air bag warning light is illuminated due to a failed sensor in the passenger seat. Had to replace with a used seat.
The airbag warning light comes on fairly constantly. The dealership says the passenger seat sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced. It is an expensive repair at over $1,000.
Tl-the contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that the air bag warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed nor repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were contacted or notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000. The VIN was not provided. Ah.
My 2013 chevy Volt has recently experienced some airbag warning light issues. The airbag light comes on for stretches of time and then disappears on its own. I drive 90% of the time without a front passenger and the airbag light has no pattern to when it comes on or goes off. It is completely random. . Read more...
Tl- the contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that the service air bag warning light intermittently illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for a diagnostic test or repairs. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 48,941. Dr.
I started receiving a passenger airbag warning light on my dash. It seemed to happen mostly if I set something on the passenger seat and then removed it. I took it to the dealer and they said a sensor in the seat needed to be replaced and it was $1100.
Passenger seat airbag sensor went bag resulting in the car throwing a "service airbag" warning light. Cost over 800 dollars to fix, have heard from the dealer and on Volt forums online that this is a very common problem and should be a recall.
I have less than 40,000 miles in this vehicle. At approximately 35000 miles the warning light went on saying the airbag sensor was not working. I understand that a case has been opened and I would like to add my name to that case.
I am getting an airbag warning light caused by a faulty passenger presence module. If I have a passenger riding with me, the warning light will go on and off sometimes caused by hitting bumps in the road. When the light is on though, it says the passenger airbag is off which is a very big safety concern. The vehicle has never been in a wreck or had any liquid spilled on the seat.
Service air bag warning light came on. Took it in to dealer who reported the air bag sensor for the passenger seat is no longer working. Replacement plus labor quoted at $1000. This car is a 2013, the air bag sensor should not break so quickly.
"service airbag" warning light and console message appears intermittently, mainly in warm weather. Dealer says it will cost $1100 to fix definitively - for 3 years. This appears to be the only way gm will guarantee the airbag will inflate. Many other Volt owners on the gm Volt forum (https://gm-volt. Com/forum/) have had this problem and at least one has filed a complaint with you.
Passenger front seat occupancy sensor malfunctions which triggers the air bag warning light and disables the passenger front air bags. This randomly occurs when no one is in the seat and it will happen if the seat is occupied and the person in the seat moves.
Passenger airbag warning light on 2013 Volt started going on and off a few months after purchasing the car. Continued to get more frequent over time until it stayed on consistently. Took to gm dealer on 9/5/18 at 37,944 mileage and paid $130 for diagnosis. Dealer stated the passenger present sensor needed replacement, the repair was out of warranty and quoted an additional $1082. 26 to repair. Since it was a safety component of the car, I complained to gm management directly under a case#, but they refused to repair on 10/12/18. Still a serious concern today at 54,183 mileage. Documentation available if needed.
Airbag warning light and passenger air bag. Was told by a dealer that it was the passenger detection sensor not working and needs a 1,000 dollar fix to replace the sensor. Air bag system will not enable with full size passenger in front seat.
Airbag problem warning light. Dealer said there is likely a problem with the passenger sensor in the seat and I would have to pay $1200 but that might not fix the problem. We declined the service. I have since read about many more Volt owners with this problem. Ours started around 80,000 miles. We are currently around $120000 miles.
The contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that the passenger's side air bag warning light would intermittently illuminate with an occupant seated in the passenger's seat. The contact took the vehicle to bob bell Chevrolet of bel air (1230 belair rd, bel air, MD 21014) where they diagnosed the vehicle with a defective passenger side air bag sensor. The contact was given an estimate for repair which he declined. Recently, the contact stated that the passenger's side air bag warning light would remain illuminated with or without an occupant seated in the passenger's seat. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.
Service air bag warning light is on. Took it to the dealer, they said it was the passenger seat sensor, and would cost $800 to fix. The warning light was intermittent, but now it is on all the time. And the warning beeping sound continues almost constantly while driving the car. Very annoying. The air bag is not on even when a passenger is in the front seat. Very dangerous situation in the event of an accident, and should be recalled and fixed by gm. I don't want to take passengers in the car because I fear for their safety. The car has 120k miles on it. The issue is present in all driving and parked situations. I have read on many forms online, that this is a pretty prevalent issue with many Volt owners and is in definitely need of some attention. The issue started back in the beginning of 2018 and is still a problem as of Jan 2020. The cost to fix the issue is too prohibitive for me.
The vehicle would issue a warning ding with a dashboard indicator saying, "service airbag. " the dashboard airbag warning light would then illuminate. The warning would remain on for several minutes, then the warning light would extinguish. Initially the warning light would only illuminate when a passenger was riding in the front passenger seat, and even then would only happen infrequently. Over a six month period of time the airbag warning would occur more frequently, and eventually would illuminate even when a passenger was not in the vehicle. The dealership blamed the condition on either 1) the seat getting wet and damaging the sensor (which has never happened), or 2) the repeated act of placing my 10-20lb laptop backpack on the passenger seat (wouldn't a 200 lb passengers be more likely to damage a sensor than a 20lb backpack?).
Airbag warning light due to seat sensor has been on since 40000 miles. Took it to dealer and they said it's out of warranty will cost 1000. At the time the warning was frequent but intermittent. Now the warning is all of the time. Multiple Volt owners online have complained about this issue. Please investigate.
The air bag sensor warning light is on and air bag will not work for passenger seats. Per the dealership there is an issue with the airbag sensor that they are aware of the cost of repair is 800. To replace the airbag sensor module. They said placing a cell phone or laptop on the seat causes the malfunction but there is no recall at this point. I can't believe placing an electronic on a seat causes the module to go bad and they will not replace the module.
