I had both front strut assemblies replaced and a 4 wheel alignment. While driving home the vehicle continued to pull to the right. I returned the car to the shop and upon investigating further I was told the rack pinion assemble failed and needed to be replaced. The original $850 job became a $1750 job.

Oct 2013 five months after I just had my car fixed . As I was driving through the green light I heard a noise like grinding my car stopped I could not go forward or backward, I was stopped in the far right lane of a three lane street I had to put on my flashers. I could not be move only by a tow truck. I had just had tire rods changed in may 2013 and rack n pinion fixed in may which that broke as I was backing out of a parking spot had to be towed. As I was taking the car to the dealership that had fixed it. Tow truck driver noticed tire rod bracket had broke as he was putting car down into parking area. So what I paid to get fix was broke again part could have been defected tire rod bracket. With my family I could have been hurt if I had been on the freeway.

Alignment has been off for about 2 years. Took to my mechanic friend and he said that all the bolts associated with my rack and pinion had become loose. He tightened the bolts up, and the very next day they worked loose again. He did research on my vehicle and found that there are several complains about the rack and pinion and is shocked that Chrysler has not made a recall yet. I have not had any major accidents or problems, but as I read on the internet someone has died from the rack and pinion problems, and there has been several problems due to the rack and pinion not functioning properly. 2001 300m loss of power steering at idle. Extemely noisy pump. Have replaced pump 3 times. Dealer claims no reports of common problems. Have been told by several machanics may be rack and pinion.

Wife backed out of driveway, heard a popping sound, then attempted to pull back into the driveway. The car lost all steering. Discovered one bolt had sheared off the steering system, considered the rack and pinion, and the other bolt had backed out. The night before we had just traveled on interstate 20 in alabama, running interstate speeds with a child onboard. . If this had happened during the travel, no doubt fatalities would have resulted.

Rack and pinion total failure. No control over steering. Towed to garage and rack and pinion replaced.

1. There were no specific event that led up to this problem 2. When I first purchased the car, the dealership made a repair to my steering column 3. Yesterday, the rack and pinion ( I know it's misspelled) broke on the vehicle out of the blue and I had no steering capability. I had just dropped my 3 month old son off and if he would've been in the car, this could've caused a really serious problem. Maybe even deadly.

I have a 1999 Chrysler 300m. On July 23, 2005 I was informed by the local Chrysler dealership that the rack & pinion was badly rusted, and that one of the rods was completely broken! this car only had 62,000 at the time and was not used a a commuting car, and was treated very well. Simply put, this should not have happened, given the age of the car and it's use. In addition, the service manager that I dealt with said that they had seen several 300m's come in with the exact same problem. I do not live in a climate where we get snow, thus no salt on the roads, and I am not near the ocean. Based on this, as well as discussions with the dealership, it appears that this is a defect, one that cost me $2300, conveniently 1 month after my warranty expired. Also, according to the dealership, the rusting occurred over a long period of time and would have affected tire ware. This explains why I went through 4 tires in the past year. Luckily, this problem didn't cause me to get into an accident, but this potentially could end up being life threatening for someone else!.

I have since had the same, brand new bolt tightened twice to keep it from snapping again. Also, been through an additional set of tires. Chrysler needs to do something. I am not the only person with this problem that I know, and there are websites complaining about it all over the place.

Lose steering, bobbing steering with rumbling noise- diagnosis need new rack and pinion, having 3rd one put in now. Will lock up in a turn, will become very hard to turn left, sounds like out of steering fluid but not. I think possible part has changed or something not right with car or part. Something needs to be done about this. Car had 60,000 when it first began and very well maintained.

The repair was not covered under warranty: the 3 year/36,000 mile warranty had expired and the steering rack and pinion is not covered under the 7 year/70,000 mile power train warranty. We strongly believe this is a serious safety issue and consider ourselves lucky that we did not experience complete steering failure.

Chrysler will not stand behind the issue. It appears as if the worm gear in the system is breaking loose from the shaft.

Car now has 44,000 miles. The steering felt a little loose and front tire wear were my only clues and I attributed those to car possibly being out of alignment. Took car in for alignment and told cost to fix rack will be $1,100 or as much as $1,500 if tie rods need replaced. Not a please experience with my first chrylser product and on their "premium" car no less.

The steering wheel locked while driving on 6/29/2003. Driver was able to avoid a collision. Vehicle was taken to the dealer, who stated that problem was the rack and pinion. Dealer put in a new rack and pinion.

Power steering rack falure at only 70,000 miles. I feel that this is way to premature for this falure. My cost, almost $1,400. Chrysler did not offer to help at all.
