6 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 1999 Chrysler 300M

Failure Date: 12/16/2011

Alignment has been off for about 2 years. Took to my mechanic friend and he said that all the bolts associated with my rack and pinion had become loose. He tightened the bolts up, and the very next day they worked loose again. He did research on my vehicle and found that there are several complains about the rack and pinion and is shocked that Chrysler has not made a recall yet. I have not had any major accidents or problems, but as I read on the internet someone has died from the rack and pinion problems, and there has been several problems due to the rack and pinion not functioning properly. My mechanic friend is going to try to tighten the bolts again using lock tight(?) on the bolts and hopefully this will help the problem. . Read more...

Yesterday, the rack and pinion ( I know it's misspelled) broke on the vehicle out of the blue and I had no steering capability. Failure Date: 09/04/2006

While driving on suburban streets in light traffic, there was a sudden whirring noise under the hood followed by a loss of power steering. Under higher speeds or more traffic congestion, loss of power steering could easily have caused an accident. Power steering loss was caused by a sudden loss of power steering fluid that was leaking from the steering gear. I have not taken the vehicle in for repair yet. Due to fire hazard from leaking fluid and no power assist in the steering, vehicle will have to be towed.

Failure Date: 08/22/2005

Grinding noise - and play in the steering wheel - steering wheel sticking on turns I brought it in to the dealer and the cost was $934. 10 for the part and $412. 50 for labor plus the cost of another front wheel alignment of $60 - not under warranty and an email to customer service at Chrysler was not fruitful, they really don't care that the power steering rack went out at just over 40,000 miles.

19 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 1999 Chrysler 300M

Failure Date: 07/23/2005

I have a 1999 Chrysler 300m. On July 23, 2005 I was informed by the local Chrysler dealership that the rack & pinion was badly rusted, and that one of the rods was completely broken! this car only had 62,000 at the time and was not used a a commuting car, and was treated very well. Simply put, this should not have happened, given the age of the car and it's use. In addition, the service manager that I dealt with said that they had seen several 300m's come in with the exact same problem. I do not live in a climate where we get snow, thus no salt on the roads, and I am not near the ocean. Based on this, as well as discussions with the dealership, it appears that this is a defect, one that cost me $2300, conveniently 1 month after my warranty expired. Also, according to the dealership, the rusting occurred over a long period of time and would have affected tire ware. This explains why I went through 4 tires in the past year. Luckily, this problem didn't cause me to get into an accident, but this potentially could end up being life threatening for someone else!.

20 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2000 Chrysler 300M

Failure Date: 06/20/2005

The first thing I noticed was about 6 months after the purchase of my 2000 Chrysler 300 m in 2003 (less than 50,000 on the vehicle at the time) was a popping noise when making right turns. I took it back to the Dodge dealer where I purchased it from and was told it was nothing. Within 2 years, I went through two sets of 50,000 mile tires/ finally, the bolt in the rack assemble broke (in a parking lot thank god) a piece of the bolt was left in the assembly. This led to 1200 in repair work. A year later, there was so much play in the steering it was non drivable. I took it into the shop again and paid another 1100 to replace tire rods and other front end parts due again to "torque problems" with the steering. I have since had the same, brand new bolt tightened twice to keep it from snapping again. Also, been through an additional set of tires. Chrysler needs to do something. I am not the only person with this problem that I know, and there are websites complaining about it all over the place.

21 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2001 Chrysler 300M

Failure Date: 06/04/2005

Lose steering, bobbing steering with rumbling noise- diagnosis need new rack and pinion, having 3rd one put in now. Will lock up in a turn, will become very hard to turn left, sounds like out of steering fluid but not. I think possible part has changed or something not right with car or part. Something needs to be done about this. Car had 60,000 when it first began and very well maintained.

Failure Date: 08/07/2004

1999 Chrysler 300m with approximately 86,000 miles on it requires replacement of entire rack and pinion steering system and inner tie rods. I note on other internet sites that this might be a design defect for this car platform.

24 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2000 Chrysler 300M

Failure Date: 07/09/2004

Rack and pinion assembly failed with only 48,000 miles on vehicle. Steering was loose, clunking sound and sticking during turns. Manufacturer won't cover because car is out of warranty. Cost to me was $1200 for new rack and pinion. I don't feel this serious a problem should occur in a car with under 50,000 miles. If I hadn't had the problem checked out, it could have resulted in a seriour crash. Manufacturer doesn't care about its reputation or about safety for its customers.

25 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 1999 Chrysler 300M

Failure Date: 07/06/2004

While driving at any speed steering wheel felt loose, and made a loud noise. Vehicle was taken to the dealership, mechanic determined replaced the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. Consumer indicated that warranty expired, and the problem recurred.

26 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2000 Chrysler 300M

Failure Date: 06/26/2004

The steering on our 2000 Chrysler 300m became very loose. The steering worsened to the point that we felt uncomfortable driving the car. We took the car to a local dealer, lithia Dodge, to investigate. The problem was a failed steering rack and pinion. The car only has 46,000 miles. The repair was $850 for a refurbished rack and pinion replacement. The repair was not covered under warranty: the 3 year/36,000 mile warranty had expired and the steering rack and pinion is not covered under the 7 year/70,000 mile power train warranty. We strongly believe this is a serious safety issue and consider ourselves lucky that we did not experience complete steering failure.

27 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2001 Chrysler 300M

Failure Date: 05/22/2004

Rack and pinion steering on 2001 Chrysler 300m has suddenly work loose internally. Company will not explain why steering has become loose. There is 50,000 miles on vehicle. We do not know if vehicle steering system is breaking down and are replacing rack and pinion before accident could occur. There is now a quarter turn of slack in steering, creating a driving hazard. Chrysler will not stand behind the issue. It appears as if the worm gear in the system is breaking loose from the shaft.

28 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2000 Chrysler 300M

Failure Date: 01/20/2004

Vehicle lost power steering without warning while reversing out of a driveway. This was caused by rack and pinion failure. This was the second time this part failed and was replaced. The first failure occurred at 19,000 miles.

30 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2000 Chrysler 300M

Failure Date: 08/14/2003

My 2000 Chrysler 300m suddenly lost steering as I was driving. Luckily nothing happened. I was able to force the steering wheel to get it to a gas station. $850 later, its ok now but how can the rack and pinion go bad on a 45000 mile car? my mechanic said it was all apart beyond repair. I saw on the internet other people complained about steering on their Chryslers, so I figured id add to the pile.

32 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2001 Chrysler 300M

Failure Date: 07/31/2003

Per dealer "steering rack has internally failed and needs replaced". The car was bought used with 32,000 miles and condition existed then although I did not recognize it at the time. Car now has 44,000 miles. The steering felt a little loose and front tire wear were my only clues and I attributed those to car possibly being out of alignment. Took car in for alignment and told cost to fix rack will be $1,100 or as much as $1,500 if tie rods need replaced. Not a please experience with my first chrylser product and on their "premium" car no less.

35 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 1999 Chrysler 300M

Failure Date: 06/25/2003

Power steering rack falure at only 70,000 miles. I feel that this is way to premature for this falure. My cost, almost $1,400. Chrysler did not offer to help at all.
