While turning a corner my steering wheel turned one direction while my tires stayed straight. Also while driving down the highway at 45 miles an hour. My car went into the opposite lane almost head on into another vehicle when my wheels decided to turn back when I turned the steering wheel almost to the end of steering ratio. This car is going to end up killing someone. Then there will be a major law suit. I replaced the rack & pinion. Worked for about a month and now it is starting to do it again. Also replaced the tie rod ends. The bolts back out or become loose on the rack & pinion. Have had to tighten them on many occasions.

Coming home from work I pulled into my girfriends circle driveway. While making the left hand turn into the driveway I felt the car not reacting to the steering wheel. I stopped and looked at both front tires expecting to see a broken tie rod end but both tires pointed in the same direction. I asked her to step in the vehicle and turn the steering wheel while I could see what was happening. I could see the whole steering rack move back and fourth without it being connected to the frame. I am thankful that this did not happen at highway speeds when I was heading home. This is a very dangerous car to own.

Driving aprox 10 mhp into to school pick up and drop off area, to pick up children as school was letting out. I lost all steering functions, I had to have car towed back to my residence. My husband found that a bolt had broke off the tie rod ((right side) going into the rack and pinion and the (left side) bolt to the tie rod had back out of the rack and pinion. Their were no warning signs that something was wrong with the steering. I thank the good lord that it happened where and when it did, it could have been a different outcome a few miles down the road with myself and 3 children in the car going 45-50 mph on the 2 lane road going back to our home. Now as I drive our other vehicle around and see a Chrysler 300m I worry about the saftey of the occupants in that vehicle and the others around them.
The contact owns a 2004 Chrysler 300m. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds between 5-50 mph, the steering wheel would veer towards the left abnormally. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they advised the contact that the inner tie rods needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired for the inner tie rods. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 55,231.
The contact owns a 2000 Chrysler 300m. While the vehicle was parked the contact was unable to turn the steering wheel. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who stated the steering bolt fractured. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact had previously experienced a failure with the steering and the tie rod was replaced. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000.
The contact owns a 2001 Chrysler 300m. The contact stated that the tie rod on the rack and pinion was loose on the front passenger side of the vehicle. 2004 Chrysler 300m. Consumer writes in regards to numerous suspension problems and repairs. The check engine light illuminated, the struts, tie rods, radiator, fuel pump, sway bar bushings, cam shaft sensor were all replaced. The struts and tie rods were replaced several times.
Some background: I noticed the steering wheel was a little sloppy on my 300m and took it to a local dealer to be diagnosed. They told me the rack and pinion should probably be replaced. I had it replaced for around $1200. A year and a half later while traveling for christmas, I pulled off the interstate (from doing 70 mph) to stop at a gas station. I stopped at the top of the off ramp for the stop sign. Traffic cleared, as I accelerated to turn left, when I turned the wheel I heard a noise, and the car went straight. I had no steering. Luckily I had enough room past the intersection to get out of traffic, but still had my wife and two small children in a precarious position. If this had happened while doing 70 mph down the interstate, I'm sure we all would have been seriously injured or killed. The car was towed to a dealer whose opinion was that the bolts that hold the inner tie rods to the rack and pinion were loose and caused the failure. The dealer had to replace the rack and pinion again. Police were on scene but did not take a report.
I, like many other, have a dangerous problem with my 2002 Chrysler 300m steering. I am told the inner tie rod bushing is bad and after doing some internet research I guess I am not alone.
1. Started with clunks and awkward noises in the front of the car. Steering wheel began to have loose play. Front suspension was checked an never found a problem. 2. One night turned left and car wanted to turn right. While normal driving the car would pull left and right. Countless amount of events were I almost crashed. 3. Rack and pinion was replaced along with tie rods. Old parts are available if requested.

2001 Chrysler 300m with 68, 300 miles has steering vibration at 60 mph.
My sister's 2001 Chrysler 300 m experienced sudden steering failure while driving. Fortunately she was travelling at low speed, so no one was killed. She described the feeling at failure as a loud noise followed by the sensation of sliding on ice. It was towed to a repair shop, where they found that the threaded holes on the steering rack that the inner tie rods connect to were both stripped out and that the bolts had fallen out, resulting in complete loss of steering control. This seems to be a common problem with the large Chrysler vehicles, and puts a lot of people at risk of death. Please force Chrysler to recall these cars and to install a redesigned steering rack and tie rods that are not going to kill people.
Found play in rack-n-pinion needs replaced and aligned. Found to be unsafe and needs to be replaced as soon as possible.
The contact owns a 2004 Chrysler 300m. The contact stated that the vehicle began to violently shake without warning. The contact merged to the shoulder and noticed that the tie rods were corroded. The vehicle was taken to dealer where it was diagnosed that both the front and rear struts, inner tie rods, cam shaft and the oxygen sensor needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The approximate failure mileage was 37,682 and the current mileage was 115,546.
I have a 2000 300m. It has experienced sloppy steering, ?hitches? and a lack of smoothness, especially in left hand turns, and a tendency to not have the wheel come back to center without undue force being exerted. The front end also makes several different types of noises. The car is now in a asce shop with copies of information and TSB?s found on this site. I am hoping to have it properly repaired and to have my son use it for college (approximately 125 miles away). I am now concerned that, even repaired, the car will be unsafe. I believe I had an issue early on with it and the dealer replaced some tie rods or something. The car now has 160,000 miles on it and I have spent money on many items like brakes, tires, complete suspension replacement, several front end alignment issues, battery, air conditioning, etc. I thought it would be a good safe car for my son. Now I don?t know what to do. Two days ago a 19 year old family friend lost control of his 300m and hit a tree. He is dead.
My 2000 Chrysler 300m with aprox 83,000 miles, began to experience a loose feel to the steering, clunks upon turning, suspension rattle over bumps. Odd front tire tread wear pattern. Took to shop for alignment and inspection. Shop informed me that car was unalignable due to impending failure of inner tie rod bushing. Small tire and alignment shop was unwilling to do the repair to to complexity. To to my main mechanic who confirmed the problem, and altough he wouldn't have the part for a day cautioned aganst driving any further do to its near failure which if happened while driving could result in total steering failure. Repaired at a cost of $665. Mostly labor.
1) car made loud clunking noise when going over bumps and traveling at slower speeds. Had car looked at by 2 different mechanic shops and they couldn't figure out the problem. 2) finally took car in for a 3rd time and mechanic found the problem. 3)car needed new tie rods, sway bars, etc. For steering/suspension problems. Car only had about 50,000 miles on it. Repairs cost over $1000.
Violent shaking began while traveling at highway speed, approx. 70 mph. The shaking seemed to be originating from the right front end of the vehicle. Vehicle was brought in for service and mechanic informed me that the right side tie rod was defective. The mechanic showed me the "play" of approx. 3 to 4 inches to the left and then an additional 3 to 4 inches to the right of center. Apparently the shaking I felt was the right front wheel swinging left and right while I was traveling straight along the highway.
Cluncking noise coming from front end and steering locks up while turning full right or left. Car was serviced and rack and pinion was replaced under warranty at 50,000 miles. Returned to dealer after 100,000 miles for wheel vibration problems especially while braking. Inner tie rod bushings were replaced.
While driving approximately 45 mph consumer almost lost control of steering. Consumer took vehicle to dealer for service, and it was determined that tie rods failed.
2001 Chrysler 300m steering noise over bumps / play on steering wheel/ seems very unsafe to drive, dealership has replaced the tie rods as well as I did also I also replaced all suspension and the noise is still there it is definitely in the rack and pinion, it feels lose and like other complaints the rack and pinion may share off and cause a fatal car accident I need this fixed before it harms me or someone related to you. Please advise.
Inner tie rod bolt kept coming off. Consumer took the vehicle to an after market repair shop because the warranty on this vehicle was no longer in effect, and the Chrysler manufacturer refused to do anything to assist the consumer.
Unable to adjust vehicle toe. Dealer replaced steering wheel due to peeling and did a front end alignment and oil change. Vehicle came back with steering wheel cocked at a 45 degree angle when driving straight. Took vehicle back and it was returned to me with the wheel straight. I ran through two sets of tires when the tire dealer admitted the toe adjuster was frozen on one side and that he and possibly the mechanic before had set both wheels to a slightly toe'd out condition to allow the steering wheel to be straight. Otherwise the vehicle would have the steering wheel cocked at a slight angle. The vehicle is no longer under warranty. But the adjuster has been "stuck" of frozen since the first trip to the dealer.
On 9/16/2002 tie rods had to be replaced. Also, rack and pinion had to be replaced. Vehicle is currently at dealership.
