2 Battery Dead problem of the 2005 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 03/01/2011

We own a 2005 Pt Cruiser convertible and have had problems for the past year with the multifunction switch located on the steering column. The fog lights come on by themselves and will drain the battery dead. There must be a short in the steering column which is causing this problem. We turn our left blinker on before we shut off the ignition and this seems to keep the fog lights off. With this being a short, it could result in a fire which may cause an accident while driving - resulting in possible death. My expectations are high for the service that the NHTSA performs and I anticipate their action on this well known issue to be coming soon.

3 Battery Dead problem of the 2005 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 04/20/2010

I have a 2005 Chrysler Pt Cruiser. The fog lights come on unintentionally and drain the battery when the engine is turned off. I was left stranded in empty parking lots 3 times with my car battery dead. It seems the multi function switch is the culprit and this issue existed since 2001 models, Chrysler has done nothing to fix it for 10 years.

4 Battery Dead problem of the 2005 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 03/18/2010

2005 Pt Cruiser convertible fog lights came on while the vehicle was stopped and parked in parking lot. Came back 1 hour later and the battery was dead. Had no phone and had to walk 4 blocks in a dark vacant, "scary part of town" by myself. Called bcaa and they came out to give me a boost. The tech told me this is a rampant problem with these cars.

5 Battery Dead problem of the 2007 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 07/16/2009

The contact owns a 2007 Chrysler Pt Cruiser. While driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle shut off without warning. The vehicle was towed to a repair shop and the mechanic stated that the battery failed. The manufacturer failed to install a protective plate on the battery; therefore, fluid penetrated the computer wiring harness and caused the vehicle to shut off. The manufacturer will be notified. The current and failure mileages were 50,000.

6 Battery Dead problem of the 2002 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 05/25/2009

I purchased my 2002 Chrysler Pt Cruiser a few years ago now. I have sent Chrysler many letters about these problems. The most recent incident was very scary. I bought the car at about 31,000 miles. About a month later my paint started peeling off of the front bumper and my dash started to crack. Mind you I keep my car garaged and it is washed and waxed regularly by a shop that I have used for years with no problems. I went back to the dealer I bought it from and they were gone. So I contacted my next closest dealer. They said they could not do anything for me. About a month after that my cpu went out which was covered under the extended warranty that I purchased. They had to replace it twice before it finally lasted more than a day. Then my dash completely crumbled. It cracked from the windshield to the front in the center and on both sides. I wrote a letter and email with no answer. I then contacted Chrysler by phone and the lady told me to f%*k off and hung up on me. So I gave up. Obviously I was not going to get anywhere with them. Then about 3 months ago my check engine light came back on. I took my car to a friend who is a licensed mechanic and he scanned it on the computer and said it was my cpu again! I took it to the dealership and was told my warranty had expired. So I wrote another letter because this repair was going to be $1400. 00 dollars. No response. But the scariest was about 2 weeks ago I was driving with my 13 month old niece in the car and smoke started coming from the left hand side of my steering column. I almost had got in a wreck trying to get us to safety. The smoke stopped so I figured whatever it was done for now. We were on the side of the road in a not so desirable neighborhood at night so I decided to take my chances with the car. We headed off on our way and my headlights started flickering. I parked the vehicle at home and the next morning my fairly new battery was dead. My flood lights would not turn off and had been on all night.

7 Battery Dead problem of the 2005 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 11/08/2008

Left work to find the battery was dead. Got it jumped and went home. When I turned the car off and removed the key, I noticed that the fog light indicator light remained on. I checked the lights and found that they were still on. I turned the lights on, signaled left and right, jiggled it around and the indicator light finally went off. After a couple more occasions of battery dying (at this point the fog light randomly stayed on) eventually I figured out that if I left the light controlled in the left turn signal position when I turned off the car the fogs would turn off. This was the only way they would turn off. At some point we replaced the fuse, but the problem continued to occur off and on. Other electrical issues have occurred as well. The passenger side windows no longer go up or down. This is especially problematic because it is a convertible and the windows move up and down an inch or so whenever the door is opened and closed in order to seal shut. Rain comes into the gap between the window and roof because the window no longer seals shut. I haven't even tried to put the top down in a couple years for fear that I will not go back up, so I don't even know if that works. Living in the city of atlanta, I am required to get an emissions test done each year in order to renew my registration. Due to the battery dying, I failed the emissions test because the computer system did not have enough millage to show necessary data. I truly regret the purchase of this car!.

12 Battery Dead problem of the 2003 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 05/01/2006

This problem started in the spring of 2006. Although I didn't know it at the time, the fog lights came on by themselves while just sitting in the parking lot or at home. No warning, so I didn't know until I went to start the car and the battery was dead. Since this was intermittent, no lights on the dash advising me the fog lights were on and during daylight hours, I never noticed that the fog lights were on. After several times of this happening. This caused me to replace the battery. While replacing the battery I noticed that the original cables had inferior battery connector leads. The cables connectors were mostly eaten through causing me to have to replace them. (I noticed that when I got the new leads that the connectors were of a better material). Due to this not having any rime or reason as to why the battery kept going dead and no one had any idea why this was happening I simply had to wait until I discovered the cause. In Dec 2007 I went to start the car and sure enough the battery was dead. However this time when I jumped the battery the fog light on the dash stayed on and that is when I found the problem. I was unable to turn them off since the switch was already in the off position. My only recourse was to remove the fog light fuse. Since removing the fog light fuse I have had no further issues to date. I still do not know the cause or the cure so, I logged on to this site to look for a service bulletin or information to tell me that and here I am. The mileage on the vehicle when this whole stuff started was approx 36,000 and it now has 42000 miles on it.

He was informed by the dealer that there were no recalls and the vehicle was out of warranty. The current mileage was 109,000 and failure mileage was 79,000.

15 Battery Dead problem of the 2001 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 12/04/2004

Pt cruiser 2001 (car) will continue to run with key out of ignition. Safety issue: car cannot be stopped occurrences: has happened approximately 6+ times since problem initially brought to dealers attention in 2002 Chrysler support: essentially not responding with correct solutions over the last 24 months to local dealer who cannot resolve this defect dealer has attempted to repair this on 3 occasions with different solutions - however problem continues to occur dealer gave me specific instructions that if car did this again, I could stop it by removing fuse #11 - after a set of recent sequential failures on 12/4/04 where I used this technique until I could contact the dealer on Monday morning; vehicle battery died and needed to be re-started; responding mechanic advise me the procedure for removing fuse #11 was dangerous and could cause arcing in the car's electrical system and possibly a fire and complete destruction of the onboard computer. Most recent event occurred on 12/4/04 with key out of ignition, car still running. - utilized dealer technique of removing fuse #11, battery died.

16 Battery Dead problem of the 2001 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 08/22/2003

Bought an early 2001 Pt Cruiser. About one year after purchase, battery fails, car would not start, jump starting did not work. Towed it it dealer and they replaced battery and said it was faulty. About a year after this occured, it happened again, dealer still says it is the battery's fault. It happened again on August 22, 2001 and I put a spare battery in car and drove to dealership. Again they said that the battery was faulty. I believe there is an electrical problem with the car.
