1 Ignition Switch problem of the 2006 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 09/08/2017

We bought this vehicle in about October 2014 and we have had to have the ignition switch replaced within a week of buying the vehicle and the replacement ignition switch failed on or about September 8, 2017. My husband tried to start the car on that date and the ignition switch failed to make even a small noise let alone start the car. Possible lead in problems to the failure of the ignition switch were the brake lights burning out once a week and the alarm indicating that the keys were left in the ignition when the driver opened the door when the keys were in the driver's pocket or purse starting about 4 weeks before the ignition switch fully failed.

2 Ignition Switch problem of the 2009 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 07/22/2015

This occurs all the time wether I am driving on residental road or on a highway going 70 mph. My car feels like it is losing power which it is. All the lights on my dash are lit up like a christmas tree and I have to pull over to the side of the road very carefully as I lose steering as well. Sometimes I can just restart the car and everything is fine, sometimes it is a few minutes and a few times it has taken a few hours. I have taken the car in to get the codes read but they tell me it is either the gas cap is loose or another issue with the fuel. I took it to my mechanic and they put it on their computer and got different readings. I was told it was a fuel vacuum problem which was corrected. I still have the issues. Now sometimes the engine jerks and pulls but I don't loose power. Mechanic is unable to find problem. Did not take to dealership after reading all the horror stories about paying dealers tons of money and still not having a working car. Also if I have more then one key on my keyring then the ignition switch doesn't work. If I limit my keyring to just my car key and house key then my car starts everytime and no cutting out while at complete stop like it has in the past. We bought the car used in July 2011 and it now has aprox. 66,000 miles.

4 Ignition Switch problem of the 2006 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 04/27/2015

The instrument cluster lights go on and off. The fuel, mph, and rpm gauges go up and down. The car loses power and the accelerates by itself. I looked in you tube for information and found that I was not the only one with this problem! some people state that once they replace the ignition switch the problem goes away.

5 Ignition Switch problem of the 2006 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 03/23/2015

Just like many other complaints on here, my vehicle starts acting crazy with lights flashing, and feels like it won't shift and go above 40mph. I brought the car to dealer and they replaced the ignition switch, and pcm. This cost me $1200. It stopped for a bit, then started again a month or two later when they told me it needed motor mounts and a new pcm (which they said they changed, but I don't believe it). It is now back there with the same problem and I'm now on the 4th day it's there and I'm getting no answers, just a bunch of sales people calling. If there have been multiple issues with this same problem why hasn't this vehicle been recalled? the vehicle is in motion when this happens and I have children this can be very dangerous for us and others on the road.

6 Ignition Switch problem of the 2004 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 10/09/2014

Just under 78,000 miles turbo goes out, took to dealership, replaced turbo (took 6 mos) finally returned the vehicle and within 1 month head gasket goes out (blowing white smoke), while driving at 35 mph on a side road (dealer says known problem, wants another $2000 for head gasket, local dealer says "the head gaskets for that car are the weak point, when you return the comp ratio to new/normal with a new turbo. It will blow the head gasket out") replaced myself (cant afford dealer) new head gasket (multi layered pos), new bolts (required), new timing belt, now it wont start, tested all sensors, cam, crank, o/p, water, throttle pos, replaced coil, replaced pcm, chased and inspected all wiring, still nothing engine cranks over, but-it will not start. Mechanics and dealers alike say its normal for this car but they have no idea or reason for it not starting, I keep being told to check this sensor, replace that $300 part, look here, look there, replace that (another$300) again. Chrysler has a known problem with this piece of crap and has never done anything about it I have been fighting this for 4 years now Chrysler needs to repair this and reimburse for all the crap I've had to replace and all the b/s I've gone through. They knew the head gasket would blow out after a new turbo was installed, and did nothing about it, they have known about this no start/no crank issue these cars have, but have never done anything to address or fix the poor condition of their vehicles. Now there's a line that says its possibly the ignition switch that's causing the problem. Sounds to me like they sold the public a lemon and got away with it. Chrysler should be made to fix these pieces of garbage or buy them all back at what they sold for originally I will never buy another Chrysler as long as I live. Not worth even using as a boat anchor.

7 Ignition Switch problem of the 2006 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 07/24/2014

Driving on the interstate the panel lights started to come on. At 1st it was slowly until it filled the panel, later the whole group would pop on, and then go off. The 1st six or eight times they came on the only thing that was effected was the lights and gauges. As I continued to drive then the lights and gauges would act up, but the car would stall, or shut off and then pop back on. When examined by the Chrysler dealership on the diagnostic machine ($95. 00), they found ignition switch failure was occurring. I spoke to Chrysler group customer care and they said it was not their ignition switch at fault , but the posts were burnt due to age??? if the car was already running and I was not touching the key, why or how did these posts come into play??.

8 Ignition Switch problem of the 2008 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 06/08/2014

While driving all instrument gauges began flashing and going up and down. Could not accelerate. Was able to pull over and turn off ignition. Restarted and proceeded on my way with no further problems. 3 days later while driving 70 mph down a busy interstate it happened again. I jiggled the key in the ignition and everything went back to normal. I was able to replicate the issue by jiggling the ignition switch. This incident occurred on 4 separate occasions. Took vehicle to dealer and no codes were found. Had the ignition switch replaced and after 1 week have not had the problem again. The ignition switch has always been easy to move and now with a new switch it feels "normal". With the recent recalls of ignition switch issues perhaps this needs to be investigated on Chrysler models. This could cause serious injury and/or death if the engine stalls completely in traffic. Not to mention the fact of having no steering control if the engine does stall. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed.

10 Ignition Switch problem of the 2005 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 02/11/2014

I have a concern about all the issues with this car. On March 29th my fog lights would not turn off even when ignition switch was turned off. I went on line and saw several "blogs" about this issue - I am an older women with minimal knowledge of these things so I went to a parts store that was open and the clerk pulled the #8 fuse out - for the fog lights so my battery would not run down before service/repair was open on Monday- the mechanic stated he could fix it and also that the dealership just took in a used cruiser and the fog lights did not work - they found that someone had took the fuses out for that cruiser also - is this a defective issue- appears now according to the internet the replacement part has been improved. I also had to replace the entire computer and again seems other cruiser owners have had this issue also - this is a lot of expense and with the loan on the car is difficult to now get a different car as this does seem to be a lemon - but I have to keep it till I can afford to get a different car - with all these issues - no one will want this one either.

11 Ignition Switch problem of the 2006 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 09/19/2013

Very much the same as the other complaints listed on here. I kept having problems with the car shutting down and / or the steering locking on me. Started in September and had to "continually" go back to the dealer over & over & over again just to have them say they've check the diagnostics and nothing is showing up. Then next time they said it was probably needing a new computer switch. . . . So more $$$. This was never resolved until after "multiple" incidents & "multiple" visits to the dealer. Then one day in late October. . . Now 2 months of frustration. . . . I'm in the parking lot of a mall & the car slows down & the gauges start going crazy. It shows zero 0 speed & zero 0 in my fuel tank. . . . . I had just filled the gas tank 2 hours earlier. . . . . And then it just stops. Then starts up again but with a weird sound. So once again I drove "directly to the dealer" while terrified that it may just stop dead while driving & be rear-ended. And after the dealer hooked it up once "again" they said it had to do with the ignition switch. Saying it was throwing off all the computer mechanisms and that's why it would just stop dead while driving. And this was $1,400 later. . . . . Yes, $1,400 for them to finally "figure this out when all they had to do was look on here". . . . To see the "strong possibility" of what was wrong. And yes, I sincerely think Chrysler corp should reimburse all of us as this is an obvious mechanical / electrical design error on their part. I've had a pt cruise in the past. But, believe me I will not be buying another car from your company when this should have definitely been a recall. Especially & vastly for safety reasons!!! and as for Chrysler, you should be ashamed of yourselves. . . . Playing dangerous games with peoples lives!!! and so should your dealerships. . . . At least the dealer I paid $1400 !!!.

12 Ignition Switch problem of the 2009 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 07/24/2013

While driving the car will just stop, the gauges will flicker on and off and the gas gauge will drop to empty. After it shuts off, it will start back up as if nothing happened. You might be okay for a few days or months before it happens again. We have had the car back in with the dealer at least 5 times and they can't seem to duplicate the issue. Even after keeping the car for over a month or more. We then caught the gauges going crazy and recorded it for the dealer. They couldn't find a code for the issue. We had the battery replaced and it didn't fix the issue. Now they think it might be the ignition switch. We are having that replaced now. This same issue is affecting many 2009 Pt Cruiser owners and chrsyler has not stepped up to address the problem. It is extremely dangerous to be driving a car that just comes to a complete stop whether you are on the highway or a residential street. My hope is that there is not a loss of life or limb before something is done.

13 Ignition Switch problem of the 2006 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

While driving gauges randomly go to zero, all warning lights come on, sometimes engine stalls for one second and then restarts, then gauges go back to normal. Happened once in a while a year ago, now happens daily. Took to dealer last year and they could not replicate problem. Have seen this issue on various internet sites including this one but with no solutions. Lots of suggestions - fuses, battery wires, battery, ignition switch - but nothing definitive. Car is very dangerous, I'm just lucky it hasn't stalled at the wrong time. Friend with a Dodge has same problem and his dealer can't fix either.

14 Ignition Switch problem of the 2006 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 06/07/2010

I have 2006 Pt Cruiser and I am having tons of electrical problems sometimes the stereo will not work. Brake light stays on and run the battery down. If you have the dome light one and put your blinker on to the right the light goes out doesn't do it on the left, the ignition switch sometimes hangs up and will not turn stuck for a little before I can get it to turn over and start, then the ac spouse had to rewire it because the compressor wasn't kicking on and off, I have always owned a Chrysler and after this experience if Chrysler is not will to help repair the vehicle I would not own another, my husband is out of work and I cant afford to repair all the issues this car has. . . . . This could be a fire hazard waiting to happen.

15 Ignition Switch problem of the 2002 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 03/03/2010

The ignition key does not stay in when the engine is running. The mechanic who worked on the car in October said he has replaced several ignition switches in this model car. Could it have been manufactured by the same company as those involved in the gm recall? this problem has existed for several years.

16 Ignition Switch problem of the 2007 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 08/17/2009

We have a 2007 in November 2007 the ignition switch fuse started to plow out once every 3 months. It got worse in august16, 2009 it would not stop blowing so we took it to larry miller Dodge to have it check and they said it was the ignition switch and it melted some wire under the dashboard. Had it all replaced and drove around for a few days started doing it again. I took it back and they hooked it up to there machine and didn't find anything wrong so I left it they told me that it needed to do it in front of them and it did started blowing the ignition fuse right there I left the car with them and the next day they told me it stopped doing it a day later it did it again so I called the main office of larry miller and they told me they would look into it to stay by the phone and they would call me on what to do I did. 2 months later went by and I called them and they said that the guy that was helping me got fired and that they closed the case I have been calling them about every day about this and they said it is my problem not theirs. And now the cooling fan is not working there is something wrong with the electrical system with this car. I am afraid to drive it because I have a little boy with me and am worried something is going to catch fire.

18 Ignition Switch problem of the 2006 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 01/01/2008

If you investigate my VIN, you will see that from soon after I bought my car, I had a weird problem where the gauges would go crazy, the dash lights all light up, and sometimes experience full engine shut down, if not just have an accelerator fail while driving. For years, I kept trying to work with Chrysler to allow them to diagnose and fix the issue and they were never able to do so even though I had photos of what was happening. In approximately July 2011, I met someone with a convertible Pt Cruiser like mine and she asked if I had any issues with my car. I described my problem and she said hers had the same problem. She said that a new ignition switch fixed the problem but Chrysler refused to help. I was thrilled and called chryser to report that I had finally figured out the problem. I begged and pled with them to fix it but the best that they could promise was that if the problem turned out to be the ignition switch that I would be reimbursed for the cost of assessing the problem ($200+ for assessment), but not for my time nor would they be able to provide a rental while it was being assessed or fixed. Given that I could not miss work and had little faith that they would admit the problem was theirs, I was forced to allow the problem to continue to exist. When the gm ignition switch problems came out, I called again and eventually someone contacted me to help after several more pleading calls for help failed and I escalated the issue. My ignition switch was replaced and the problem never happened again. I say all of that to say this: please look into convertible Pt Cruiser ignition switches. They are a known issue that was never recalled and a good number of owners replaced on their own. While I appreciate the eventual fix, when informed of the problem for years, Chrysler did not address this clear danger and I endured a great deal of stress in the interim.

19 Ignition Switch problem of the 2001 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

You can remove the key from the ignition switch in any of the positions. Also, you can move the gear shift and the car will move. There is no incident date. It's been that way since I bought it new.
