I own a 2006 Pt Cruiser. In 2006, Chrysler replaced the traditional fuse box with a unit called a totally integrated power module (tipm). The unit controls power to most areas of the car including brake lights, running lights, dashlights and headlights. As I was driving, the driver side rear running light burned out. At least that is my guess. The light bulb was the only shorted item could find. This caused the dashlights to go out and the primary brake lights to go out. The bulb shorted on the inside. The totally integrated power module (tipm) is designed with no fuse protection between the lighting module and the lights. This shorted bulb shorted out the unit and made the vehicle very unsafe to drive. I researched on the problem on the internet. I found many instances of the (tipm) failing. I found this in the chat rooms, blogs and threads I visited while looking for answers. I noticed that these units are installed in many of Chrysler's cars and based upon what I learned have been problematic. In all the instance of failure, the car is driving and there is no notification to the driver that the unit has failed other then the lights go out. The units are built as a single unit and the wiring harness is part of the unit. You cannot repair the unit. I have been verbally quoted to replace this unit the cost will be around $975. It seems to me that having a $2. 50 bulb trash a major safety component of a car is a bad thing. Will you look into this problem and see it is fit for a recall?
I am at work and do not have my cruiser with me today. If you need the VIN number, please let me know and I will send it you.

August 2005 my self and my family were taking a short trip out of town about 200 miles. At the half way point we pulled in to a gas station for some refreshments I waited in the car when I noticed smoke coming from my steering column up through the flasher button. We realized it was the wiring from my fog lamps only because that was the only thing that no longer work. The lamps were not in use at the time. Not really sure why the wiring caught fire.

1) our fog lights had been going on and off intermittently for a couple of weeks. 2) my wife was driving down a local street coming home when smoke started billowing out from under the steering column, filling the car with smoke. She happened to be at the local dealership (it's on the way home from her work) and pulled in their parking lot. The car was left at the dealership. The problem was diagnosed as being a shorted fog light switch. Instead of a fuse blowing the wire harness acted as a fusible link and began melting down. We are now responsible for the replacement of a $2500. 00 wire harness. I asked the service writer why a fuse had not blown and he told me that the circuit is protected by a forty (40) amp fuse. Being an electrician I know that a forty amp fuse or breaker protects an electric range oven and is on 8 awg wire. To repair the fault, we have to buy the harness which Chrysler will cut off the connector that melted down and will splice on the new one. All of the controls on the steering column pass through this harness which melted down and the wires are obviously not protected by fuses. If they were a fuse should blow with a short. Our vehicle has had 4 warranties and 3 recalls since we have owned it. The car is still not fixed after a week and a half.
I was driving and the car caught on fire - electrical with flames inside the car. To the best of my knowledge the engine and body of the car were not damaged. The car is currently sitting on the dealer lot. It was reported to Chrysler and the car is under warranty; however, they are denying my claim. I wasn't hurt - just inhaled a lot of black smoke getting the car off the highway and into a parking lot. The windshield shattered from the heat as well as the entire dash to the left of the steering wheel is gone - and the plastic is melted and just hanging. Chrysler is refusing to do anything about my Pt Cruiser even though it is under warranty. The 911 operator transferred me to the fire department - who have a report on the car.

Today, 8/5/05 I will mail my letter detailing the entire problem but I am submitting this portion online to get the process started. Thank you for your time and attention. Sincerely, eric calderaro. The vehicle was in motion when a pop noise was heard caused by a spark within the dash above the speedometer. White smoke had come billowing out of the instrument cluster. The overhead lights in the headliner did not work properly. The circuit board was burned. Other problems: transmission fluid leaked and squeaks were coming from the rear suspension. The sway bushings had worn out and were replaced.
Lose all instrument panel function, dome light stays on, and door ajar light stays on. . . . Even tho no door is open. . . Dealer has no clue and computer does not report an issue. . . . Pull fuse and reinsert resolves the issue. . . .
Your campaign number NHTSA 01v288000. On October 31st the cluster panel in my 2002 Pt Cruiser failed - air bag, brake and engine light lit up on panel and won't go off. Called Chrysler, they deny there is a recall. Car is in shop and they want to charge me $692. 00 to fix.

Just paid for an issue with a vehicle that was addressed by NHTSA recall # 01v288000, back in 9/01. (the vehicle was returned to the selling dealer at that time, for the recall. Now, the exact problem explained in the recall happened to the car, and the dealer charged for the repair, claiming a hard wiring issue that he refused to show me.
From the first month that I purchased my vehicle the engine light has been on more than off. I read the owners manual and it said that it was a vacuum issue and it would correct itself. The dealership charged me to diagnose and to fix it but now I see that there was a NHTSA 01v288000 on a cluster panel issue. Why was I charged for something that a dealership should check for to see if it is a known defect?.
Nhtsa recll#01v28800/ manufacturer's recall 994. Got recall, and took vehicle into dealer be repaired. Dealer indicated recall could not be done because program has not been installed on computer.
