The contact owns a 2003 Chrysler Pt Cruiser. The contact was driving approximately 45 mph when the engine exhibited hesitation with a slight loss of power. The failure was sporadic. On a separate occasion, the engine completely stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer six times for diagnosis pertaining to the failure. The technician was unable to duplicate the failure. A mobile computer was installed in the vehicle to possibly detect future failure occurrences. When the engine failure recurred, the mobile computer was unable to project an accurate reading. The technician recommended the oxygen senor be replaced however he could not guarantee that the repair would correct the problem. The contact planned to take the vehicle back to the dealer to have the oxygen sensor replaced. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000. Updated 01/14/11
the consumer stated both oxygen sensors were replaced and the vehicle is operating as designed. Updated 02/23/11.

Total engine failure - 2006 Chrysler Pt Cruiser convertible. I was driving to work and the oil light came on. The oil light immediately went off but then came back on again over and over and over. I was within 300 miles of needing my second oil change. I drove it to the dealership thinking it may be a computer glitch. When I got to the dealership there was no oil in the engine. When you see three mechanics looking under the hood and holding their hands up with looks of dismay on their faces. . . . . . That is not a good thing. After diagnostic tests, the dealership found that there was 1/8th of an inch of "end play" in the engine and the rear main seal blew. The car had to have a total engine replacement because more than 70% of the engine was ruined. The car was covered with oil top to bottom on the outside (paint and convertible top) for weeks while this engine was replaced. After the engine was replaced the car seemed to have more problems and the dealership picked it up on rollback and after analysis said nothing was wrong with the car.
: the contact stated the engine failed while traveling at 25 mph. The dealership determined that the engine block was cracked and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was maintained regularly.

2001 Pt Cruiser had been at dealership for repair because fog lights would not turn off, thus killing the battery. Service dept. Reported that car "overheated" during repair and they replaced fan. Three weeks later, car engine oil light sounded suddenly on freeway with no prior warning and then the engine failed. Dealership refusing repairs under extended warranty due to alleged "sludge" in the engine they say was caused by poor maintenance when I know this to be untrue.
Shortly after the odometer reached 500 miles, the engine began idling roughly and missing. Concern about engine failure causing accident. Returned to 2 separate dealers. Both stated the computer showed no problem, but service reps admitted having other complaints. Both noted Chrysler refused to acknowledge any problem.
