The electronic door locks on my 2002 Pt Cruiser limited started operating by themselves two years ago. I have had this car since it was new and had the multifunction turn signal switch replaced about 3 years ago. The door lock problem sometimes occurs when you are driving the car at low speed but it will also occur when the car is setting in the garage with the key out of the ignition. The doors will lock and unlock several times on their own while driving or without anyone being in the car or touching the remote keyless entry system. This can present problems if the car is locked and in a public parking lot. The care sometimes will unlock on its own. You can also be locked out of the car if you don't take your keys with you when exiting the car. This seems to happen more during hot summer weather than during cooler winter months. I have also noted that the external temperature gauge and compass mounted above the front window will also go out during hot weather. When the car cools down with the air conditioner on, the external temperature gauge will start operating again. I have taken the car to the dealer three times to be fixed. The first time they charged to diagnose the problem and said nothing was wrong, the second time they said the battery cable was corroded and need replaced at $300 and it needed a new battery. After this work, I drove it around the block and the door locks started going wild again. So I went back to the service manager and he said they would have to have the car for several days and they would get the district service manager on the phone to see if he might be able to help them. At that point we went into winter and it was ok. It is doing it again this spring so I will try again.

Web site topix will confirm the incredible # of folks that have had fog lamps turn on after car is shut down causing battery drain. 100's have paid for replacement part multi-function switch. This controls fog, head, accessory, & dash lighting. To prevent the fog lamps from coming on by themselves, most have removed fuse # 8 to remove the fog lamps from the circuit. People report smoke coming from turn signal lever, & the complete loss of all lighting is quite common. I personally have replaced the multi-function switch 3 times on my wife's 2001 p. T. Cruiser with only 50,000 total miles & she being original owner. By parking her car minus fuse # 8, not using dome lighting, & always parking with the signal lever in the down or left turn position has prevented the mystery fog lamp issue, & kept her battery functioning. This "temp" solution has allowed her about 6 or 8 months of driving w/o the problems other pt owners struggle with. Sooner or later someone will lose lighting or a fire will occur inside the steering wheel which will cause serious injury, loss of vehicle & possibly death. Chrysler denies any knowledge, but wants more than $1,000. 000 to analyze & repair. Through the topix p. T forum I was able to learn how to do the work myself for far less than $100. Many are getting ripped off for hundreds while Chrysler knows full well of the issue. No less than an investigation, perhaps started with the topix forum will demonstrate the incredible number of failures that still plague the p. T. On later models such as 2001 thru 06 or 08. Also need 3rd. Brake job, & the rims do not seal causing low tires that hurt mpg. Driving comfort, & safety. Dealer & I have tried michelin tires hoping the problem was with the factory installed goodyears. I still hear every 100 miles or so that my wife's p. T needs additional air pressure. ## VIN passed ## 2001 Chrysler p. T cruiser ##.

Multi-function switch connector housing degrades due to heat exposure over time which can cause shorting, light or turn signal failure or a smoke/fire hazard. The first indication of a problem was that the fog lamps would turn on by themselves. Other owners have reported the main lights turning on and a few instances of the steering column billowing smoke while driving. Chrysler has 2000+ multi-function switches on back order and refuses to acknowledge the issue after many owners have called to complain about the problem.
The multifunction turn signal switch allows stops working and fog lights stay on making the battery run down and the only immediate remedy is to disconnect the fog lights, I pulled the fuse. There is an excessive amount of complaints about this issue on the internet. Chrysler should man up to this problem. Someone could get seriously hurt if there is a fire because of this problem. Death or extreme burns could come as a result of Chrysler not taking care of this problem. Why does it have to go to such extreme measures for Chrysler to take care of this electrical hazard. There are so many instances of this problem out on the web, so I know Chrysler can't say that they've never heard about it before. I will sue if me or any of my family are harmed by this electrical short. This is just a bad accident waiting to happen.
Pt cruiser 2003 fog lights came on without warning, battery ran dead, cost over $200 to replaces the turn signal stalk. Chrysler mechanics were aware of this issue and clearly were enjoying the profits. They refused to cover the repair or participate in any way. I submitted a request for consideration to Chrysler, which they rejected because the car has 70,000 miles on it. Reference number: 16043282, email case number: 1688956. Obviously, the number of miles on the car have nothing to do with the turn signal
stalk wearing out! this was obviously a poorly-designed part, judging by the number of other owners who have complained about the same problem. While I appreciated that my warranty was up, problems of this nature should receive active consideration for compensation. This was not going to make or break Chrysler, although it has a significant impact on me. I would think you
would be interested in having me tell people how impressed I am with your support for such a situation, rather than tell them they should avoid Chrysler products because they could easily find themselves in my situation. I plan to make good on my statement to pursue other avenues of satisfaction. Was there anything you could do to help?.

Multipurpose switch turn signal, fog lamp, dimmer. Malfunctioned and leaves fog lamps on intermittently, whether vehicle is occupied or not. Drained battery multiple times and required removal of fog lamp fuse. My positive battery cable melted and lost electrical function of entire car.
