19 problems related to engine and engine cooling have been reported for the 2001 Chrysler Sebring. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My husband and I were going to a friend's house. On the way the all of a sudden the engine started knocking loudly. He pulled over to check all of the fluids and everything seemed to be fine. When I got home I researched the issues and about 99% of 2001 Sebring convertible owners experienced the same engine problems and it stated that it was due to oil sludge. I called Chrysler and informed them of the issue and was told to take the car the a dealership near me. I was able to enjoy my car for about 2 days. They will continue hearing from me for a long time because I am a person that never gives up. I will pester them everyday until my demands are met with fixing or replacing my engine. It is not anyone's fault that they made a crappy engine for this model. Let the games begin.
This is another example of the oil sludge issue with the Chrysler 2. 7 l engine. I bought the car used with low miles, and had my tension arm go out a few months later due to sludge buildup. This second instance came up pretty quickly. The started knocking on hard acceleration, then 2 days later started missing badly going uphill on my way home form work. The engine dies on the downhill side of the most dangerous road in portland (germantown rd. ). This is a very steep extremely curvy road and I came all too close to not being able to make the first turn with no power steering or brakes. Making my way down the remainder of the hill was a bit frightening, to say the least. After getting towed and finding out the damage was blown bearings and replace the engine, it was suggested I look online for Chrysler 2. 7 l engine to find that this should have been considered a defect and the engine should have been replaced or repaired by Chrysler, but Chrysler claims the engine is fine, it's the owner's fault.
On Friday June 11, 2010, I was involved in an automobile accident. My car, a Chrysler 2001 Sebring lxi failed to stop when the brakes were applied. I steered the car away from rear-ending the vehicle in front of me avoiding a crash. However, I steered my car between two lanes of stationary traffic. While going into traffic exiting off highway 270. I tried to apply the brakes but the car wouldn't stop. The engine revved up and the car wouldn't stop. My car made contact with a Mini van. My passenger side view mirror struck the Mini van causing damage to both the Mini van and my car. I contacted my insurance company immediately. The driver of the Mini van and I exchanged information and I called a tow truck to tow my car to my home. The following Wednesday June 16, 2010. . Farmers insurance adjuster paul gallagher contacted me. I received a rent-a-car from enterprise leasing. Today, June 16, I contacted the Chrysler coporation to voice my complaint and I was told that a contact investigator would contact me within 3 days. I told them I need authorization for a rent-a-car while they investigate the crash. I asked that a supervisor contact me to advise about the rent-a-car. Shortly after, I was contacted by the supervisor and he told me to get my car fixed and I would not receive any assistance from Chrysler. I went online and contacted your agency and found that Chrysler knew that my 2001 Chrysler Sebring lxi, was on the recall list since November 2000. I would like your assistance with this matter because my granddaughter, the driver of the Mini van, and myself could have been seriously hurt. I need cooperation from Chrysler corporation. I will contact my adjuster to inform him of the recall notice that I discovered on your website. I'm afraid to drive that car and my car only has 68,000 miles and is in mint condition. I have records of every oil change and other repairs that have been made. I need help.
2001 Chrysler Sebring turns off while driving - the exact same problem as the hundreds of thousands of Chryslers recalled last year. Everyone wants to try a body control module, fuel pump, new crank shaft but the problem keeps occurring - perhaps because they were not aware of this recall/problem as not even my local Chrysler dealership knew. This has happened to me frequently over the past 1. 5-2 years or so, it comes and goes. I was rear ended once but it was light enough (thank god) that it did not cause any damage. Extremely dangerous. Almost a quarter of a million Chrysler vehicles were recalled last year for this problem. As of right now, I believe just van/crossover models - why not all models with this same problem? please leave your complaints on the message boards alone and bring them to NHTSA so that Chrysler can be held accountable for these issues.
I own Chrysler Sebring convertible, 2001. The engine got broken on the highway as a result of oil sludge.
I have a 2001 chry Sebring convt limited with a 2. 7 engine. It was purchased from a dealer with 38,000 miles and now has 72,000 miles and I had no ideal that when getting in my car to go to work one morning that it would not start. The motor would only lightly turn but not fully turn over. I made sure of the regular oil changes as with any other car I've had in the past. The motor is sludge like I've never changed the oil since I've had it. I paid 11,000 cash and very disappointed ! I too am disappointed and upset that Chrysler isn't standing up to this problem. It's a very pretty car but that doesn't get me to work being pretty. So I'm going to try to repair it. For around 3,000. I believe if we stand together those who believe will pray jesus will change Chrysler to do a recall. We'll all feel better. Oh, this was my third Chrysler vehicle a 1997town & country and a 1999 Sebring convt. I'm at this point afraid to get any other. Even to repair it may lock up it seems in two years reading others complaints. I really hate that I've lost alot of hard working cash only to put out more. I don't want another use motor due to my findings with the 2. 7. I couldn't even do the clunker deal. I'm glad no one at this time has gotten killed or hurt.
My son bought his fist car, a used 2001 Chrysler Sebring with the 2. 7 engine. Day two of driving the car he blew the motor. Dealer says he can't find a replacement motor so I talked to my mechanic about it and he said the 2. 7 Chrysler motor has a problem with oil sludge that causes the motor to fail. It is a very common problem. Now my son is making car payments on a car that isn't fixable.
My 2001 Chrysler Sebring just stopped running while I was driving down the highway motor had seized up and was junk.
My 2001 Sebring engine locked up in the middle of a busy intersection due to catastrophic failure of the piston rods, bearing and crankshaft on the 2. 7l engine. This failure has been widely reported and I was lucky enough to have just cleared the ft. Mchenry tunnel on i95 in baltimore maryland. The center for auto safety has recorded many of these types of issues with the Sebring. It will cost $6,000 to repair and someone is going to get hurt.
: the contact stated while traveling 50 mph, the vehicle's engine blew up on the highway. The contact suffered minor injuries. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic shop who determined that the cause of the engine blow out was due to oil sludge build up and the engine would need to be replaced. The dealer was notified.
2001 Chrysler Sebring 2. 7l motor. 69000 miles. Motor quit. Diagnosed as broken timing chain, new motor needed $6,900. Failure occurred while driving, motor just stopped. I was fortunate to get to the side of the road without an accident.
The engine blew up while driving. This almost caused an accident. This engine had very low mileage at 42,800. From all information I can gather this is a problem with the company and they are not doing anything to fix this, over 700 complaints.
Engine started knocking, and the vehicle turned off and would not start. Consumer stated that the vehicle was still not running, and had not been towed.
Two weeks after a regular oil change, the 2. 7l engine on my '01 Sebring made a large clunk. The dealership mechanic said it had blown a rod (ruined). Cause of the failure according to dealership was "oil sludge. " not covered in warranty. Price quoted for replacement was $7-8000. Mileage at the time was 47443.
Engine on my 2001 Sebring sedan is idling roughly from loss of compression in one or two cylinders. Car had just over 60,000 mile when it started and dealer took car for two days, charged me hundreds of dollars to clean injectors and replace the injector in the low compression cylinder, and couldn't fix the problem. Then stated it's probably the engine but I just went over the 60,000 coverage and a repair wouldn't be covered. I maintained the vehicle and have records for all work done on it since I bought it new. Chrysler should make good to repair or replace the problem whatever it is since I'm now becoming aware of many other sludge problems in the same 2. 7 6 cyl engine which apparently has defects in its manufacturing.
Heard knocking coming from the engine at around 59,000 miles. Said to be the result of oil sludge. Was told that I need a new engine at a cost of $6000. 00. Haven't replaced engine. Still have to make the car payments on a car that does not work.
While driving the engine seized up. There was no warning. The blocked had to be replaced. Please provide any further information.
My 2001 Chrysler Sebring convertible with a 2. 7 liter engine just quite on the highway with no prior warning or warning lights coming on one day last July. The dealer claims the engine seized due to sludge build-up. Since the car was 3, 600 miles over the 36,000 mile warranty, Chrysler has refused to repair the engine or even acknowledge that there is a problem with the 2. 7 liter engine over-heating and causing sludge build-up.
When driving at 60 to 70 mph, consumer states the engine will suddenly shut off. Consumer has no brakes and steering is very hard. Consumer is not able to restart vehicle. Please provide any further information. Ts.
