The motor surges when in park & while idling at a stop sign. It has happened many times, and I have almost slammed into a pedestrian because it catches me by surprise. I removed the floor mat to ensure that is not the problem (it has happened 3 times since), and the last time it happened (last week) the car was in park, and the engine roared as if I was flooring the accelerator, on it's own.

The engine on my 2004 Sebring convertible gts blew while driving down I 95 toward miami going 75 mph. I lost all control and power to vehicle. Luckily I was able to coast off exit 129 in ft pierce to a gas station. Only to have car towed to firestone where they informed me that my engine had blown and that it was a very known and common problem in this engine.
The contact owns a 2007 Chrysler Sebring. The contact was driving 60 mph when the vehicle began to lose power. The electronic throttle control warning light was illuminated as the vehicle decelerated to 20 mph. The vehicle was parked overnight and the following morning, the vehicle operated as normal. On a later date, the exact same failure occurred and the vehicle began to drive extremely rough. After allowing the vehicle to sit idle overnight, the vehicle operated as normal. The contact stated that the failure would occur intermittently. The vehicle was not taken for diagnosis or repairs. The manufacturer was not contacted. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 28,000 and the current mileage was 49,750.

The engine (a 2. 7l v6) "blew" or "locked up" with, what we learned later, was an oil sludge accumulation problem. No oil pressure warning light ever came on until it was too late. The engine can not be repaired, only replaced. The dealer we bought the car from, purchased the car (a rental from florida) at auction. So we bought it from him with 18,000 mi already on it. Chrysler would not honor the extended new car warranty (8/80000) we purchased (at $1000 extra) because we could not prove, with receipts, that the engine was properly maintained. So far nothing has been done to fix the car because we can't afford to replace the engine at this time. We have also since learned that Chrysler is currently involved in class action lawsuits regarding the 2. 7l v6 engine in 4 states: California, florida, illinois, and new jersey, although it may have been consolidated by now (9/30/2010). Need some help. Thanks.

Thermostat fail 2004 Chrysler Sebring.
I have two complaints. I was driving on a highway proceeding at approximately 55 miph and the car turned off. No warning, just dead. Second complaint: I filled up with gas. I proceeded to leave the station which involved exiting and turning onto a main highway. I tried to stop at the top of the exit driveway and I had no power brakes. I pushed hard on the brake pedal and the car stopped.
I recently purchased a 2001 Chrysler Sebring convertible with a 2. 7liter engine three months ago from a private owner. Car seemed in good condition, oil changes runs good. . . On 8/18/09 my husband and I were driving and out of nowhere the engine seized. We paid $100 for a tow to pep boys. At pep boys we paid $100 plus to have them tell us there is nothing else we can do we need a new engine. We haven't replaced it yet as this just happened two days ago but we estimate $2000 to replace the engine. I only purchased the vehicle for $4800.
The contact owns a 2002 Chrysler Sebring convertible. While driving 50 mph, the vehicle suddenly shut off. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the engine needed to be replaced. The current and failure mileages were 67,000.

2001 Chrysler Sebring. I had an engine blow at 71,850 miles. Changed oil every 3,00 miles and have service records to prove it.
Chrysler 2. 7 liter engine complaint. 2001 Sebring lxi. 77,000 miles. Didn't pass inspection. Emissions and visible smoke coming from the tailpipe. Just had the car checked and was advised that the engine needs a lot of work. Advised that the 2. 7 engine has had many problems. Many people have filed complaints. I am adding my name to the list of people that are complaining. Bottom line is I was told that I could fix all that is wrong and engine will still fail. I was told that the engine needs to be replaced. I should not have a smoking engine at 77,000 miles.
2001 Sebring convertible needs to have engine replaced. Was driving down the road and a sound like a soda can inside the engine started. Mechanic says rod baron gone bad. Searched and said this 2. 7l engine is garbage and says that it will happen again with a replacement engine. The engine is garbage. Car has sat in my garage while I decide what to do. . . 4k to repair and being told it will happen again. . . ¿!@#$% Chrysler how do you stay in business!!!.
Within 5 minutes of turning off and locking car, engine compartment was engulfed in flames. 2008 Sebring limited cconvertible with 11,800 miles. Dealer service-lube/oil/filter- 7/25/08.
2. 7 liter engines my mechanic said they are bad designs he has had alot ofcome in his shop with rods knocking.
Vehicle has died for no reason on several occasions, and then recently started knocking. I had it towed to the dealer and was told that the engine was ruined with sludge. It is still under warranty. We have done a few of the oil changes ourselves, and had some done at auto services other than Chrysler so they do not wish to warranty the engine. This is an ongoing problem I discovered after searching the internet and Chrysler is trying not to honor the warranty by claiming the oil was not changed correctly by the owner, and or, the service companies other than Chrysler. I cannot afford to continue paying for a car that does not run, and I cannot afford a new engine for a car that is a 2004 model, or any year model for that matter. A $20,000 vehicle should last more than 4 or 5 years. 20,000.
Motor failed at 75,600 miles when the oil had been changed every 3-4,000 miles.
I am yet another owner of a chyrsler Sebring with the 2. 7l motor going bad do to engine oil sludging that Chrysler refuses to address with a recall. It is in a 2002 ith 72,000 miles on the engine. Brian kleshinskio od.
Low oil pressure light comes on at idle.
The contact owns a 2002 Chrysler Sebring. While driving 30 mph, the vehicle lost power without warning. The vehicle was towed to a local mechanic and he stated that sludge build up and a frozen engine compartment caused the failure. The vehicle has not been repaired because the cost is expensive. The contact has yet to notify daimler Chrysler or the dealer. The failure and current mileages were 101,000.
The contact owns a 2001 Chrysler Sebring. While driving 65 mph, the engine seized without warning. The contact noticed smoke rising from underneath the hood. A local mechanic stated that the head gasket appeared to have failed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that there was a crack on the cylinder wall and the engine needed to be replaced. The powertrain was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 103,000.
2. 7 liter Chrysler engine declared destroyed by sludge buildup.
Sebring developed sludge problem, cost almost $6,000 to drop in a replacement engine. Chrysler should issue a recall and reimburse everyone that's had this issue.
Brake problems and surging problems with 2007 Sebring. This problem has been ongoing since I have owned my car. I already spoke to cbs3 on your side and they told me to file a complaint with you and call 1-800-lemon law.
The contact owns a 2001 Chrysler Sebring convertible. The contact stated that the check oil indicator illuminated while driving the vehicle. The vehicle began to vibrate, and then shut off. The vehicle was towed, and the mechanic diagnosed the failure as engine sludge. The current and failure mileage were 72,000.
With relatively low mileage the engine began to smoke. Then the oil pressure light came on when at an idle. Now, the engine needs replaced because it is worn out due to lack of lubrication. This should not happen when oil changes are done at correct intervals.
Car acts as if it will cut off when at a complete stop.
I am writing in regards to my 2001 Chrysler Sebring which contains a 2. 7l engine that failed in December 2006 while I was driving on I-75, a major highway in ohio (cincinnati) during a busy hour of the day (between 6pm & 7pm). There were no events leading up to the failure. I had my oil changed every 3,000 miles at a dealership. I was driving on a highway and my engine locked up. Nothing has been done to fix the failure. It would cost more to get the engine fixed than the car is worth, and I have not found anyone (besides a Chrysler dealership, which quoted me $8,900 to repair my engine) that would agree to repairing my car because no one wants to work on that engine model. My engine had 80,000 miles on it when it failed. I had my oil changed every 3,000 miles at a dealership, there is no reason my engine should have failed. My engine is still not fixed. Not only did this issue put me in harms way when the car stopped on the highway, but it has caused a financial hardship. Please advise if there is anything that I can do.
2. 7 liter engine of Sebring lxi seized up without warning. Had changed oil 1400 miles prior to failure. Purchased vehicle from auto auction within last 2 months.
: the contact stated the vehicle built sludge in the engine and caused the engine to fail permanently. The service dealer determined the vehicle had sludge built up when looking at a different issue and on the way home from the dealer the engine died.
I am another 2001 Sebring owner with a 2. 7l engine that has died. My wife was on her way home on the interstate when the motor died with no warning and approximately 10 miles from the nearest exit. Having seen Chrysler's lack of concern for the thousands of complaints, I now have a worthless automobile that is worth about $250-500 for a trade or a $4000-8000 engine replacement. It seems that whether you have maintained this car or not, there is no promise of satisfaction from Chrysler. My promise to Chrysler is that we will never buy another of their vehicles!.
I was on my way to work on June 28th the car began to knock and shake wildly. My engine just blew, I had oil changes regularly. After doing some research and working to find me a new engine, my mechanic said that that this engine is notorious for blowing and they usually go at 50,000 miles. At least I got 70,000. It is sitting in his shop right now, I can't pay for it. This car cost $30,000. New. I leased it now it will cost $36,000. And I will have nothing to show for it come December!.
Sudden catastrophic failure of the engine.
The engine mounts broke. Consumer was concerned that the engine will fall out while driving.
