49 problems related to automatic transmission have been reported for the 1996 Chrysler Town & Country. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I have a 96 Chrysler t&c van the transmission was replaced almost 30 months and 38 k miles ago after it broke a shaft on the inside at 101k miles. Came to a stop at conner went to go forwarded and the van was in neutral in gear position. Dealer did not want to open it up just replace with new remanufactured from Chrysler. Said they were all doing that. Now the replacement unit just broke a shaft for the third gear (bad weld). This is on a transmission with only 38525 miles on it. This was a new transmission when it came out in 1996 and now with 2 broken shafts on two transmissions in the same van, what is wrong with their product and this picture? who would of tunk it? I placed 165k miles on a 1991 Dodge dakota without any transmission problems. What happens if the shafts break when someone is trying to get on the highway in front of 70,000 lbs of moving truck? trucks do not stop on a dime. Do you want your family in that kind of scenario? I do not think that most of voting americans do either. I live in a city, which has at seven out of the top ten of the most dangerous intersections in the entire state of alabama. When you place a car into drive, you expect it to go most all the time. You do not want to have to think am I going to be in an accident or maybe kill my family because the transmission is going to blow up, breaks welds, or break a shafts if I pull out now or not.
While driving at highway speed, transmission violently downshifted causing temporary loss of control. A complete rebuild of transmission is underway.
While driving 20 mph the vehicle stalled. Had taken vehicle to dealership, and mechanic said that problem is due to transmission.
Consumer has made four transmission replacements on 1996 Chrysler town and country Mini van.
While driving, consumer applied gas, but vehicle will not accelerate. Consumer had vehicle towed to the dealership, who indicated that the automatic transmission had blown. Please provide more details. Ts.
I purchased a used 1996 Chrysler Town & Country van with a 2 year extended warranty. Shortly after purchasing vehicle, I noticed a whirring sound followed by hesitation when putting van into drive or reverse. Dealership where I made purchase took van for a test drive and reported to me that that was normal. I went in again about a year later, while it was still under warranty, and complained of the same problem. This time they put it through some diagnostic testing and concluded no problem. I have this in writing. Well one year and one month to the date the transmission went. No longer under warranty, I had to pay for the repairs, they, however did not get my money. I took them to small claims, but lost. According to click and clack, as long as it was complained about under warranty they are still obligated to fix it. I did forget about complaining to the dealership about this matter. I remembered after picking my van up from trans. Shop. That's why I took the dealership to court. Do I have any rights left regarding this matter? please contact me and let me know, before I end up with an ulcer.

Automatic transmission cannot shift into high gear. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide further details.
The trashy transmission has been rebuilt twice, and when it downshifts from 4th gear to second gear, it gives a big push, a push big enough for u to hit someone from behind if you do not have your foot firmly on the brake pedal. Also, the emergency break is the kind you push down with your foot, and it just springs back up when you step on it. The transmission type is 41te, and I have doen my research on it. Chrsyler needs to do something, but what I am telling you is safety related. (tiresize: 205/65/r16).
I bought this vehicle used at 68,000 miles. Transmission self-destructed after I put 9,000 miles on it.
Without warning vehicle shifts down to a lower gear at highway speeds, causing vehicle to drop 15 to 20 mph. Vehicle has been repaired by the dealer. However problem has reoccurred. Please provide additional information.
Consumer noticed oil leak under vehicle. A pin got into transmission and caused it to leak. Contact dealer please add VIN .
Transmission locked up while driving 50mph without warning. Dealer has inspected vehicle, and will replace transmission.
The vehicle caught on fire, the consumer stated that the fire started in transmission, the insured stated the transmission was replaced in July of 2000. Claim number 55-s335-708.
Failure due to defect (not wear), driving power is lost without warning, oil spills out bottom of transmission through large hole.
While driving vehicle went to 25 mph and would not go pass that speed. Took vehicle to dealer, and they said that transmission needed to be replaced.
Second transmission less than 100,000 miles on van - first factory repair incomplete and parts missing.
Failure was preceeded by a leak 10 days before total failure of transmission.
Without any warning or prior symptoms, car slipped into a "neutral-like" state while cornering at 5-10 mph. Couldn't get back into any gear, forward or reverse, aalthough transmission shift lever operated normally. Aaa towed to my normal service shop -- they advised me xmission was "shot" $1880-2200 repair estimate. Transmision shop confirmed diagnosis and did rebuild for $950.
Transmision: internal failure. Transmision replaced. Water pump: leaking and belt tensioner bearing failed. Both replaced. Circuit panel: instrument panel (guages) works intermittently. Circuit board replaced.

Transmission was leaking. . . . Dealer said to find problem, they would have to open case [ for $ 600+ ]. . . They said to guarantee "any" transm work, they would only do a total "rebuild". I had an extended warrantee for 70mths/70,000 miles I was 3,000 miles out of warrantee. . . Called Chrysler and got no help. . . This "rebuild" cost $ 638. 93 in parts / & 1,100. 00 in """labor""" = $ 1,779. 11.
We purchased our town and country van new and have numerous problems with different componments of the van. This problem was the icing on the cake. Although the van has 111,000+ miles, we would not expect to have this type of a problem already. Especially considering the cost of the vehicle. After doing some research on the internet, it is obvious that Chrysler definitely has a problem that they are unwilling with the transmission that they are unwilling to admit or make right with consumers. Corporations should be held responsible for their actions, not be able to sweep them under the carpet. We are awaiting estimates for the repair of our vehicle. I will contact Chrysler tomorrow to voice my dissatisfaction. I have received two recall notices on this vehicle--none of which indicated a problem with the transmission.
We were driving 35mph when the van jerked and began gushing transmission fluid. I managed to get off the road.
While at a stop sign and in gear consumer presseed on gas and vehicle would not move, it died out.
Consumer feels fire started in the transmission, claim # 33-s335-708, nlm.
Brakes failed every three months, and transmission went out around christmas time. Windshield wipers come on intermittently.

Transmission runs hot, causing the seals in the transmission to harden and crack, resulting in a leak.
While driving the van at approximately 45 mph, the transmission simply destroyed itself with no prior warning. Upon inspection by a qualified repair shop, the transmission was deemed beyond repair. It had to be replaced at a cost of $1,600. The repair shop is an authorized repair shop for Chrysler through our local car dealer-thornton Chrysler Dodge in florence, alabama. I contacted their warranty manager about a claim as they van had 73,000 miles. At the original time of purchase, I had purchased an extended warranty package for 7 year/70,000 miles. He made it very clear that they would not touch this issue as the van was 3,000 miles over warranty. He also made it clear that they would not have covered the claim if the van had 70,500 miles on it. I was very dissatisfied to say the least. Since that time, I have come across a number of people who have had similar failures on Chrysler vehicles. I am writing this to you today as a result of reading the October 1999 consumer reports which further supports my claim that this was a premature failure of a major component and also a reoccurring failure of which Chrysler should be responsible. My wife and children were in the van at the time and are very fortunate to have been on a rural highway as opposed to the interstate or in busy traffice at the time of failure. If this complaint should be addressed elsewhere, please let me know by phone or e-mail if at all possible. Thank you for your help. Sincerely, terry thomas.

I bought this car 9 months ago from a Chrysler dealer it only has aprox. 47000 miles on it and they want 1800. 00 to fix it! I just paid them 20,000. 00 9 months ago! I'm upset!!.
The car was purchased after returning a new car (1998 Saturn sw1) back to the Saturn dealership that had gone through fuel injections and had rotor problems that Saturn would not fix. They gave me an option to purchase another vehicle as they said they may not be able to provide a new vehicle to replace the one year old wagon that was a lemon. I feel due to where the van originated from (virginia), and the last owner was in alabama and I purchased it in washingtion that possibly the odometer may have been reversed back. The transmission should not go out at 53,000 miles (3,000 miles after purchase). I spoke to four dealerships in seattle area who were no help. The service managers at each dealership was rude and said it was not their problem. From the research I have done on Chrysler transmissions this has been ongoing issue with consumers. I now have to pay $2200. 00 + to get the transmission rebuilt. I want all VIN inspections from each state that this van has been titled to see if the odometer was indeed turned back or if this is a defect that should be recalled. I need assistance as I have done all that I can to get answers with little assistance from both Chrysler and Saturn. Thanks much for any and all details you can provide. A recall should be done on this transmission if many consumers have had the same problem on a vehicle with less than 100,000 miles.
At 51,000 miles the transmission has malfunctioned and was replaced with a new one which also malfunctioned after only nine days. Cause unknown.
Transmission is leaking due to a crack on factory grinding point, and also leaking through seals.
