Engine Stall problems of the 1996 Chrysler Town & Country

Ten problems related to engine stall have been reported for the 1996 Chrysler Town & Country. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2002

Engine intermittently stalls partially or fails completely. Must shift into neutral and crank for restart. Never fails to restart immediately. My garage and Chrysler garage has not been able to duplicate. Power failure is insidious and dangerous with no prior warning. No codes stored. Design or manufacturing defect? dt.

2 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2000

While driving at high speeds or coming from a stopped position engine stalls and will have to be put in neutral to be restarted. Dealer has not seen vehicle.

3 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2000

While driving about any speed engine will stall without a prior warning and just everything shut down. This could have caused an accident.

4 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/07/1999

When starting up vehicle will stall. Contacted the dealer, and dealer told consumer that this was common. Dealer was indicating that throttle body should be cleaned every 30,000 miles. Vehicle stalled out while driving on highway and lost all power in the steering and brakes. Engine stalls when starting, and throttle body requires cleaning every 9000 to 10, 000 miles.

5 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 03/23/1999

Vehicle experiencing on-going/ intermittenly problem with engine stalling while driving, dealer notified and some repairs are being made but problem would reoccur. Could NHTSA help in this matter.

6 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 05/01/1998

The engine stalls with no warning, usually when slowing or coming to a stop, but it has happened a few times at speeds up to 45 mph. After the engine stalls, it will sometimes not start unless I "race" the engine to keep it going. The dealer cannot duplicate this problem. We have paid to have the throttle body cleaned and to have the fuel filter replaced, but the problem continues. Since vehicle has power steering and brakes, these do not function during an engine stall, and I am concerned that this could eventually produce a collision.

7 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/14/1997

While driving engine stalls in traffic, cannot be restarted for approximately 20 minutes, no warning, causes loss of vehicle power. Dealer does not know cause, replaced camshaft, crankshaft sensors.

8 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 03/31/1997

On-going / intermittent problem with engine stalling. Problem would occur while driving (slow or highway speed), did not matter at a stop position. Problem occurred on four occasions. Dealer notified and unable to correct the problem.

9 Engine Stall problem

The engine stalls at 65mph on the interstate. Dealer can't duplicate the problem to correct it.

10 Engine Stall problem

Engine stalls continuously unable to determine cause.
