7 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1998 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 02/14/2005

The vehicle, a 1998 Chrysler town and country minivan, completely lost all power steering while my wife was driving on a highway. Fortunately, my wife was able to exit the highway with the van overheating without damage or injury. As this is the second time that power steering has been lost while driving within the last three months, we understandably are very concerned about whether or not this problem is correctable and if the vehicle can be rendered safe. Our mechanic provided me with a service bulletin issued by Chrysler which identifies the problem. For vans from the 1995-1999 model years, the serpentine belt can slip off the idler pulley when the van is driven in deep snow or water. Unfortunately, the service bulletin gives no indication of what causes this problem. I do not want anyone (either in my family or outside it) to be a fatality as a result of this problem. While my mechanic can do the repairs (like he did the last time), he can give me no assurance that the problem will not occur again.

23 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1996 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 11/15/2000

I was stopping at a red light when I heard a loud thunk from the right front of the car. I thought perhaps I had run over a rock ro piece of metal in the street that bounced up and into the wheel well. When the light changed I proceeded for several blocks and then attempted a right turn, only to find that I could not get the car steered into my lane as the power steering had disappeared, unbeknownst to me. Fortunately there was no car waiting at the stop sign on the street onto which I was attempting to turn, or I would have run squarely into it. As it was the car overheated and completely expired while I was attempting to get it to a repair shop less than two miles away. This is not an unusual event for this model, as reported by the dealer and also according to consumer complaint databases. The problem was a broken serpentine belt and pretensioner. I feel that this is a safety threat, since one can abruptly lose control of the car when that belt breaks. Please look into it. Thank you.

Failure Date: 09/11/2000

The serpentine belt came off during a slow speed turn in the rain, causing complete loss of power steering. The tensioner pulley is the root cause of the belt tracking problem. It is misaligned. Information from websites and NHTSA database, and my local dealer in wisoncin confirmed that his is a very common problem with these engines and can result in a complete loss of vehicle control. I believe this represents a serious design defect and Chrysler should redesign the part and replace it for free.

26 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1996 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 09/02/2000

As I was about to turn a corner I heard a snapping noise and I was unable to turn. The steering wheel felt like it had locked. The car was towed to the dealership. The tensioneer, drive belt and power steering pulley had all come apart. I looked at the parts and saw a sheared bolt about 5/16" in the assembly. Should the whole system be dependent on such a small bolt? is a cars steering supposed to fail at 74156 miles? it was a very frightening experience. I think the steering should be somehow mechanically assisted so that when it fails it should be easier to steer the car to a safe place out of traffic.
