My car is stuck in park and will not move gears. I have researched on this and came to find out there are numerous of other customers with the same complaint.
2008 Dodge Avenger will not shift into gear. The car has about 50k miles on it. I have read this is a common problem.
2008 Dodge Avenger: gear shift will not allow gear to move out of park. Obviously a manufacturer defect. Dodge has not recalled to fix the part. The cost of repair exceeds $400. I have removed gear shift plate and have to manually move a plastic part to shift gears. This is obviously dangerous. Dodge is aware of the problem yet has not recalled in order to fix the defect - they are making the customer fix a mechanical problem at the customer's cost.

I have a 2008 Dodge Avenger and the vehicle will not shift into gear from park. There are no warning indicators on the dash indicating a problem and it was operating fine when I drove it to work. It will shift into reverse if forced but will not go into neutral at all. This is apparently a widespread problem according to the website autobeef.
Went to start my car this am shifter would not go into gear, searched online found numerous complaints same issues and people not being covered under warranty ,drive train or otherwise, appears Dodge needs a recall on this issue . Called dealership was told they are not aware of this particular issue however the 800 Dodge rep told me they would "try to help me out" gave me a case # I need to be assured that this problem can be fixed without me incurring any expense from the towing (as I cannot drive vehicle) to the repair itself if this is a common defect with a part. . Got up this morning to leave for church and the shifter for 2008 Dodge Avenger won't come out of park. Tried the manual override for the internal interlock mechanism to no avail. After much research online I've found this is a recurrent problem in this model within 1-2 years ownership. Car starts fine, brake lights all work, all other electrical works. Car just will not change gears from park.
I have a 2008 Dodge Avenger and my car cannot change gears I cannot get it out of park therefore my car is non operational.
On three separate occasions over the last six months I have had my 2008 Dodge Avenger 2. 4 liter w/t engine vehicle in the dealerships shop to have the transmission repaired. First, the shifting was very hard and the transmission was bucking and not shifting into gear correctly. The second time, the transmission was not shifting hard anymore but the transmission was losing power and bucking again and the repair shop did a computer upgrade repair and I had a rental truck for two days. Upon return of the rental truck, my car, which had a quarter of a tank of gas in it, was returned to me on empty with the fuel light on. The third time I took the car to the dealership repair shop the transmission was still bucking and losing power. This time I dropped the car off and when I returned to pick it up, not only was the transmission still having the same issue after the mechanics changed the torque conversion operation, but I now have a ding in the left rear door that was not there when I dropped the car off. The ding is not that large, however, it has chipped the paint off and the dealership repair shop told me that they were not responsible for the damage due to the authorization signature area where you authorize the dealership to do the repairs. This is appalling! the car would not have been dinged if it were not for all the transmission problems associated with this vehicle. I also have found that the dealership, who told me they would contact Chrysler and get a rep involved, did not do so after several phone inquiries to their sales department. This transmission is dangerous and the bucking is only doing further damage to the entire part.
Transmission would be sluggish when gas pedal is pressed. There are no leaks. Fails to change gears properly. Took to dealer & had diagnostic check, with dye, done. No problem found. Mechanic replaced transmission. Also had brake disc replaced due to excessive wear.
