Dear [NHTSA / indiana attorney general], I am filing a complaint regarding a serious safety issue with my vehicle, a 2017 Dodge Challenger, purchased on [xxx] from wetzel Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram, richmond, indiana). Six months after purchase, the steering column failed, leaving the vehicle unsafe to drive. The dealership confirmed the repair cost at $4,500 but refused assistance, and stellantis has also declined support despite the fact that this is a critical safety component necessary to control the vehicle. This defect poses a significant risk of sudden steering loss while driving, endangering both myself and others on the road. I respectfully request that your office review this matter for potential manufacturer accountability, safety recall investigation, or consumer protection enforcement. Thank you for your attention to this urgent safety concern. Sincerely, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

My 2016 Dodge Challenger has less then 38,000 miles. I don’t even drive it in the rain to keep it spotless. I have taken great care of it. It started making a knocking noise from underneath the car. Took it to the Dodge dealership & found out the drive shaft is bad. If you google 2016 Dodge Challenger sxt drive shaft issue you will see that this is a nation wide problem starting from 2015 to 2018. I think Dodge should be responsible for fixing this issue. Its not right,.

When making a sharp turn where you need to turn the wheel fully to the left or right, the car steering would lock up and a power steering indicator light would appear on the dashboard. I would have to shut the vehicle off and restart it for the light to turn off and resume steering functionality. The car was inspected by the dealership and the indicated that it showed the error code happened one time, however we recently purchased the vehicle with 19,000 miles, so not sure if the happened before we purchased the car and the used car dealer reset the codes. This issue has happened many times over the last 3 months.
The contact owns a 2016 Dodge Challenger. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the "power steering" warning light illuminated, and the vehicle lost power steering functionality. During the failure, the steering wheel was difficult to turn in either direction. After restarting the vehicle, the failure was self-corrected, and vehicle operated normally. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 102,000.
Was driving normally going 65 mph on the highway when white smoke was emitting from inside the steering wheel. Between the dashboard and steering wheel. Engine was fine and no warning lights came on. Everything ran great except for the white smoke. I don’t know what it could be. Luckily it didn’t catch on fire.

My car has come to a complete halt several times when I pressed the gas trying to get onto the speedway it will just have no power to it like it’s in neutral and I will have to hurry up and get over to the side and turn it back into park and then back into drive and pray that it goes. It doesn’t kick into gear like it should all the time my battery is always a hit or miss. I just spent $1000 on repairs and my power won’t even work. It’s an electric. And pray that it goes. It doesn’t kick into gear like it should alternator all the time my battery is always a hit or miss. I just spent $1000 on repairs and my power. Siri won’t even work. It’s an electrical nobody can get anything to fix it and now we’re out of state and it broke down again. It is so dangerous recently, the belt came off of it while I was driving and it caused liquids to explode and almost caused fire.

The power steering or steering rack appears to be defective. While turning on a curve, the steering will get stuck in what feels like a knotch, and can be weird to un-stick from that knotch. Can maybe cause unstable feeling in steering.

Power steering/rack and pinion. Yes. Power steering cuts in and out around corners and sometimes completely locking steering wheel with no control. When steering wheel locks up it’s you to lose control of car and could cause head on collision. Yes I had Dodge dealship diagnose and also independent mechanic. Manufacturer has not inspected. There were no warnings or any warning lights in car. Problem started about 3 months ago.
I had a recall fixed at Dodge for pcm since then service power steering comes on and the steering wheel locks up sometimes I'm driving and it seizes up it started at 37000 miles and when my extended warranty was up 3yr manufacture 6 yr extended warranty but since we purchased it in the beginning the warranty overlapped not fair since I should have had 9 yrs now I can't even drive my car more than 15minutes also it's very dangerous that I can be driving and all of a sudden can't turn the steering.
I was driving on the interstate and the acc/fcw light came on. Then soon after the abs light came on then the power steering system failed causing the steering wheel to lock while I was driving. I turned my car off in the emergency lane and restarted the car. All of them light when off but then the airbag warning light came on.
During an auto accident the ram emblem on my steering wheel shot off of the steering wheel when the air bags deployed and becoming a projectile and hitting me in the neck leaving a deep bruise and abrasions to the area the ram emblem hit. Its been nearly 3 weeks and the bruising is still present and the skin is still red from the injury. Attached and you can even see the ram horns in in neck. This photo taken later that day. If this can happen in my with my accident I was just lucky it didn't hit my eye or worse.

The lower control arm and lower ball joint broke causing me to hit another vehicle ,plus had to be towed due to damage , highway patrol called and took a report, was inspected my insurance adjuster after the accident this part would have broke while driving and caused more damage or injuries to me or my wife, the rack and pinion still needs to be replaced and is on back order until further notice no date given when it will be in by the dealership.
Last week I face a serious issue with my Dodge Challenger v6 2013 steering, while im taking a u turn (20klm /25klm) without any warning lamp or message the steering becomes hard that I couldn’t turn it and I used both hands to turn and caused my car to go on the side walk with the front right wheel. Starting from that time every time I take u turn its hard and I need two hands to turn but right turn so smooth, I went to dealership they said probably you need to change steering rack and pinion. I refused as it’s expensive and it happen by it self.

My vehicle randomly swerves back and forth when driving. It is very scary and could easily cause an accident and take my life. I’ve taken it to vigo Dodge and had 3 different mechanics inspect my car over 5 hours and although they each drove my car and experienced what I’m referring to, they didn’t know what the problem is. I was told to just drive it til it got worse and then maybe they could find the problem. I’m scared to drive my car over 30 mph cause the random swerve could make me lose control or even swerve into oncoming traffic. I desperately need help and don’t know what to do.

I bought this certified pre-owned vehicle from a local fca/Dodge dealer on 10/09/2021. The vehicle began exhibiting erratic and dangerous steering behavior, so I brought it to the dealer on 10/26/2021. The dealer was able to reproduce the erratic behavior. They replaced the electronic power steering gear, the rack and pinion gear, inspected the entire vehicle and did not find anything else wrong, see attached service order. However, the steering continues to be erratic and the vehicle cannot be safely controlled. I notified the dealer of the continuing issues, but they said the could not do anything else to remedy the problem.
Backing out of the garage, instrument panel lit up with “power steering assist off - service system” message. Car very difficult to turn now. Code scan shows code cc2217-00.

The car has an intermittent issue where at highway speeds it will go into almost a limp mode. Basically the check engine light comes on and car loses power and won't go over 45 mph. I have to pull over and shut car off. It will restart and operate normally for a random period of time. Very dangerous when on the highway and have to pull over to the side of the road. From the forums I belong to, this is a very common problem. There are even members that have bought a brand new Challenger and had this happen to them after a few months. The code that usually appears from this is misfire on cylinder 1 and even the dealerships don't know what causes it and hard to diagnose since it happens randomly. Love the car but very annoyed that this keeps happening and no one can figure out the fix.
The contact owns a 2014 Dodge Challenger. The contact stated that there was an abnormal sound coming from the steering wheel. The steering wheel felt loosened at one moment and then grabbed the next. The warning light that referred to the vehicle's ability to steer with the road conditions may be compromised. The contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer however, the vehicle was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 74,000.
Issue started with power steering going out for a few seconds in 2014 Dodge Challenger only 38,000 miles (happened twice) then before it could get serviced power steering went out with service light on (power steering resumed in about 5 minutes while I was trying to get to a safe place, service light went out also). I was in a drive thru lane, as I left it and approached road to turn right on a 45 mph rd is when the steering went out for the 5 minutes. Really dangerous, should be recalled for free repair.
Steering locks up making left turn intermittently in motion.
My 2019 Dodge Challenger was hesitant to take off even when the accelerator was to the floor. A diagnostic test came back and it was a gear 6 shift incorrect ratio. My vehicle was in motion within busy traffic, almost causing a wreck.
All of a sudden my power steering went out it's hard to steer the vehicle while making a left turn, on a city street with a lot of traffic and pedestrians. The road was dry. No indications that the car was having an issue prior to that. I checked the power steering fluid and the belt I don't hear a sound. I've asked several people about this issue and a lot of people have reported this as being a problem with the vehicle. I was in the middle of a turn and the power steering went out which caused me to almost hit the curb and pedestrians on the sidewalk. There has to be a resolution because this is a problem not with just my vehicle up with many others. When I bought the vehicle I was told that it had a new power steering unit in it.
Driving my 2014 Dodge charger car and the electric power steering cause my steering hard to turn. With no warrant. Good thing I was not on I-10 hwy. I was on the street. I could have been kill. I almost hit a car. Thinking it was going to go away because it was working fine. Then the dealer said the power steering need changing. Thousand of people is having that same problem.
My 2014 Dodge Challenger dies when I'm driving it. The most recent was when I was driving downhill on a winding mountain road. It died, and there was no place to get off the road. When it dies, the lights, power steering and power brakes all quit. Very dangerous!!! the dealer could find nothing wrong. There are many complaints about this on the internet, and Dodge is doing nothing to fix this. Like me, others have taken their cars to dealers, and they find nothing wrong. Something is very wrong! Dodge needs to get busy and fix this most dangerous defect before someone gets seriously injured or killed.
When the vehicle is in motion the steering wheel will lock. It happens when driving on the highway or on a city street. This has happened when changing lanes and while make a turn. On 1-11-2020 I was at the dealership to test drive this car, but when I started the car the dashboard lit up with multiple codes. The salesman had me test drive another vehicle with the same specs so that a tech could look at the codes. The technician looked the vehicle over and claimed everything was fine. Purchased the original car that had the codes on the dashboard. While driving home on 1-11-2020, the steering wheel locked when attempting to change lanes on the highway. On Wednesday, 1-15-2020 while in motion on a city road the steering wheel locked when making a right hand turn. The car was not driven again until Tuesday, 1-21-2020 when it was driven to the dealership. While the car was in motion and making a right hand turn the steering wheel locked. The dealership had the vehicle from 1-21-2020 until 1-25-2020. I was told that the steering wheel locking was due to a bad battery and the dealership changed it. When driving home from the dealership on 1-25-2020, the steering wheel locked up on two different occasions while making a left hand turn and a right hand turn. The car was parked and not driven again until 1-27-2020 when it was taken back to the dealership. The car is still there as of 1-29-2020 with no update on the issue.
The power steering fluid evaporates in the reservoir (the Dodge dealer told me this after I had the fluid checked and filled in 2018 because of steering problem) and causes the steering to become very rigid with quick turning. I had to make a sudden quick right turn to avoid a car in front of me (local street) and the car would not turn as I needed. The steering groaned. The steering felt very dangerous and this was totally unexpected. I am having it serviced this week again to check the steering fluid.
I was driving in the highway and as I turned to merge my steering wheel locked and I could not move the wheel. Once I stopped the car I turned it off and on and it said steering wheel motion off.
The steering is real stiff when the car is first started. It gets exceptionally stiff when turning left.
I initially got my alternator changed by my own mechanic before there was any recall on the alternator. Then some time last year 2018 I took my car in for the recall on the air bags. While my car was at Dodge they notified me that the recall on my alternator still hadn't been cleared since I never changed it with Dodge so I was like what the heck why not just get a brand new one through Dodge this time while they're repairing whatever needed to be done with my air bags. Fast forward to July of 2019 I took my car in to Dodge dealership for some shaking while my foot was on the break and for the gears not properly shifting. My rpms were going way too high before the next gear would shift. Service at dealership claimed to fix the issue but I was back a week later because my check engine light came back on. After leaving it there another several days they said they found the actual issue so now I shouldn't be having any problems. ( something was misfiring , a coil was changed etc. ) now sept of 2019 my car decided to stop on me while driving on the freeway almost killing me. My entire dashboard went crazy check engine light went off, air bags light, steering wheel , no key fob detected all while loosing power. Thankfully I made it off the exist with just enough power to get to a gas station right off the freeway before my car completely turned off on me. I took the battery to get checked it was completely dead, recharged it car started fine then went back to doing the exact same thing with warning signs all over the dashboard and leaving me again. I bought a brand new battery and still wont turn on. Being that I experienced something similar the first time my alternator went out I am pretty sure this is the same exact thing. I have had nothing but issues with this car since I got it will be taking it back to dealer but I no longer feel comfortable driving this vehicle.
Takata recall power stern tight alternator recal and air bag light came on and won't go off.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Dodge Challenger. While driving and turning the vehicle, the contact heard an intermittent clicking noise. There was no warning indicator illuminated. Also, the steering did not operate well. The vehicle was taken to addy's harbor Dodge ram fiat (843-945-3100, located at 4849 u s 501, myrtle beach, SC 29579) to be diagnosed, but the cause of the failure was not determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 59,000. The VIN was not provided.
