41 Steering problem of the 2010 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 05/25/2018

During its most recent scheduled oil change on may 25, 2018, the Dodge service department indicated that my 2010 Challenger srt8 with 56,000 miles has an oil leak that is leaking from the front of the crankshaft and the Dodge Challenger serpentine/drive belt is spraying oil all over the place under the hood, on the engine and directly into the alternator which the Dodge service department indicated could cause a fire! I contacted fiat Chrysler automobiles customer care (case number 34409843) and provided detail with after 5 customer care agents on 5 separate occasions promising me a callback (never received) wished me good luck with having Dodge address the engine oil leak / fire hazard. I have inquired with two other local Dodge dealership service departments and both indicated that they have never seen this type of issue on a 2010 Dodge Challenger srt8. On July 3, 2018, I once again contacted fiat Chrysler automobiles customer care and was advised that case number 34409843 was unilaterally closed by a supervisor without contacting me or the Dodge dealership service department that performs all maintenance on my 2010 Dodge Challenger srt8. Accordingly, I requested and the fiat Chrysler automobiles customer care representative opened up a new case (case number 34660813) case number 34409843 05/25/2018-gabriel employee id gw373 06/13/2013-jake employee id jr2692 06/20/2018-robert employee id rc2336 06/20/2018-lauren employee id luw551 07/03/2018-janelle (refused to provide employee id) case number 34660813 07/03/2018-doaa employee id dh1013 since the service visit on may 25, 2018, I have not been able to drive my vehicle for fear that it will catch fire.

Tl the contact owns a 2016 Dodge Challenger. The contact stated that the steering wheel made a creaking noise while driving or turning. The contact took the vehicle to el cajon Ford (1595 east main street, el cajon, CA 92021, (619) 312-4107) where the brake calipers were cleaned; however, the failure was not corrected. The contact also took the vehicle to carl burger Dodge (8355 hercules street, la mesa, CA 91942, (619) 463-9321) where it was test driven. The dealer duplicated the creaking noise and diagnosed that it was due to the steering wheel bushing. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. 44 Steering problem of the 2013 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 01/03/2018

Challengers steering always goes out. Their are forums all over the internet about the horrible steering issues of Dodge vehicle ranging from brand new models to older models. This issues makes it difficult to turn which is a safety hazard. Also the book inside the Challengers show that there is a power steering reservoir but it does not have one so even if low fluid was an issue we could not fix that.

45 Steering problem of the 2014 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 09/20/2017

Got notice on recall of alternator with possible steering malfunction, was told that remedy won't be for 5 months . Seems like this should be addressed ASAP.

46 Steering problem of the 2013 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 07/03/2017

On this date 7/3/17 my husband and daughter were visiting the library when our vehicle stalled. Thankfully they were in a safe location and had just parked. Prior to leaving the house my husband noticed a whistling sound coming from the hood of the vehicle. After the car stalles the vehicle was towed to our home. It was later identified that the alteenator has gone out. It was replaced. Now mpving forward to 9/6/2017 my husband and I recieve a recall notice in the mail from NHTSA stating in bold print and great detail that prompt action to repair this vehicle is needed. The recall notice also gave direction on how the dealer and NHTSA must rectify the situation in a timely manner. Action on our end was taken and my husband took the risk of driving the vehicle to a dealer sure that the issue would ve rectified. Now the part to remedy this recall is currently unavailable and no accomadation on either NHTSA or any Dodge dealerahip has been given to my family. This is risking a vehicle being driven on a road that was stated in bold print detailing the severity of the issue and the risk of injury and crash. Yet noone is concerned about the saftey of its customers. All that is veing asked is that a rental vehicle be accomatated until the recall is fixed. The recall states the vehicle must be repaired yet how am I suppose to continue on with getting my children to and from school and my husband and self to work. I am extremely concerned and upset that nothing is veing dobe to ensure the saftey and lives of your customers. Your taking the risk of injury with a unsafe vehicle on the road. And would greatly appreciate promt attention on this matter.

49 Steering problem of the 2011 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 02/24/2017

Driving my 2011 Dodge Challenger r/t on the highway on the second lane switching lanes approaching my exit. As I turned to the right lane all the lights on my dashboard went on and without warning my car turned off causing the steering wheel to stiffen up. Luckily I was able to stop the car pull to the shoulder and realized my battery was dead. I jumpstarted my car and was able to get to my destination which was nearby and I parked and turned off my car. As soon as I tried turning it on my battery was dead again. I called my roadside assistance for a jump and was able to get my car going but as soon as I turned the steering wheel my car seemed to have a short which caused all the dashboard lights to go and my car to turn off and kill my battery. Reading how many other Dodge owners have gone through very similar problems and been fortunate to avoid getting hurt or hurting other drivers. I believe this issue should be looked into a bit more since it seems to be more common and should not be at the owners expense. Ive been very happy with my Challenger to this point. I just want to be able to drive my Challenger comfortably not worry about my safety and know the manufacturer has done everything possible to take care of the issue and avoid the same problem in future models. I eventually would like to own a newer Challenger model. Knowing that steps are being taken to avoid similar issues on them, I can see myself getting one, even if asked to return the one I own now.

50 Steering problem of the 2013 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 11/20/2016

Power steering started leaking at roughly 60k miles causing steering issues.

51 Steering problem of the 2011 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 08/19/2016

The electrical system on this vehicle shuts the vehicle down when the battery isn"t strong enough to support the computer. This happens while driving. Causing loss of steering and control of the vehicle. The traction control shuts off and because the engine shuts down the power steering is gone and the power brakes . This happened to me coming around a sharp corner of an off ramp. I lost all control of the vehicle and almost went off the road. I called the service dept. Of my dealership and they told me this is common when the battery charge isn't powerful enough to sustain the computer. But there are no warning signals or anything within the car to tell you the battery is low. I did a system check when I pulled over and the system said "ok". I feel this is a serious safety issue. Some one can seriously be hurt or killed.

52 Steering problem of the 2010 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 04/18/2016

Purchased new in 11/2010. 2 years into ownership, on about 4 occurances, engine would shut off, loose steering control and brakes at the same time while making a slow right hand turn. Problem disappeared and thought it was a fluke of some kind. Now 3 years later it has started doing it again every time I drive it. When the engine dies you can barely steer and have to really pull hard on the steering wheel to keep from going into oncoming traffic. Brakes do not function properly either, you loose all power braking and it is very difficult to stop. I have searched the internet for this issue extensively. What I have found is about a hundred other different individuals on several forum sites describing exactly the same problem. Nobody had an answer to the problem and found just as many different things that people said were wrong ranging from ecm failure to several different modules and loose connections. When it first started it would only occur when slowing down and making a right hand turn. Now it does it at any time no matter whether sitting in a parking lot or driving on the street. You have to turn the key all the way off and then turn it back on to start it and there is always a delay from the time you do that till the time it responds. This is a very dangerous safety issue and a recall should be done as so many people have had the same issue without it ever being clearly understood what was causing the problem.

53 Steering problem of the 2016 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 04/16/2016

My 17 year old son's 2016 Dodge Challenger turns off while car is being driven. The ignition switch usually goes to acc (sometimes run). Also, the steering wheel locks up, the headlights go out, braking is difficult, heating/cooling turn off, and according to the manual the airbags become inactive in acc. My son has nearly hit a tree and he has crossed lanes into the opposite direction when the steering wheel has locked. The problem started happening at about 2500 miles 04/2016. It has happened from10 mph to 70 mph. It has happened 15 or more times and seems to happen after the car has been driven over 20 miles, parked, and then driven again. It has happened on all types of road--residential, city and highway. It has occurred while being driven straight and when turning, on level roads and up hills. The dealer could not duplicate the problem. The dealer contacted Chrysler detroit without success. They installed a special data collecting switch which we manually activated when the car stalled. The data was forwarded to detroit for analysis. I have attached service records. We have supplied photos of the instrumentation after the car turns off. My son started driving with one hand on his iphone making a video recording of the car stalling in late September 2016. . Read more...

55 Steering problem of the 2010 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 09/25/2015

Mystery shutdown. Intermittent electrical problems-shuts off while driving & lose steering & brakes. Terrifying. I¿m afraid it¿s going to kill me & my passengers. It¿s happened 7-9times, 3x w 5 passengers. Ave 1/10k miles. No common factor (slow, fast, rapid downshift, cornering, straight, side streets, country rds, highways, parking lots). Foot may have been on brake during all. Dealership found nothing wrong/no error codes. Cleaned throttle body & they sent away. Next time throttle body verified clean. July 2012 dealership said no flash to fix. I told them how dangerous it is. They gave me a Chrysler care number to file a complaint/get a case started on it. They wanted srt specialists in the loop. Other electrical bugs- not recognizing the fobs. Fob has been locked in the car twice. Signal drops out while driving & error ¿key fob not detected¿ flashes under the speedometer (pic taken at 70mph on 6/8/15). Summer/fall 2014, after ~4 shutdowns at low speeds, started happening at speeds greater than 45. Dangerous! it died going straight through a busy highway intersection at 45 mph at rush hour-nearly rear-ended. Then it shutoff while making a sharp fast turn at a blind corner; this time I almost slammed into the embankment. I knew I had to get it addressed before it kills me. 1st Chrysler claim 23728724 addressed 9/2014 by replacing pcm. Lost communication w pcm codes found. 2015 spring, shut-down starts again. Took to dealership in merritt island, FL ~9/8/15. Please check for codes, the car was shutting down again. Denied. Told to return to dealership that worked it 1st time. 3rd time 9/25/15, 3 senior engineer passengers when it died during rapid downshift turning event. During re-initialization, car abruptly jerked- passengers scared; inches from serious accident -slamming into a work truck & nearly rear-ended. 2nd claim 27895859 in work unknown.

The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering shaft needed to be replaced, but the part was not available. The contact waited until the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 9,102.

57 Steering problem of the 2012 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 03/21/2015

I was driving in the rain in the middle of downtown houston texas, when I heard something pop/snap then my car started pulling very heavy to the right (extremely hard to steer). When I pulled over, I got out of my car and saw that the passenger side front end was almost touching the ground. When I was finally able to take a good look behind my tire, I saw that the strut plate and strut rod had snapped into, making my car inoperatable. This malfunction could be due to a weak weld or something of the sort. But I do know that this is not normal, especially since I did not hit a pot hole or even a small bump in the road to even cause the snap. I am grateful to be alive because it could've been a whole lot worse.

58 Steering problem of the 2010 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 02/04/2015

The power steering has lost function at low idle in my low mileage 2010 rt classic, making it very difficult to turn.

59 Steering problem of the 2011 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 01/22/2015

My wife an I were on the interstate when the first incident happened, running 70mph, the instrument panel blinked and all intruments went down the car shut down, there wasn't any electrical to anything. I guess being a manual, it started back up automatically. The second I cidemt was when we were on our way home we decided to take a different way home because this had happened, it therefore happened again same problem but we were running 57. We stopped at a sonic shut the car off, when we started it back up it sound like it was starting out of time, the same thing happened to us again the closer we got home. The car is parked and has not been moved.

60 Steering problem of the 2011 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 12/30/2014

I nearly was killed today getting off highway I-10 when my entire car shut down. The entire electrical system failed abs, esp, bas, traction lighting all came on - power steering did not work- completely shut down with no recourse finally coasted to park in the garage close by on a downhill exit. I was fortunate enough to find an exit to the parking lot and literally coasted in without power steering or any electrical and was afraid the brakes would not work to even stop the car. Fortunately, it coasted and stopped. Previously received an alternator recall notice from Dodge, but was told they did not have any parts available to fix this vehicle. I had no idea that meant my entire car would die on the highway without the ability to even steer.

61 Steering problem of the 2011 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 12/29/2014

I was driving home from work and another vehicle was merging onto the highway on the inside shoulder. I made a normal lane change to avoid getting t-boned and my steering locked up causing me to spin out and hit a guardrail.

62 Steering problem of the 2010 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 12/16/2014

While doing an oil change on my car, I found that the power steering hose was leaking where the hose is crimped to the hard line. After some online searching I found recall 10v475000 related to this same issue with other Chrysler vehicles. According to the recall, Chrysler does not include the build date of my vehicle. I don't understand how my vehicle, which was built only a few months prior to the recall, would not be covered when the issue occurring with my vehicle is identical to the recall. Power steering lines on a 3 year old car should not fail this early.

63 Steering problem of the 2012 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 11/16/2014

While driving home with my 11yr old son my car started making a high pitch sound. Then all the dashboard lights came on and the car stalled. Due to no electrical power, I couldn't use my emergency lights. To prevent rear end crash, I had to hand signal to cars to go around. Vehicle was towed to my home. Had the car diagnosed and was told the alternator had went bad. The cost for parts and labor is 900-1000$. I have not had the vehicle fixed. I contacted Chrysler and was told the list was still being compiled of VIN's affected and they would begin to notify customers Dec 5th. Chrysler is not reimbursing for any towing or rental car expenses due to this recall.

64 Steering problem of the 2014 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 09/12/2014

The contact owns a 2014 Dodge Challenger. While driving approximately 115 mph, the vehicle shook violently. The failure occurred on three occasions. The dealer was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 500.

65 Steering problem of the 2012 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 07/23/2014

I have a hard time steering my car. I have the electrical hydraulic power steering on my car. The owner manual does not match the car. I have after market wheels on my car and they have been on there for over two years now. Never had any problems until now. The dealership say its my after market rims but a lot of Dodge have after market rims and does not have any problems and have a lot more miles on there car than I have on mines. I think its a issue with the power steering and Dodge will not take owner ship of it.

66 Steering problem of the 2011 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 07/19/2014

I was driving my car on 7/19/2014 as normal and I noticed several drivers from other cars pointing at my hood. There were no dash indicator lights on . I pulled over and the car powered down and smoke started billowing through the vents and from under the hood. I released the hood and noticed the alternator smoking heavily and melting, I thought it was about to catch fire. I had the car towed to the dealership and was told 4 days later the alternator had to be replaced, not covered under warranty; due to it being considered an accessory; would cost 723. 00 to repair. Being that the car only has 44,000 miles on it, I was very disturbed. My car was ready in about 4 days which I went ahead and paid for repairs as I need the car for transportation and even after I saw the countless reports of similar incidents on the internet and was appalled this part had not been recalled. I figured most cars have to have at least one major repair so I'm good for awhile. Wrong! the same week the car got out of the shop, I started hearing a clicking under the gear shift and the abs, esp and traction came on the dash. I contacted the dealership to make an appointment to bring it in but it isn't until a week later. I was told as long as the light doesnt steadily remain on, I should be fine until my appointment driving it. Today I was riding along on a highway and the car begin to lose power not allowing me to accelerate or steer, now the malfunction light is on. Dodge really needs to consider recalling this model as problems start to occur at 40,000 miles from what I have read and can cause serious safety issues because it stalls with the indicator lights following leaving consumers with the inability to steer or get out of the dangers of incoming traffic.

67 Steering problem of the 2011 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 07/04/2014

Problem identical to prior customer complaint with all internal lights and gauges blinking. Driving down the road and the lights started flashing, enging started racing, smelled rubber, speedometer racing. Pulled over to the side of the road. Put the car in park, and the light show continued. All of a sudden the car cut off and never started again. Had to call a tow truck to pick it up and take to repair shop. Repairman exact words were "the alternator is fried and it destroyed your battery". After a new battery was put in the car, the alternator started smoking. Battery/installation $250, alternater/installation $750. Could only get alternator from Dodge dealership because they claim the car was too new for an aftermarket alternator. . . . And was on back order. I may not be the smartest sperson in the world, but doesn't it seem that there are some major issues going on if the supposedly new alternator is on backorder. Had my son and I been on the highway driving and the car cut off, this story may have had a different ending. I'm very concerned that there has not been a recall. I hope and pray that Dodge is not waiting for someone or some family to lose their life before making this a safer vehicle. This not only puts Dodge Challenger owners at risk, but the other drivers on the road as well.

68 Steering problem of the 2014 Dodge Challenger

Failure Date: 06/16/2014

Car did a curb check and the steering knuckle broke along with everything else on the passenger front side with the wheel falling off and folding under the car taking out the front wheel well fender and cracking the windshield.
