Dodge Dakota owners have reported 7 problems related to headlights turn off while driving (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The driver headlight quit working. I went to the store to replace it thinking it had burnt out. When I replaced the light it did not work still and the old headlight still had both filaments proving it was still good. I took the truck to the dealership after both headlights quit working on me when I was out at night driving less than a 10th of a mile from home. I managed to not get in an accident. The dealership told me that the ctm and head light switch were bad however the ctm was a "obsolete" part and they were unable to get me one. After they released my truck back to me to drive as I please, I was able to purchase an older ctm from a 2003 4x4 automatic Dakota 4. 7l. Now my lights work and I have a "guarantee" from the ebay seller that it will work for 6 months. I have a seriously dangerous vehicle and I can not trust my headlights will not go out at any time so I can not drive it at night in good confidence or moral conscience. The dealership lilithia Dodge of roseburg oregon has record of my truck being in their possession for multiple days before releasing it back into my possession without doing anything but a diagnostics test.

While driving on interstate 24, near clarksville, TN, at 2015 hours, my headlights completely shut off while driving. After a a span of 15-20 seconds with no lights, I had to unsafely pull over on the shoulder of the road. After which my headlights began to flicker on and off, for spans of 1-3 seconds. From the time of the first incident to now, my headlights, internal lights, windshield wipers, and tail lights are all inoperable and unsafe to drive during bad weather conditions, or limited viability due to light. From my research this is an extremely frequent problem with Dodge Dakota and Dodge durango owners, with vehicles made between the years of 01' - 03'. I contacted Dodge about the problem and requested assistance, and they were unwilling to help or fix the problem, even though I told them it was unsafe, and that my situation was not an isolated incident. I honestly believe, if this were to happen to a less experienced driver, or to a driver in a situation of bad weather or late at night. It could result in serious injuries or tragic loss of life.

Head lights flicker and turn off intermittently whether driving or at a stand still. This has occurred since this vehicle was purchased used and is a common problem with this and the Dodge durango. Have been stopped twice by local law enforcement. The vehicle is stock with no aftermarket additions.
