Dodge Dakota owners have reported 30 problems related to rear suspension (under the suspension category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Since my purchase in August of 2002, I have had several close calls with my Dodge quad cab. So far I have almost hit the divider on the freeway and a car head on at the top of a hill. There have been several other close calls, but I had to stop counting. I am having severe problems with my rear suspension on my Dodge. I have had an alignment done, shocks replaced, and several attempts at getting it repaired by a dealership. Each time I have taken it in, the service department tells me there is nothing wrong with it but they have been having complaints mentioned about the problem. They said it must be normal and they can't find anything wrong. Before my shocks finally got replaced, I was at the point of finding a lawyer to fix this problem before I ended up dead on the road. But the service guy suddenly got my parts in stock. I am again to the point of desperately needing this issue resolved before something tragic happens to me or someone else. Please contact me as soon as possible so we can both put this hazard to rest.

At speeds above 35 mph the rearend of my truck hops excessively and causes the rear to sway to the right when driving over average road surfaces with minor bumps or irregularities in the surface. On numerous occasions I have almost lost control of the truck and am very concerned to learn that other 2002 Dodge ram 1500 quad cab owners are experiencing similar problems.
Rearend whines under power from 50-60 mph and while decelerating from 45-40 mph.

Rear end of truck moves over and makes truck uncontrolable. This happens at speeds from 35 mph and up. On the highway at speeds of 70 mph, the rear end jumps up and down rapidly on the highways. Many times I have to slow down to 55 or 60 to get it back in comtrol. I fear an accident is very possible. This problem has been ongoing since purchase of the truck. The dealer tells me it is just a truck and I have to deal with it. This is my 5th truck to own, and it is the first one to behave like this.
While driving the rear of the vehicle vibrated and the tires bounced up and down.

According to reports on the internet, daimlerchrysler has issued a letter reneging on the towing capacity advertised for the Dodge Dakota r/t \v8 from 6,400 lbs to 2,000 lbs. This reduction announcement letter has not been sent to me or many other new vehicle owners, however I have seen and have a copy of the letter provided to me by others.

The recent news of a lowered hauling capacity on the r/t , from 6400lbs. To 2000lbs. I use my truck to haul and when I bought the truck I told it could haul my 5000lb. Trailer and car. This effects me because I do not have another vehicle to haul with, and now I am being told that I can't use my truck for what I need it for. So basically I am told I have a $24000 truck in my yard that I can't use for the reasoins I bought it for.

Truck is being sold without stating towing has changed. Dodge is only offering a buy back of the truck, however the truck has been devalued and could be damaged if owner tries to tow more then 2000 pounds. Advertised it would pull 6400 pounds.
Rearend replaced on vehicle has had three rear ends replaced on vehicle however noise is still heard when driving 40-45 mph.
Towing capacity lowered to 2000 pounds without notice to customers.
Towing capacity downgraded from 6400 to 2000 lbs. No contact from Chrysler.
Towing issue.
When purchased new this vehicle, Dakota r/t, was clearly advertised as having a towing capacity of 6400 lbs. Daimlerchrysler now announcing a downgrade of that to 2000 lbs. . I have not been contacted by daimlerchrysler of this fact the only reason I know of this is from other dokota r/t oweners. Daimlerchrysler will not state why they are reducing this. I think this must be a real saftey hazzard. I did receivie an e-mail that a nother r/t owner lost control while towing and hade a minor wreck. Being that daimlerchrysler has not contacted all r/t this must mean that others are towing more than 2000 lbs. I have towed neer to 2000 lbs before I found out. (not from daimlerchrysler) they need to the stand up and let all of us know before somebody gets hurt or killed.
I bought a Dodge Dakota rt in March of this year. After owning the truck for approximatly 3 months I was made aware of a reduction in towing capacity from 6400 pounds to only 2000 pounds. I called daimler Chrysler a number of times and was told that only trucks built after febuary 1st were eligible for a buyback, my truck was built febuary 6. The representitive I spoke with from Chrysler told me that I should have had a yellow card placed in my owners manual stating the reduction. I brought the manual to the dealer and had the service manager look through my manual, and he too did not see the yellow card. I was never told of the reduction when I bought the truck and I was not on any mailing list from Chrysler to receive a letter stating the reduction.
Towing issue - truck was advertised and sold as having 6000# towing capacity. After delivery the owners manusl was modified to 2000# towing capacity. This causes a loss in the value of the as I paid for a feature that was not on the truck at time of delivery. I feel I was over charged for the truck and the truck has lost resale value.
The factory originaly approved the Dakota r/t for 6400 lbs towing capacity, and then suddenly reduced that to 2000 lbs, failing to notify many of the problem, not changing any advertisements, and not telling new buyers. . . . They refuse to disclose info on why they changed the rating, and do not have a fix for the problem.
Daimlerchrysler has arbitrarily reduced the rated towing capacity to 2000 lbs, although all the product literature for these vehicles states 6400 lbs towing capacity. They have not given a reason and refuse to warranty claims for failures due to towing more than 2000 lbs. ( dot number: tire size: 265/55hr17 ).
Dodge Dakota r/t's were originally said to be at 6400lbs towing capacity properly equipped. It has been downgraded to 2000 lbs max after I bought the vehicle.
When purchased new this vehicle, Dakota r/t, was clearly advertised as having a towing capacity of 6400 lbs. Daimlerchrysler now announcing a downgrade of that rating to 2000 lbs, retroactive to all 1999 and 1998 models including those already sold and titled. Failure to comply will void warranty.
While in reverse rear end locked up. Dealer has inspected and repaired vehicle. Please provide additional information.
Dakota r/t towing issue---Chrysler corp. Has lowered the tow rating on the Dakota r/t models from 6400 lbs. To 2000 lbs. . At first they told me is was the speed rating of the tires. When I asked why they do not just change the tires they told me it was in the lowered suspension that could cause frame failure. I believe it is time for Chrysler to offically say what the problem is. I also have a 1997 Dakota work truck and I bought the 1998 Dakota r/t to use as a tow vehicle for my classic car. Chrysler has offered to buy back the truck but I would lose about $3500 in costs and interest. I am not interested in losing any money on this truck because Chrysler made a mistake. Like I said earlier it is time for Chrysler to offically say what the problem is. Any help in this matter would be appreciated. Charlie hines.
Manufacturer has reduced rated towing capacity from 6400# to 2000# without stating a reason or offering an explanation. I need to know why the reduction has been made. Will towing 4000# now cause a failure/accident?.
This is my complaint. Dodge has issued an addendum for the r/t towing compacity weight. Since they sold the vehicle to me stating that it could tow up to 6400 pds; I would like to know what component(s) are failing to make them issue these addendums. Are the people who haven't received this addendum in danger on the highway if there towing a trailing. I can't get any answers from Chrysler. Maybe you people can.
Diamlerchrysler has revised the towing rating for all 1998 and later Dodge Dakota r/t trucks from 65oo pounds to 2000 pounds saying that the rear suspension can deteriorate and have a catastrophic failure . They do not intend to repair the defect and have only issued a warning to owners not to tow more than 2000 pounds . This is not satisfactory as the truck was advertised marketed and sold as being capable to tow 6500 pounds and will ultimately result in death and/or injury to a party .
The rear left axle failed.
