1 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2019

I have experienced this incident several times. When it rains really hard or when the car is taken through the car wash, some how the water reaches the motor. It will start acting up (stalling) and have trouble "going. " it will then trigger a check engine light and the motor will die. I have had the check engine light checked while on and spark plugs replaced per the check engine light. It is very difficult to plan any type of trip with the threat of rain while driving for fear of breaking down. The car wash will completely kill the motor and takes several times to re crank. Once the car is dry, it runs perfectly. I have red several similar issues online.

2 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2019

I am original owner and love my Durango but since I have owned it I cannot drive in rain. The vehicle sputters and dies and check engine light comes on. I found several places online of people with same complaint and the issue is the original cowl. I looked and mine does not have a taller ridge around the wiper bolts or a ridge to divert the water from running into my engine. I need the 2nd generation cowl that was improved part #55362453ak our family always buys Dodge, my husband has the 1500 truck as well as my daughter. I don't understand why Dodge has not put a recall out on this issues that so many are complaining about. I have taken my Durango several times to the service dept. And they could never find the problem but online after seeing everyone with same issue and how they are repairing I know I need this part. I ran water directly over the windshield and as it went over the existing cowl it did indeed dump into my engine and started sputtering and shut off. I tried to find the part but they are costing $180 with shipping and another $130 to have installed. I need this part like so many other Dodge owners and there should have been a recall for this ongoing issue. It is not safe for us because the vehicles stall in traffic and we have to avoid collisions with other drivers as well as creating traffic jams. I have to keep my vehicle parked under a roof to avoid rain and I cannot drive when it is raining. This has been an ongoing issues since I have owned from 2004 to present.

3 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2018

My vehicle stalls in the rain. It stalls at a stop or rolling speeds. It idles rough first and then stalls or shuts off. Sometimes the check engine light will come on, but not always. This only occurs in the rain. I've had several mechanics look at it, and they can't figure out how to solve the problem. I've spent a lot of money trying to get this fixed. Through online research, I've discovered that many other Durango owners are experiencing this same issue.

The failure mileage was unknown. Parts distribution disconnect.

5 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2014

After heavy rainfall, the engine would not start. The car was towed to a mechanic who told me that the engine was blown. No precursors, no check engine lights, now warning signs.

6 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/31/2013

On 12/30/13, owner started Durango and heard loud pop from engine followed by check engine light. Owner drove Durango to repair shop where he has serviced all his vehicles since moving to area 11 years ago. Shop manager inspected vehicle, noted check-engine still on and recommended engine diagnostic. On 12/31/13, shop called owner stating that engine diagnostic did not identify cause for check-engine light other than issue with cylinder #4. Shop recommended an induction service to flush carbon buildup from the engine. Shop manager called later, stating that after engine flush and during test drive, the bottom of the engine blew with holes in both sides. Estimate cost for rebuilt engine and installation is $8500. Shop pointed owner to an edmunds forum where owners were reporting similar and in some cases almost identical instances of blown engines on the Dodge 5. 7 hemi engine for model year 2004. Owner researched and found 100s of instances where the Dodge 5. 7 hemi engine blew between 70k and 110k for model years 2004 & 2005 under similar conditions (low speeds, little to no warning prior to failure, possible association with heavy rains). Three instances involved highway speeds, one downhill and two which nearly resulted in accidents in trying to stop the vehicle. On 1/8/14, owner called Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753 and spoke with agent for help in covering cost to replace engine. Owner stated his research and what appears to be an obvious design or manufacturing problem as evident by the large number of blown engines. Owner expressed loyalty via ownership of 1984 rampage ([xxx]), 1998 grand caravan ([xxx]), and 2004 Durango ([xxx]). Chrysler agent stated that since the vehicle was outside the 8yr/70k mile warranty, they will not provide any compensation of help in covering the cost of the engine and installation. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

8 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2013

On August 15, 2013, got up got into my 2004 Durango with a 5. 7 lit hemi engine and proceeded to drive to work as usual on my week day the vehicle showed no performance problems no check engine light or any other warnings on this vehicle arrived at work at approximately 10:30 a. M. And parked it , the car sat all day until 6:30 p. M. , I came out from work got into my car started it up and it shut back down I tried to start it once again , I ended up calling my roadside assistance to tow the vehicle to a shop the car showed symptoms that it might be a starter , so an attempt to do an engine diagnostic was done on August 16, 2013 at a local goodyear and they stated that the engine would not turn at all, they even attempted to hand turn it and to no avail it would not. At this point they said they did not have the capacity to fix it and I would have to have it towed to a shop that does major engine work so I did have it towed on August 16, 2013 to car czar and the said they were going to do a no crank, no start test on my car and on August 17, 2013 it was determined that the engine was totally seized and would not turn at all and that I would need a new engine. This auto care center also informed me that they could not fix this problem because this particular vehicle has special bolts and I would have to take it to a dealer also in my research for a new engine I ran across 41 pages of complaint from others with this same make and style of vehicle and they also describe the same problem with this car , I no some one who has also experienced the same problem with this same make and model , I bought my car off a carmax car lot a little shy of 2 years ago and it had one owner before me a very high maintenance vehicle and I'm a single mother with children I can't afford to take this kind of loss plus I'm still paying on it this is really sad.

9 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2012

My husband and I were driving to the store after work on April 24th. We stopped for a stop sign, slowly took off and heard a bang! we had to have the 2004 Dodge Durango towed to a mechanic and found that the rods were bent in the engine. . . Particularly the #7 rod. Not one single warning, no check engine light, nothing!! we kept the oil changed according to schedule! the truck is in excellent condition too; top of the line vehicle with dvd player and everything! now we're facing a $4-6,000 replacement bill. Why would we replace it with an engine that is going to do the exact same thing in a few years because of poor quality?! we are done with Dodge products and we're going to tell everyone we know what has happened to us.

10 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2011

When coming to a stop my vehicle stalls / dies! do not get a check engine light. Have had a Dodge computer put on it and no codes were found.

11 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2011

From the time I purchased this vehicle there was a problem with the engine (5. 7l hemi). When driving in rain or going through an automatic car wash the engine would start missing and sometimes die. This would make the check engine light come on. I took the vehicle to dealers in both kentucky & north carolina and to various auto parts stores as well as independent mechanics. The diagnostics reader always showed misfire in #2 cylinder but no one could tell me what caused it. Even though I kept the oil changed as well as other maintenance it started knocking and blew at 124,000 miles. I contacted Dodge and they assured me that they knew of no problems with these vehicles. I replaced the engine with one from a wrecking yard with 60,000 miles. Same problems with rain and car washes. It lasted 2 years and 21,000 miles. I contacted Dodge and got the same reply. After researching on line it seems there are hundreds of people that have experienced the same problem that I have. I was one of the lucky ones. Mine blew up in the driveway instead of on the highway. Dodge seems to have remedied the problem in 2006 & later models but still won't admit that there is a major and potentially dangerous problem in the 2004 & 2005 models. I feel that Dodge should have to repair these vehicles and reimburse the owners for repairs we have already done thank you.

12 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2011

I was traveling about 15 mph in my 2004 Dodge Durango with the 5. 7 hemi. The check engine light came on and before I could pull over the engine blew. It knocked a whole in the side of the engine and immeadiately stopped. The engine had 113,000 miles on it and maintenanced reguarly. I have read in several forums with several people with the exact same issue. I called Dodge and they informed me that there was nothing they can do. This is an absolute outrage, I am military and living on a fixed budget as it is and can't afford the price of another engine. With all the issues that the 2004 hemi's are having, there has to be an issue with this particular engine. When it would rain my vehicle would stall, so I am not sure if that has anything to do with the engine failing. Several people have had the exact same issue as that as well.

13 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/17/2011

1. Engine light remains lit: service can see no reason from computer diagnosis. 1a. Engine idles rough for several minutes after a rain storm. 2. Engine won't start unless gas pedal fully depressed: then stalls unless idle remains at least 1500 rpms. 3. Took to service shop: diagnosis is cylinder # 7 has no compression and computer shows 8 system faults relating to failure of cylinder # 7. Research from internet forums shows this is a common problem and the only solution is to replace the engine at a cost between $4000 and $5000. No guarantees replacement engine will not have same problem.

14 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2010

2004 Dodge Durango with 5. 7 hemi engine was purchased in 2007. In July and August of 2010 I experienced several occasions of stalling and hesitation, many times while traveling at highway speeds of 65 miles per hour as well as 30 miles per hour in local traffic. Vehicle has stalled with no power in traffic. Several times this has occurred during raining and sunny conditions. Various times check engine light has come on and vehicle was taken to dealership for service and keep for days. Chrysler dealership charged for sensor replacements and complete tune-up of plugs wires, adjustments, etc. This all happened in the summer of 2010. The vehicle had been allow to sit in our driveway for several weeks to cut down on driving it due to the performance issues and trips to the dealership. On November 25, 2010, thanksgiving day, I when out to start the vehicle and a loud thumping noise came from the engine without any previous warning of this type of problem. My neighbor told me that it sounds like a blown piston or rod in the engine. I have then found many similar incidents and complaints on the website describing this same dangerous and defective vehicle and engine as mine. Someone will be seriously injured or killed if Chrysler is not forced to replace or repair these defective engines. If this were Toyota, you would have no problem taking action against the manufacturer. You must do the same thing against Chrysler who has given the public a bad and defective product with an extremely high cost to repair and should not be shifted to the consumer while the company is provided the ability and protection to ignore their responsibility. Please do your job as the american public depends on you for justice and recompense on products that are inferior and unsafe. Please take action for recall and replacement and/or repair of all 2004 and later 5. 7 hemi engines right away. There are more than sufficient cases and reports as I found out that I am not alone.

15 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2010

I own a 2004 Dodge Durango slt 5. 7 hemi, under heavy rain, engines starts to misfire. It has been over 2yrs with this issue. This happens only under heavy rain. Water is apparently touching a coil or cable which makes the car shake as if it wants to cut off, if under extreme rain engine light turns off. It is horrible. I have not found a remedy for this and I find no recall as yet. I have taken to the dealer and complained but they cannot find anything. When I did a tune up Feb 2010 at the dealer, mechanic mentioned that he found the coil moist, which was odd. But this is a problem as I cannot drive the car under heavy rain conditions. Im afraid of getting stuck in the rain or engine going bad if I don't fix this.

16 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2008

In June I had an incident where my engine stalled while I was driving on a side street and at that same time the check engine light had been coming on and off. I brought it to the dealer, but of course the light was not on. They hooked it up to the computer and found no problems. I have been driving it and the light has come on and off over these few months. While driving I have noticed over the past month or two that on occasion, when I am driving anywhere below 50 mph, the rpm needle would drop. Sometimes it was a small drop but you could still feel the loss of speed. At other times it was a significant drop and you would feel the car jerk as it resolved itself. On 3 occasions the engine did stall completely like in June. Last night it become more problematic. It cont to do the above but very frequently and now if I stop at a light or to make a turn, when I push the peddle the car goes very slowly and the only way to get it to not stall is to give it more gas and this makes the car sprint forward. I had to turn into traffic and almost had an accident because of this. This is very dangerous in my opinion and it looks like many others are having similar issues. I agree with some of the others that there should be a recall. It's just a matter of time before someone gets hurt.

17 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2008

I am having problems with my 2004 Dodge Durango. My engine light and throttle light comes on and the engine light stays on and the throttle light blinks. This happened last year in July and it is happening again this year. I bought my auto to the dealer and due to the fact that the light was not on at that time, they couldn't do anything. They just cleaned out the throttle plates and I was fine until now. My auto stopped on the main road while I was stopped at a red light. I had my 2 children under 4 years old with me and very scared. Noone can find the problem. Has there been a recall on my auto in regards to this?.

18 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2006

While driving on I-91 south in MA (in the evening, with two of my kids ages 5 & 7) in my 2004 Dodge Durango SUV the engine suddenly and unexpectedly cut out - turned off. The vehicle lost power steering and power brakes. The dashboard lights went dark. The headlights remained on and the radio continued to function. The car was in drive and the ignition key was in the proper position - this was not caused the my having inadvertently put the car in neutral or park, etc or by the car having been inadvertently turned off. This was a sudden engine shut down while traveling at highway speeds on an interstate. Fortunately, I was able to put the flashers on (they worked) and coast over to the shoulder and stop the vehicle. I shifted the transmission from drive to park. I turned the key to the off position. I checked the headlights -- they went on and off. I checked the radio it went on and off. I waited a moment to collect my thoughts. Then, I turned the key and the car started right up no problem. I let the engine idle for a moment and checked for any engine warning lights - there were none. I put the vehicle in drive and proceeded on the shoulder for a short distance to see if the car would go. It did. I was able to enter back on to the interstate and resume by trip. The vehicle functioned perfectly normally for the remainder of the trip. I vehicle has also continued to function properly since then without incident. This engine cut out problem had never happened before. I am concerned, however, that the problem could recur at any time without notice. While fortunately this time that an accident did not occur and no one was injured, it is entirely possible that given a different situation and this same problem happened there could easily be an accident resulting in death and/or serious bodily injury, as well as property damage. A mechanic look at the vehicle and didn't find anything wrong.

19 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2004

While driving the vehicle on several occasions the vehicle turned off while making a turn. The consumer stated that the dealer has been unable to diagnose the problem. The dealers were unable to duplicate the problem. The engine light had never come on when it stalled.

20 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2004

My 2004 slt 4. 7 Durango had been idling, what seemed rough for a new vehicle for a few day (after a hard rain) when the engine light came on and the idle became very pronounced. It was taken straight to the dealer where it was found that the cylinders were misfiring. They pulled the sprk plugs and found corrosion and rust covering the plug and told me that water was getting into the firing area. I saw the plug and it looked like it came out of a much older vehicle, not a 2004. Well as luck would have it, we had another hard rain and guess what. This time I was told that engineers were going to design a deflector shield to stop this problem as although it hasn't happened often it has happened. Only thing is, no one can give me a time line on when this might begin, let alone be completed. And being a female, who travels alot and alone. . . . . Well, now thats why I purchased a new vehicle in the first place. . . To feel somewhat safe.
