1 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2014

After a rainstorm, I went to start my vehicle and it wouldn't turn over. Thinking it was the starter, I replaced the starter and vehicle still would not start. After manually rotating the engine back and forth a few times, the engine started but then had a very loud engine knock. The vehicle was not officially diagnosed by a mechanic but all indications are that it is engine rod failure due to hydrolock condition. This is supported by the idea that the engine would frequently stall during the rain and in the car wash, as many others have reported. It had progressively gotten worse over the course of a year until this happened. Vehicle was sold as-is for repair or engine replacement for fraction of retail value.

2 Engine Stall problem

4 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

Every time I drive in the rain the engine stall and make a abrupt stop. I have numerous service done by the Dodge dealer and many amount of money spent on trying to correct this major problem. In good weather the SUV drive great it's only when it rain when this happens. This a major safety hazard especially when your on a major highway and cars are driving at high speed behind you and your car stop. Is the Dodge company waiting for people to die in order to correct this problem. I'm the original owner of this vehicle and always had the maintenance service done.

5 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2014

Engine stalling when raining or going through car wash, reading on other complaints about this make and model of truck doing the same thing and it ends up blowing the motor, something needs to be done about this.

6 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2013

While driving at approximately 55 mph the engine stalled. I was able to pull it off the road safely and put it into neutral. I then restarted the car and continued my drive. This same thing happened approximately 1 week later when I was traveling 35 mph. I again had to put the car in neutral and restart. This time I was not able to pull over since I was on a busy street. Luckily the car behind me did not hit me. One week later the engine went out (per another complaint that I sent in last night). Dodge has a problem with this engine and should be held accountable for replacements.

7 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2013

I am adding my 2004 Dodge Durango slt 5. 7 hemi to the growing list of those with blown engines. Like many on this site mine was well taken care of with maintenance performed at regular intervals. I bought it brand new and was the primary driver for nine years. Besides the recall for the electrical panel, the only problem I had with it was decreased reliability of the air conditioner and the engine stalling in the rain. The first time the engine idled poorly in the rain was around 2009. It seemed to be intermittent and anyone I spoke to about it said that water could not get in the engine and it checked out fine. I truly enjoyed driving this vehicle and planned to drive it until it fell apart, which came sooner than expected. I drove from florida to ohio and back Dec 2012 and had no issues at all. On July 12, 2013 I drove to work and home with a perfectly performing Durango. On July 13, 2013 it rained heavily for several hours and I stayed home all day. The next morning when I went out to go to work it would not start. When I tried to start it only clicked and would not turn over. After several hours of research, a new battery, starter, and ignition fuse, we finally turned the engine manually to get it started. That's when the knocking engine was revealed. The water entering the engine during the heavy rain caused the engine to hydra lock and that is why it would not start. I am truly amazed after my research on this site and others that there have been hundreds of other 2004 Durangos that this has happened to that clearly proves that this was a defect in the year model. The older models last for 200,000 to 300,000 miles. My husband has a ram truck with 175,000 miles and still runs fine. I would truly hope the company would recognize this and offer some type of reimbursement to the owners of these vehicles. This incident caused me much emotional and financial strain.

8 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2012

The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Durango. While driving approximately 35 mph and making a right turn, the engine stalled without warning. The failure only occurred during inclement weather or after the vehicle was washed. The vehicle would only restart after the vehicle was completely dry. The failure occurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The technician diagnosed that water leaked into the engine and spark plugs, which caused corrosion. The spark plugs were replaced, but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 115,000.

9 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2012

The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Durango. The contact was driving 25 mph when the engine stalled. The contact stated that prior to the failure, the oil warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the dealer confirmed that the engine rod failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure and the current mileages were 120,000.

10 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2011

My passenger and I were sitting at a red light. The check engine of my 2004 Dodge Durango limited (5. 7ltr) came on, then the battery light came on and both of those lights started to flicker. There was a loud squeal and a pop, then the engine stalled and I felt the brake pedal fall straight to the floor. White smoke started to emerge from the engine compartment, which quickly turned a thick black color. I couldn't even see through the smoke, as it was so dense. I grabbed my phone and proceeded to call roadside assistance to get the vehicle off of the road (the vehicle was blocking a lane of a major highway in my town). I started to smell burning plastic and thought, "am I on fire?". My passenger instructed me to lower my window because another driver was yelling something and making hand gestures. When I tried to use the windows, I noticed that I had lost all power. In a panic I opened the door and instructed my passenger to do the same. That was when we heard what the other drivers were screaming. "get out of the truck, it's on fire!". When I turned to get out of the vehicle, that was when I saw the flames flowing up the windshield about 4" long. We jumped out of the vehicle and ran across the road to the curb, turned to view the vehicle, seen that it was a large fire and decided to run about 200-300 feet away from it. Just in case it exploded. The firemen were there in under a minute, but the vehicle was engulfed in flames in about 30 to 45 seconds. I have a large family and it's a good thing they were not all with me, as is the case 90% of the time. I do not know if I would've had time to get three small children out of their carseats in time. This could've ended much worse than it did.

11 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2011

SUV had been running just fine, with no warning on a Saturday morning I loaded up the kids to go to the pool and started the truck. It sounded like rocks being thrown around in the engine and my husband in the garage saw sparks under the car. I turned it off immediately. Had the truck towed to the Dodge dealer where it was originally bought and received all of its service and it turns out the engine threw a rod. 2004 hemi with 102000 miles. Dodge dealer told me they could fix it for just over $10k with a new engine or $7500 for a used engine - absolutely ridiculous! upon internet search, appears that too many 04 hemis have had this problem. I'm not ready to part with this truck, I expected to run it for many many many years - not 7. Chrysler owes the consumers for this shoddy engine. * ended up going with a remanufactured jasper engine installed by motorworks in monmouth, NJ - $6500. This is far too much to spend on a 7 year old car, I will never buy a Dodge again.

12 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2010

Traveling uphill at 65 mph traffic came to a halt, I removed my foot from the gas pedal to apply the brakes and then the engine stalled. I was in the fast lane, my speed at this point was 5 mph (coasting , no engine) I had to put the transmission in park and restarted the engine. This has happened once before with less than 10,000 miles in a simular stiuation. I also own two 2010 Dodge challengers with the same type engine, I have spoken to many of the 2008-2011 challenger owners and they report the same thing happening. I believe that this stituation is wide spread troughout Chrysler with the hemi engines, computer system. This can become a very dangerous situation and needs to be looked at. Many of the people that I have spoken with, have mentioned this to their dealer's service department and Chrysler, however they have not received any satisfaction to the problem.

13 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2009

2004 Dodge Durango, equipped with 5. 7l v8 hemi, stalls sporadically with no advanced warning. The engine can generally be restarted immediately with little or no modification to the vehicle's configuration. When the engine stalls occur, all power steering and braking functions are rendered inoperative. Stalling events appear to be unrelated to weather conditions, or usage of automobile functions (I. E. Air conditioning, radio, etc. ). Most instances occur during low speed maneuvers, to include parking lot and driveway operations, and pulling away from stop signs or traffic lights. However, on several occasions, stalling has occurred during straight-forward driving, with little or no maneuvering on freeway or city streets.

14 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 12/25/2008

During medium/heavy rain the engine stalls badly or completely dies. Also happens during car washes, though not a safety issue then- just aggravating! :( restarts only after rain subsides. This creates a very dangerous driving condition- for myself and those vehicles around me. My research shows this is a very common problem for this vehicle. Despite countless complaints, it appears Dodge has refused to acknowledge or address it for several years, alienating many previously loyal customers (this was a very popular SUV). The factory waranty was expired/near to expire when most of us began to experience this so we had little recourse. As my vehicle was purchased new and has low miles for its age, I plan to keep it for the foreseeable future- circumstances permitting. . . Thank you for letting me post my concern here! I hope something can be done to correct this very serious issue. Long overdue! step up Chrysler and stand behind your product. Thank you again for giving attention to my concern. :).

15 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2008

Intermittent engine stalling while driving.

16 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2007

Mutilple experiences of engine stalling. Often occurs while stopping but has occurred while under way.

17 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2007

Engine stalls without warning.

18 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2007

We recently purchased a used 2004 Dodge Durango limited. Equipped with the 5. 7l hemi. We have owned the SUV for just under 90 days and on three separate occasions the engine has stalled when my wife was backing out of our driveway and shifting into drive. I spoke with a Dodge dealership on the phone a few days ago and they offered little help. I intend to call them in the morning and set up an appointment to have them look at it. This is the vehicle my wife uses to transport our two young boys to pre-school and herself to work. This is very concerning to us because the truck dying in the driveway is one thing, but what if the next time they are on the highway or in the middle of an intersection.

19 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2006

The vehicle has stalled on several occasions, while driving and while stopped. On two occasions the vehicle failed to restart for an hour or so. When the engine stalls the power components associated with the safe operation of the vehicle also are effected (ie steering, brakes, etc. ). This has led to a couple of near collisions on the freeway and surface streets. This is a problem that needs to be addressed. I have voiced my concerns to other owners that are having the same issues even after TSB items have been performed. The transmission also fails to engage when shifting from park into drive or reverse gears.

20 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2005

Approaching a left turn, while braking, the engine stalled. Approximate speed at the time of failure was 15 mph. Had to make a difficult left turn against oncoming traffic without power steering, causing the vehicle to strike a curb. No damage was done to the vehicle or injuries to the occupants. Put vehicle in park and restarted the engine. Vehicle seemed fine after that.

21 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2005

2004 Dodge Durango with hemi engine has stalled twice without warning in past 6 months. When the engine loses power steering the vehicle is almost impossible. The engine has stalled while merging onto a freeway and also on a residential street. On the residential street I went up on the sidewalk due to lack of steering.

22 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2005

Events leading up to engine stall while driving. Every gauge on dash broad will light up and then the engine will stall while driving. Everything then goes dead. This is the forth time this has happened. Everytime we bring it into a Dodge service depart. They tell us that they can't find anything wrong and send us back on the road. Was even told that the owner of the dealership drove it and it didn't stall so nothing wrong with it. It has been happening every two to three months. Most recently July 1, 2005. This time it does have a CO-pilot attached, but was told by dealership, that it probably won't find anything. The dealership has records of the exact dates. It has happened four times in a ten month periiod. I have had the car the whole time; brand new off the lot. My complaint is that all the dealership is doing is putting on the computer and sending us back on the road with an unsafe and dangerous vehicle.

23 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 05/26/2005

Durango 2004 5. 7 hemi 4x4 slt. Three times in two months, I have been driven at low speed either in a car park or making a turn from a stop and the engine stalls. I then put it in park or neutral and then it starts fine and I'm able to drive it. This is highly dangerous and was lucky I could pull over and restart it. Dodge needs to look into this before someone dies.

24 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2005

Since purchasing Dodge Durango 2004 hemi 5. 7 in februrary 2004 an engine stalled 3 times without any reason. All times it happened after a complete stop at stop light or in a parking lot. The only way to restart an engine was to turn off a key, wait a little bit and start an engine once again. Dealer (westgate Dodge in raleigh, nc) made an investigation and didn't find anything wrong. The only thing what he did was to flash pcm, which leads to reducing an engine power and decreasing a fuel economy. I don't feel safe because this may happen somewhere in a middle of a road, which may lead to an incident and/or crash.

25 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 11/19/2004

Vehicle is experiencing problem with engine stalling. Vehicle has been to the dealer on four separate occasions, and they are unable to duplicate the problem.

26 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2004

To whom it concerns: my wife and I lease a 2004 Dodge Durango equipped with the 5. 7 liter hemi engine. Over the last several months the vehicle engine stalls and quits during day to day driving. There is no pattern to the stalling. We have taken the Durango to dealers in tyler (add name) and huntsville (team Dodge) on several occasions. Neither dealer has been able to fix the vehicle. We have also contacted the Chrysler "hotline" with no resolution. My wife drives this vehicle every day. She is now 9 months pregnant. We also have a son (12) and a daughter (9). My wife is the usual "victim" of the stalling. It has happened in dangerous situations such as turning in traffic. She is a nervous wreck because she never knows when it is going to happen. Shortly she will be driving this vehicle with an infant. My family is at risk every time we start the engine. Team Dodge met with the Chrysler regional manager to plead our case and seek a remedy. His response was callous and uncaring. We could turn the vehicle back subject to penalties for early termination and mileage. If we simply turned the vehicle back, Chrysler would classify it as a "repossession. " Chrysler is essentially forcing us to continue to operate a vehicle that is dangerous to us and the driving public. Why are we being penalized for Chrysler's defective product? if we can not come to a resolution that is harmless to us, we will have no choice but file a lawsuit against Chrysler. Sincerely yours, jason miller.
