5 Steering Column problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

2005 Durango 4. 7 v8 hemi my vehicle randomly shuts down on its own, locking the steering column, when slowing down and turning at the same time as when coasting into a parking space or coming to a stop. Also, on some of these occasions, all interior electrical components seem to go out, inst panel, radio, fan/blower, etc. Brought in multiple times for inspection, they say they find nothing. In last 6 months, 4wd light blinks as if its changing from awd to 4wd on its own, sometimes can hear it engaging under car when using key fob locking or unlocking, and when turning into a parking spot it feels like it changed to 4lo as its almost skipping/hopping like trying to take a turn with 4wd and rpms go way up like I'm in a low gear. Many, many of the same complaints on Dodge forums with many people just throwing money at it and having multiple things replaced etc, just to find out its not fixed. Needs to be recalled soon.

9 Steering Column problem of the 2002 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 04/10/2008

On 04/10/08 cust#3792938 inv#15199 I took my car for recall #g28 ignition/park shift interlock. I drove off the lot, noticed the check engine light on. It was not on when I took my car in. I was all ready on the freeway & was all ready late for an appointment. I could not move my steering wheel to the level I had it before I drove into the lot. I took my car back the 15th for them to adjust the steering wheel (I could have had an accident). They told me the steering wheel tilt knob was gone. The service manager was very helpful, told me he would order the part at no charge. I forgot to mention the check engine light. I waited more than 2 days. On the 19th I returned, inv# 151350, & was held up for 1hr, only to be told the part had been used on another car. The service advisor wanted to blame me for the missing knob. He wanted to charge me to connect their diagnostic machine on my car. I told them I would not pay for this service. The service manager told me the diagnostic machine was broken & they would have to order another one. It seemed funny to me, being that they had a lot of customers after I arrived. What kind of repairs were they doing on cars without a diagnostic test on them? when I have taken my car in they have always run those diagnostic tests. I was told on the 19th by the service manager he would accommodate me & have someone go out to my home to put the knob on my car. He also said stated that he would look into the code (check engine) to see if it had anything to do with them pulling apart the steering column. What code? being that he told me the diagnostic machine was not working. Now I am waiting for the part & most likely will have to drive around with that check engine light on until I can afford to have them evaluate it. It seems to me that it was not a big issue with them being that they were not that concerned about the check engine light when they handed over the car after they replace the recall part on the 10th.

11 Steering Column problem of the 2001 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 08/21/2006

When I bought the truck I put on a new set of tires and had the alignment done at a fire stone on 8/16-21/2008. The fire stone told me my ball joints were going out. And they said the good news is that they are under recall. I took it to the dealer they looked up the VIN. # and charged me little over $60. 00. In the end they told me that the service was done already and told me the miles that it was done at. At that time I still had 20,000 miles to go before I hit that amount. The shop manager told me that "someone must have put the wrong miles in because we check it and there done that is why we are charging you a fee. So I went to another dealer and asked them. They looked up the VIN. # and said "this service has already been done and if they take it in it will just cost me another $60. 00. " I contacted Chrysler and told them my story and asked them about all the wear and tear that these bad ball joints are causing. They said that the service was done and there is nothing that they can do. 1year later and 1 set of tires, on 5/20/07 I looked myself under the truck and looked for what the fire stone manager told me to look at. Just to find that the service had never been done. The reason I did this, because fire stone would not replace the tires due too poor upkeep. I had moved to pineville la when all this took place. I went in to a dealer there and told them my story and asked if they would look at the pictures that I took. They said yes and they said the service had not been done ,so the check into it and the dealer (west side in illinois had it in the computer as done on there site. ) they put in the wrong VIN# . The dealer in la did the recall, but I am out $60. 00 , 1 set of tires, cost and work of the lower ball joints (due to upper ball joints going out) and all that time running around. What should I do ? a lawyer cost too much! and now I have the recall on the steering column gear shift blocker.

12 Steering Column problem of the 1998 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 02/10/2005

There are popping and clicking sounds coming from my steering column and there is too much play in the steering. I brought it to my local dealer and they said it needed to be replaced. With only 55,000 miles on my vehicle Chrysler said they would not replace the steering column. The steering shouldn't have these problems with such low mileage. There is no preventative maintenance available for steering so I don't see how this problem could have been avoided. I will continue to pressure Chrysler to do the right thing, which is to take care of their customers and the defective parts on the vehicles they've sold.
