We were traveling thru a reduced speed area on a 4 lane highway at 50 mph when the vehicle went into what is known by me now as a "death wobble". I managed to keep it on the highway and pull off onto the left shoulder. I found the left tie rod had come apart so there was essentially no steering control. Luckily we had to slow down in the area as we were traveling at 70 mph a couple minutes earlier and had traveled thru quite a number of 2 lane construction zones with heavy traffic. Local Dodge dealers said there was no recall but this week I received a recall notice for this very problem on my 2003 Dodge 2500 truck. We know another couple this happened to from our town as well. I incurred a lot of expense over this and luckily there was no injuries but believe this is a wider problem than is realized.

The contact owns a 2007 Dodge Durango 4x4. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle began to shake violently. The contact drove to the side of the road and noticed that the front passenger's side wheel was pointng outward, away from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer who stated that the failure was contributed to a loose tie rod. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. There was a recall possibly related to the failure under NHTSA campaign id number 06v386000 (steering); and the contact planned to notify the dealer to verify whether the VIN was included. In addition, whenever refueling, a substantial amount of fuel would spray out of the filler neck. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 20,000. The VIN was unavailable.
The contact owns a 2008 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that there was an abnormal noise from the front end of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who advised that the tie rods were failing on both the front driver and passenger sides. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was contacted and advised that there was no warranty on the tires. The failure and current mileage was 41,000.
I was pulling out of my circular driveway steering left and the wheel base wouldn't turn. So I backed up and continue to go around the curve, once I reached about 200 ft off my driveway, my car come to a complete stop on it's own. I backed into my driveway dragging my passenger side front wheel sideways. Once I got out to check what was going on, my tie rod end had become completely stripped off the rack and pinion. After further inspections, somehow the groves on the rack and pinion had wore down so much it allowed the tie rod to strip and release. I was so glad I hadn't been driving with my children on the highway, this would have caused my vehicle to flip and probably kill us. I know have to replace my rack and pinion and tie rod and just replacing the ball joints on this vehicle not a couple months ago. I am very frightened to drive it now in fear this will happen again.

The outer passenger side tie rod end on our 2004 Dodge Durango came apart due to extreme corrosion. The ball completely separated from the housing. The rubber boot was still in place, but clearly had failed somehow. The result was the immediate loss of steering and vehicle control. Thankfully it was in a neighborhood and at low speed. The truck ground to a halt in the middle of the road. It was towed and ultimately repaired with a new tie rod end. I kept the old corroded tie rod hoping someone would care to see it. The should not have occurred in a vehicle 3x its age. The defective part is so badly corroded it looks like its been on the bottom of the ocean for 20 years.
2007 Dodge Durango limited, we took the car to get an alignment done in sept. 2010 at Dodge of blaine in mn. They said the left tie rod was loose during the pre inspection. We had it fixed. Less then 2 months later the left tie rod completely broke and detached from the tire. I was driving at the time with kids in the car. I've been told by the Dodge dealership that this is a problem that they see a lot of and Dodge needs to do something about but has not yet. Is Dodge waiting for a death lawsuit before they do a recall on this. This could be a very deadly problem.
The vehicle was operating at highway speed when the right front tie rod broke at the knuckle. There was no warning, abnormal tire wear or damage prior to the failure. The vehicle was on a eight lane highway and was able to get off the road with out a crash. The wheel sustained substantial damage from the loose tie rod end.
I just found out today that I will need to install a completely new set of front wheel bearings, tie rods and ball joints after factory recall. According to repair shop they installed the same faulty components to replace the ones that were recalled. I was told they should have installed the correct units with grease fittings, they did not. Going to cost $980. 00 to repair.

The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Durango. While turning the steering wheel, the contact heard a loud noise coming from the front end of the vehicle. The failure occurred whenever the engine was operating at relatively warm temperatures. There were no warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on two separate occasions for identical failures, but they were unable to locate the cause of the failures. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for inspection and the contact was informed that the inner tie rods failed. The entire tie rod system required replacement. The authorized dealer stated that the part for the repair was unavailable due to a massive back order. The repair part has been modified six times. The vehicle is not being driven due to the safety hazard. The failure mileage was 73,000 and current mileage was 76,000.
When negotiating a right turn through an intersection, my 2005 Dodge Durango would not turn in the expected direction of travel; thereby the vehicle proceeded into a ditch. No injuries to driver. No damage to property or other vehicles. After review of the vehicle for damage, the right front tire appeared to be severely misaligned and broken from the tie rod assembly. As of the date of this complaint, there severity of the damage to the vehicle has yet to be determined, and is still under review with the insurance company.
I own a 2006 Durango with 66,000 miles. It requires repair to an inner tie rod. Chrysler does not carry the part and forces you to change the entire rack and pinion steering system at a cost of 1000$. The failure of this part can cause a severe accident . How many drivers cannot afford 1000$ and are driving as I am with this part that can cause an accident any minute!!.

See first complaint 10237419. I'm having continued front end steering/suspension problems. Had the lower ball joint replaced on 09/28/07. By February of this year I'm experiencing what seems to be the same problems. . . Clunking sound (metal to metal) that starts when engine area is hot. After 45 minutes of driving. Vibration can be felt in the steering and floor boards. The noise is getting progressively louder and I fear that safety may become a issue. The Durango makes a sound something like the tire and rim is going to vibrate right off the vehicle. I'm now on my third mechanic. . . . Richmond, CA. Hilltop Dodge, who test drove my Durango and heard the sound on 08/12/08. They inspected the front ball joints, tie rods, and assured that each area was tight . They deemed that the vehicle is safe to drive, but weren't sure of the problem. They think it may be looseness in the lower steering shaft. Dealer/mechanic said the problem needed to be more consistent to isolate the noise. Inspection charge $124. 95. Problem has not been identified or resolved, but sounds similar to what has been investigated for potential recall in the past.
Vehicle has just over 74,000 miles and a very slight shudder and vibration from front wheels evolved into hard vibration at speeds over 35 mph. I took the vehicle to a repair facility where I was told that both front hubs and bearings had to be replaced because of wear, and the tie rod ends on both sides were worn beyond repair and had to be replaced. The cost of repair to my vehicle is approximately $1024. 00.
Ball joint failure on 2005 Dodge Durango. I find it amazing that a vehicle that 27 months old and driven soley on the streets of new jersey would suffer "ball joint" and "tie rodend" failure. The vehicle has only 40k miles and has been dealer service.
The contact owns a 2002 Dodge Durango. While driving 40 mph, the vehicle veered to the right and crashed into the guard rail. The contact sustained leg and arm injuries. A police report was filed. The upper ball joints and tie rods failed and caused the crash. The dealer and manufacturer were unable to explain why this occurred and stated that no recalls were available. In 2005, the vehicle was repaired under recall number 04v596000 (suspension:front:control arm:upper ball joint), in which the tie rods and ball joints were replaced. The vehicle had 46,000 miles at that time. The failure and current mileages were 69,000.
- the contact owns a 1999 Dodge Durango. The mechanic stated that they were unable to authorize an alignment on the vehicle until the upper and lower ball joints had been replaced. The contact had no warning that there was a recall on the upper and lower ball joints. According to the repair shop this failure occurs frequently with Dodge Durango's. The contact is aware of the safety risk involved while driving the vehicle. The dealer also replaced the inner tie rod ends. The consumer provided the invoice for service performed on vehicle. Updated 05/21/tr.
- the contact has a 1999 Dodge Durango and complained about two ball joint failures. At 50013 miles contact had to take the vehicle to his local dealership who replaced the lower right ball joint. At 92000 contact took vehicle to zrubek's for a front end alignment and the repair shop stated to the contact that they had to replace the two upper ball joints, and two inner tie rods. Updated 1/29/2007 -.
I have a 1999 Dodge Durango and I am having crazy steering problems. Ball joints and tie rods are gone. I have seen recall on 2000- but why no 1999. Same truck, same problem and I know I am not the only one.
While driving down a paved road the vehicle suddenly jerked to one side as I braked I attempted to correct with the steering but it did not respond. I came to rest approximately 3 feet from a 70 foot embankment. I laid down under the car to see if I could find an apparent problem and noticed that the steering tie rod end was hanging down. Upon further inspection I noticed that all of the threads on the inner tie rod end and on the steering drag link to be completely bare of thread. I am currently pricing the cost of a new tie rod end and drag link which hopefully will repair the problem, however the problem may have caused additional damage to the 4 wheel drive system. After talking to the local tire store and checking on the internet I find that this is a problem that seems to be occurring quite often on this model and could possibly be fatal if the driver panics or doesn't have the strength to hold the wheel.

In the early morning hours of 5/27 the right front lower wheel bearing of my 2001 Dodge Durango suddenly separated without warning causing the wheel to come loose from the vehicle. The caused the Durango to veer to the right and crash into two parked cars. The wheel, axle, bearing, rack and pinion and associated parts are being replaced. Old part will be saved.
Daimler Chrysler issued a recall (04v596000) for ball joint and extended warranty to 10 yr / 100000 miles for 2000 - 2003 Durangos. My question is why the '98 Durangos were not included since my 98 Durango had the same failure and the current mileage is only 69,000.
There was a noise coming from the front end of the vehicle at various speeds and tire wear was abnormal. I took the vehicle to an independent repair shop. Upon initial inspection, the upper and lower control arm ball joints were loose and needed to be replaced on both sides. The inner tie rods also had to be changed due to the loose ball joints. The total cost of repairs, even with my military discount was $950. The vehicle had only 65298 miles on the odometer when it was taken to the shop. Luckily I noticed the problem before the ball joints separated and caused an accident. This problem put my life and my family's life in harms way. 1999 Durangos should have been a part of the recall on ball joints. There is a NHTSA recall campaign id # 04v596000 regarding the upper ball joints. The vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall. However it is not included in the recall due to the VIN. 1b4hs28z8xf577617.
My 1999 Dodge Durango failed inspection due to failing upper and lower ball joints on both sides of the vehicle. In addition, the failure of the ball joints led to the failure of the outer tie rods on both sides. The inspector advised me to not drive the vehicle until the repairs were made due to their potential to cause a serious accident.
1999 Dodge Durango major front suspension issues - fails state safety check- see numerous discussions on the web is the an engineering analysis underway? bad need repair: both lower ball joints, 1 upper ball joint, both inside tie rods.
My Dodge Durango started making a clunking noise in the front suspension upon turning or going over rough pavement. I took the car into the shop and there was a failure of both the upper ball joints as well as the tie-rod ends, nearly separated. Per the garage, unusual for a 7 year old car with 66,000 miles. They need to be replaced before the catastrophic failure occurs. Replacement will include both upper and lower ball joints on left and right side and 4 tie rods. Old parts are available. Total cost of repair $1,100.
Replacement of worn front end suspension ball joints and tie rod end was necessary due to defective design.
The inner tie rod end broke,. Vehicle only has 60,000 miles on it. No noise or vibration heard.
Brought 99 durang. In for front end alig. Was told $ 1600 in repairs needed, guess what? yup, upperand lower ball joints, inner control rods and shocks, well the shocks seem fine but the rest is a mess, called dealer ira Dodge, and they said only recall was for a 2000 and up. I asked if it was nomal for all four ball joints to go at 64k(it could have been earlier I need new tires at the time inner wheel was wearing) he said no. . Oh well right, this is ridiculous. Checked part nums at local parts place(autozone) for all said above ,$259. That included new shocks, better ones too. Ill never buy a Dodge again. And ill never go to firestone tires.
I have a 2001 Dodge Durango that has prematue wearing of tie rods and bushings. I tried contacting my dealership and they will not cover this because of 60,000miles. I started noticeing problems at 7,000 miles when my tires started to wear premature. I took the car back to the dealer and they just realined the vehicle. I am on my third set of tires already. Brakes plus won't realign the car because everything is so worn out. Please advise me, I have to fix this and nobody will cover the costs. What do I do. ???.
Upper and lower ball joints, tie rod,and shocks replaced at 45,000 miles.
