3 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 11/21/2020

Our 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan gt suffered a torque converter failure at 63,095 miles while driving in gear at approximately 50 mph, creating a whining sound while moving until we were able to get the vehicle to a stop, and then shuddering and revving high without power while we moved it briefly to a safe location to park it for towing. The vehicle had to be towed to a dealer because the transmission was inoperative. Upon diagnosis, Dodge dealership confirmed torque convertor had failed and that the material from the transmission had to be disassembled and overhauled to remove the material from the transmission. We were very fortunate to have been traveling at a low speed and near a parking lot that we could pull of into and immediately stop the vehicle, as I had my wife and two children in the car. Dodge powertrain warranty extends to 60,000 miles and does not cover this repair under a warranty repair (3,095 miles out of warranty).

4 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 10/29/2020

The transmission of the Dodge Grand Caravan 2015. I checked the recall and the manufacturer only recalls the ones produced from 08/2015 to 2016. My car was produced in 02/0215 so it was not recalled. The transmission kept getting problem with the gear and shift. It also gave a code for p0740 tcc while it is just 80,000+ miles. I have been driving it for 4 months and the car heated up pretty bad with bad smell and shaking when speeding up. I took it to a shop and they said Dodge has problems with the transmission pump that feeds the torque converter, and also cause fail hydraulic pressure. This could be the reason for the damage of my torque converter. I don't know where and how I should report this to get it fixed because it makes no sense to me with w vehicle just turned 80,000 miles and has a failed transmission and causes shaking movement when speeding up which could be dangerous when I drive on a highway. Please contact the manufacturer to discuss for recall on these vehicles as well on transmission. They only do the ones produced after August, 2015 which does not cover enough vehicles. My car has that transmission problem (built on 02/2015). I also notice a lot of other 2015 Grand Caravans have the same problems with the transmission.

11 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 09/19/2018

Check engine light is not resetting due to p0740 code even after changing valve body and related solenoids on transmission. Van does not have any issues while driving. No gas mileage issues. Currently it is ~93k. Dealer is also not sure. He says need to overhaul the torque converter (cost $1100) then he will know if anything else is damaged. In that case he has to rebuild the transmission (cost $2800). 2nd option to put a remanufactured transmission (cost $3100). I have read online there is a ongoing issue with Dodge transmissions (2011 to 2014 models) which is not being recalled. Many a times changing transmission did not solve the issue. My personal mechanic also said he got this issue in many of the Dodge vans. Would request NHTSA to seriously consider this investigation.

14 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 10/20/2007

The check engine light came on and we had the vehicle checked. We were told that it was dealing with the transmission and to go to a transmission specialist. A day later, the tires were locked and the van did not respond to any gear. Had the van towed to transmission shop. They said that the torque converter failed and in turn the oil pump was not circulating oil to the transmission. The transmission was completely welded together. We had to purchase an entire new transmission costing over $2,600. 00. The vehicle had only 48,000 miles. I read online where other individuals had same problem at 37,000 miles and 40,000 miles.

15 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 10/07/2007

This issue occurs every time I drive the vehicle. It is a Chrysler financial lease vehicle, and current mileage is approximately 9,200 miles. The problem started occurring at approximately 250 miles. I am an engineer on automatic transmission systems. The purpose of this complaint is to provide NHTSA and the manufacturer with one more example of an issue that seems to be common with this particular transmission/vehicle. The Dodge dealer has not been contacted and the vehicle has not been serviced. Issue ? the vehicle exhibits an extremely harsh 2ã€1 downshift. It also exhibits a mildly harsh 1ã€2 upshift. I suspect solenoid and/or valve body debris is present causing delayed/harsh shifts. There is also a moderate amount of torque converter lock-up clutch slippage in third gear. The vehicle remains in third gear until approximately 40 mph. During third gear torque converter lock-up mode, engine speed fluctuations are visible on the tachometer. The engine speed changes are audible as well. I have been monitoring the automatic transmission fluid (atf) level and color. The level is correct and the fluid does not smell or appear burnt (fluid is red in color).

17 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 09/03/2004

Transmission would delay up-shift at approx. 25 and 40 mph. Acceleration is delayed for several seconds. Neither speed nor rpms will increase by pressing pedal. This creates a hazard while trying to merge in traffic. Vehicle had 42,000 miles. Transmission and torque converter replaced, new solenoid block and input/output sensors.

18 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 03/04/2004

The differential pin came loose making a hole through the transmission case. Transmission fluid leaked into the torque convertor area and then onto my garage floor. This vehicle has only 74,789 miles. The mechanic told me that this is very common with these transmissions. He said it occurs when one wheel spins while the other wheel is stopped. In other words, if you live in a climate with snow or ice, this failure can occur at any time to your vehicle. I have contacted the manufacturer and they tell me this is not a defect and that they do not know of any problems with their differential pins. I contacted the service manager at the local dealership, he said that he has certainly seen this problem before, but since it occured outside of warranty, I am on my own. The minivan has been repaired, but since the replacement differential is the same as before, a serious defect still exists in my vehicle. I have retained the worn/broken differential unit in case Dodge engineers want to inspect it.

19 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan

20 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 08/29/2002

The transmission on this van suddenly went out while I was driving over railroad tracks. Fortunately, I was able to get the van off the tracks before the train came by. The van was towed to the dealership who accused me of not properly maintaining the transmission. My husband takes care of the maintenance on this vehicle and followed the manufacturer's instructions. There was never any indication that there was a problem with the transmission prior to it's failure. The transmission shop has stated that the cooler on the transmission causes a backflow of fliud in the lines forcing the torque converter to drop metal shreds into the transmission. Their opinion is that the failure was caused by a Chrysler design flaw. Just from the little bit of research we have done on car point, it is very common for the transmissions in these vans to fail before they reach 50,000 miles. I was lucky that mine lasted until 60,000. I have had several problems with this minivan, including a dashboard melting over the airbag and a belt needing to be replaced 2x already and quite possibly a third now. Chrysler refuses to stans behind these vans because they are out of the mileage warranty and it's not right. There is an obvious and chronic problem with these minivan transmissions that needs to be fixed. Another mother may not be so lucky and get her van off the railroad tracks when the transmission. Dt fails. Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter. I look forward to hearing from you.

21 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 07/09/2001

1) when you would start the van it would not go into drive for @ 5 min. Then would finally go into gear. (2) when travelling @45 to 50 the van would start to shudder bad and would lose all of its power for a couple of seconds and then would be alright. (3) when stopping at a light/ stopsign or yield the van would not go. Told at the Chrysler dealership it was the transmission and torque converter.

22 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 05/09/2001

Have the transmission for verification, pictures.

24 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 12/11/2000

When starting vehicle in first 5 minutes vehicle would not shift into gear. Soon afterward vehicle would travel normal. The original transmission failed at 20,233 miles and the second one failed at 53,167 miles. The transmissions needed complete teardown, reseal and a new torque converter.

25 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 11/30/2000

When the vehicle comes to a stop the transmission jumps and then the vehicle dies. This only happens when the vehicle is in the first gear. Once the vehicle shifts out of first gear it does not have any problem with shifting. However when the vehicle begins to down shift when it comes to a complete stop as the transmission shifts to first gear it begins to jerk, hesitate and then the engine dies. This problem also exists in reverse, overdrive, third gear & low gear. The transmission was replaced by the dealer at 26000 miles. I serviced the transmission every 25000 miles thereafter. With only 58000 on the "new" transmission the torque converter and front pump have fallen apart. Is there anything on this vehicle that is not a piece of junk? other parts replaced are as follows: water pump, both front door seals, turn signal arm, drivers side visor, both front struts, both rear shocks, front brakes had to be rebuilt, a complete rear brake job (drums, wheel cylinders, spring kit & shoes),fan switch resister is going bad, antifreeze lines going to rear heater core, both oxygen sensors, both side door power lock mechanisms, spark plugs once by the dealer and most recently me, a complete fuel system power flush by the dealer, battery, fan relay switch(recall), and the van is currently on its third transmission, belt tensioner, passenger sun visor, serpentine belt, (,pcv & air) filters are replaced every year & the fuel filter every two years. The emergency brake has not worked for over two years. It is being replaced today. The dealer also recommended another flush of the fuel rails and to clean the throttle body assembly. Lest I forget the abs relay/solenoid.

26 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 01/14/2000

The automatic transmission shudders between 45-52 (most pronounced around 48) and did so when I drove the car off the lot new on 1/14/00. When I took the car to the dealer for service I was first told it was tire balance and that they fixed it. It didn't and I brought it back. The service man said it sounded like the torque converter. It was computer tested ok and their mechanic added some liquid to the transmission. I've driven it to FL and back to TN and the problem still exists. The other complaint/defect concerns rusted front end components. Upper and lower control arms left & right, torsion bar and other parts in that area are very rusty. I notice it when I changed oil. I went to another dealer and looked under those vans and found those parts also rusty also on new vans. It seems there is no coating or anodizing on these parts and they are rusting very rapidly. I also noticed rust on the main crank pulley of this new car.
