Documented several times since 2013, this van has had problems with the following: speedometer does not read, gauges do not read, windshield wipers turn on, all warning lights read, headlights do not work, a/c does not work; then all turn off randomly and intermittently turn back on and off again. In may 2014, the van had transmission issues where it would not shift out of low gear and driver had to twice shift into neutral and back into drive to shift properly. 6 repair attempts were made on the van beginning in may 2013 and ending in July 2013 with no success on repairs. The van was still under warranty so repair was free of charge. Replacement of the tipm was twice attempted but failed because of the faulty 2012 tipms. This van is used by rsvp, a federally funded nationwide non-profit, to transport senior volunteers to their work sites. This van has the potential to put people into a dangerous crash and needs Chrysler to repair the tipms immediately.

2013 Dodge caravan. Consumer writes in regards to transmission problems. A few days after the vehicle was purchased, the consumer heard a noise coming from the transmission, while driving in economy mode. Also, the engine was changing into a faster gear while trying to drive in normal gear. The consumer returned the vehicle to the dealer on 2 separate occasions. The mechanics stated there was nothing wrong. The vehicle continued to act abnormal, with the gears changing to a faster gear, when it wasn't initiated. When the consumer left the dealer and turned onto a busy street, the van appeared to leave driving gear, with the motor racing and would not move until the engine was turned off and back into drive gear again. The consumer returned to the repair shop again, only to be told his wife did not know how to drive. The consumer stated the transmission would slip out of gear, but no one could duplicate the problem. On 2 occasions, while the cruise control was set, the vehicle went to passing gear for no reason. It also happened when the vehicle was not set on cruise control. A year later, the problems continued. The vehicle accelerated on its own, the vehicle slowed down to 25 mph, the consumer had to push the accelerator to the floor, before it would change speed using the passing gear.
Upon start of vehicle, wipers turned on(switch pos off), washer fluid sprayed(button not pressed), horn sounded (not pressed), could not get it to stop. Started vehicle, continued to do all three, vehicle placed in drive, would not shift out of 1st gear. Shut vehicle off, started again, same things. In days prior to this incident, the vehicle would stall unexpectedly, fortunately while approaching stop sign, or stop light and not on highway, resulted in loss of power steering, and all engine/speed indication. Dodge dealership in valdosta duplicated problems, replaced $500 electrical box. Been two days since repair, no repeats yet.
I have had the 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan since 2007. This winter, when temperatures are around 33 and below, it slips out of drive in to a neutral state. The gear on the dash does not move so it appears to still be in drive. On several occasions while driving my children to school, it "goes neutral" while the vehicle is still moving. It slows down and I can brake but the acceleration will not work. Suddenly it will "pop" back into drive. This all happens with both of my hands on the steering wheel. It does this all on its own and it is very scary, especially with my kids in the car. The only thing that helps is to run the vehicle at least 10 minutes in cold weather prior to putting it in drive.

I am writing to Chrysler canada because we are very unhappy with our 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan, one that I would classify as a runaway vehicle creating a potential safety hazard. Current odometer reading 25347 this vehicle went for its first service February 9, 2009 to a vehicle check-up peace of mind inspection. Primarily with an inquiry to check the brake system since the brake pedal felt somewhat spongy when applied. The inspection indicated the brakes pulsated because of a warped disk. The warped disk is most likely caused by high heat generated from prolonged braking. This appears to be in contradiction with the instruction in the 2008 Dodge owner's manual page 334 under note: to select the proper gear position for maximum deceleration (engine breaking), simply press and hold the gear selector lever to the left (-). The transmission will shift to the range from which the vehicle can best be slowed down. This is clearly not providing the desired result. To assist the vehicle in maintaining control downhill, shifting the automatic transmission into 3rd gear (at 60 kph. ) should enable the vehicle to maintain control without having to ride the brakes. This is not the case; the electronics controlling the shifting system in the automatic transmission drops out of low gear (3rd) into high gear (d) under the slightest downhill momentum, thus making it impossible to control the speed of the vehicle. Page 337 in the 208 Dodge owners manual specifically warns that riding the brakes can lead to brake failure and possibly an accident. As we have experienced to our horror on numerous occasions driving on the west coast (vancouver island), while trying to maintain vehicle control on a downhill stretch of paved road, this 4 speed electronic transmission system is incapable of providing any engine braking assistance whatsoever. The only alternative is to ride the brakes to maintain vehicle control.
Twice in the last 6 years the transmission has had to be completely rebuilt in our 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan due to failure. The first time, in 2002, occurred as the transmission permanently slipped out of gear. The second time, March 2008, the transmission would down-shift into first gear - at any speed and at any time. More often than not the transmission would shift out of gear before down-shifting causing the engine to race high. The van is not used for anything but passenger travel nor is it used for towing.

I purchased a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan in August of 2005 with 73k miles. Vehicle smelled musty (stagnant water). Three trips to shop to diagnose and fix sway bar link, bushing, strut and strut mount problem to cure a clunking sound on front end. Transmission slips out of gear to neutral at whim. Also, shifts through first 3 gears (automatic) at whim causing vehicle to lurch. However, shop cannot duplicate these problems or the problem with my non working cruise control. At this point, I have spent a lot of money for non-diagnosis. The dealership charges everytime for not being able to find the problem. They say it is fine. I tell them that it is not fine that they just can't find it. I am disturbed by the number of posts to sway bar problems and transmission problems and the fact that no one is holding Chrysler/Dodge accountable. Will it take a number of deaths to determine that this is a real safety issue? I implore you to investigate these problems along with the water issue. So far it caused my blower resistor to short out and need replacing. I had no heat in below zero weather.

(1)driving along at normal highway speed when with no warning vehicle shifted into "limp" mode. Check engine light came on and would not shift out of 2nd gear. Vehicle has been maintained exactly as called for in service manual. (2)towed to repair shop and was informed that transmission needed to be replaced. Cost would be $2000 to $2500. Informed that the real problem was that there was a backlog on ordering a rebuilt transmission. Wait could be as long as 6 months. If this is not a serious problem, then why is there such a backlog in obtaining a replacement? also at the time of purchase I was aware of the problems Chrysler had in the past with caravan transmissions so I asked the salesman about the problem. Was informed that Chrysler had fixed the problem. Later found out that they didn't fix the problem as there are still as many problems as before they just reduced the warranty period so they wouldn't have to repair as many under warranty. (3)everything is still available as I can not afford to pay for repairs because I still have to make my payments.

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan. After purchasing the vehicle, it began to shift out of gear. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer over ten times, but they could not duplicate the failure. The issue occurred whenever there was an incline in the road. The contact expressed extreme concern for the defect and the manufacturer informed her that they would not repair the vehicle for free. The most recent failure occurred while driving 50 mph. The current mileage was 51,000 and failure mileage was less than 100. Updated 05/13/08
the transmission slipped out of gear, t went from drive to neutral. There was also a rattling noise when the vehicle was in reverse. It took several tries to get the vehicle out of reverse. The rattling noise was due to the sway bar being broken. Updated 05/13/08.

February, 2004 - 1998 Grand Caravan with 75100 miles started slipping out of gear while driving. No previous warning of problem. Total rebuild of transmission costing $1500. 00. Vehicle was well maintained and serviced regularly. Driven by "soccer" mom. Obvious through research this is a common problem with these vehicles.

I have experienced transmission problems with uneven shifting from the beginning of ownership of this Grand Caravan. The engine would rev up to a higher rpm than it should have before shifting into higher gear. Initially we were told that the car would adjust to the driver and thus accepted the explanation. There have been at least two different recent occurrences, when in gear, the car did not engage and seemed to be stuck in neutral. The third time, while moving and making a left-hand turn, the car slipped out of gear and into neutral, causing a very dangerous situation and put me in the path of incoming traffic. When I took it in for service, diagnostics indicated a transmission problem and thus needed to take transmission apart. Upon disassembly, it was determined that the gears had been ground off and not repairable and I was told this was no fault of anything I did. The remedy was a $3000 cost to put in a factory-rebuilt transmission. This could have caused a fatal accident except that the incident occurred late at night on a major road when traffic was low. This failure is not unique to this vehicle as other complaints against it have been reported to the NHTSA. This Grand Caravan transmission design flaw needs to be addressed by the manufacturer before fatalities occur. The car owners lives should not be put at risk, nor should they have to spend thousands of dollars fixing a problem which is clearly a manufacturer design flaw.
@37,000 miles the transmission failure light came on the dash board and the transmission went into safety mode keeping it from shifting out of first gear. The dealership replaced the module and the vehicle worked ok for another 2000 miles before it did the same thing. The dealership advised it was a different module however (therefore it wouldn't be covered under their repair warranty) the first repair cost $160. 00 and the second one was another $130. 00. The dealership was venice Dodge in venice, florida.
Reported and inquired to daimler Chrysler and awaiting response. When shifting from park to drive transmission will not engage. This first began about one year ago and was mentioned during regular services but nothing was determined. Problem is becoming more regular. Also experience an incident when entering a highway tranmission would not shift out of first gear. I increased speed to about 45 mph and tranmission still would not shift and rpm was beginning red line. After pulling over and stopping and turning off vehicle and restarting did vehicle operate normally. Dt.

The vehicle has been dropping out of gear from drive to neutral intermittantly since I bought it. This happens during driving and turning, but it is intermittant so Chrysler and Dodge service have not been able to duplicate, therefore will not fix the problem. The first times I called my own dealership in daphne, I was told they don't have a transmission person & to take it to mobile or pensacola to be repaired. I took it to mobile finally in Jan. '03, but they could not duplicate problem. They kept the vehicle for 2 weeks & left me with nothing to drive. They would not even give me a loaner. Next I approached my own dealership in daphne again & requested a meeting with the district manager. They insisted on checking it themselves before they would talk to the district manager, even though they didn't have a transmission person. They checked it and found nothing again, and faxed the information to star center. I still have not had the problem fixed nor heard a word from the district manager. All the service manager does it argue and smile with my complaints. Both service managers from mobiel and daphne state that Chrysler will not replace and cannot repair the transmission.

While driving on the highway, I noticed my van sounding like it wasn't shifting out of 1st or 2nd gear. I made a left turn as required to make an exit off the highway ensurining oncoming traffic was safely at a distance. As I made the turn, my transmission slipped out of gear and the car didn't go anywhere for a moment, and then finally slipped back in gear. I almost was hit by an oncoming car who probably didn't slow down assuming I'd finish my exit.
At 72,691 miles, the automatic transmission would not shift. The transmission was replaced with a rebuilt transmission. At 120,000 miles transmission slipped out of gear, causing the vehicle to slow down and not move.
Made a the purchase in Nov. With 37373 miles on the vehicle, major transmission failure at 46500 miles. The transmission will no longer shift out of low gear. Neither Chrysler or the dealer from which I purchased the vehicle will stand behind there product. These vehicles are known for having severe transmission problems and Chrysler claims they have fixed the issues so why is it that these vehicles continue to have these problems. A major recall for all these vehicles should be made as the consumers are continually being lied to and taken advantage of.
Automatic lock motor doesn't shut off right away when opened from keyless remote or during autolock when driving, struts are leaking oil at less than 50000 miles, windshield wipers lock up during cold weather, transmission slips out of gear during cold weather, front brakes vibrate and chatter: pads and rotors have been replaced twice in the last 6 months, grinding noise from steering column, whinning noise during accelleration. Are there any recalls regarding these issues. The car is falling apart after 4 years.
Automatic transmission has slipped out of gear at low speeds multiple times. Instances include slip out of gear at low speed after accelerating from stop. Also, instances where the transmission and engine would stall/shut down during low speed driving. During one instance, the van stallled and nearly caused an accident as the power systems failed. Only able to resume driving after vehicle has been turned off and allowed to sit for a few minutes.
After the vehicle was serviced for a recall the technician noticed transmission problems. The consumer also noticed that the vehicle made a popping noise and was slipping out of gear.
The vehicles transmission failed causing it to slip out of gear while driving and the ses light to illuminate. Nlm.
