The engine in the van stalled (simply shut off - did not sputter) while driving at a steady speed in traffic. Consequently the power assist for the steering and brakes failed. In that situation my physically challanged wife was completely unable to control the van. Thankfully the van rolled to a stop without hitting anyone or anything, or getting hit from behind. After putting the gear selector into "park" it restarted normally. This happened twice within 15 minutes during the same short trip home. There was no warning signs whatsover before this happened. (no check engine light, etc. ) an internet search of abundant identical Dodge Grand Caravan stalling issues indicates a very serious safety issue that the manufacturer is currently trying to evade - for far too many years, to the detriment of public safety.

We have a 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan. We are getting to the point that this van is not worth the stress. We did not get this van brand new however it didn't have many miles, if I remember right 62,000 on it. Less then a year ago we had to fix all four brakes and rotors (at 65,000 miles) . Last week when it went for inpecttion (at 73600 miles) it wouldn't pass because of the rotors, so once again we had to get them fixed. We are on day 7 and are already seeing the same problem and knowing we will have to have them fixed again! I can tell by how the van is squealing that we are going to have to replace the brakes and rotors again soon. We have already spent over $1500 in the same repairs in less then a year. I have looked up Dodge vans and I see a lot of people are having the same problem. Seriously I have a family and if these brakes and rotors fail I will not be happy. I don't understand how there is no recall after finding so many complaints on the internet about this van.

2009 Dodge Grand Caravan - dallas, TX while pulling out of a parking lot into the middle median to merge with traffic the vehicle lost all power. The engine died in the middle of the freeway and the steering and brakes failed to work. The vehicle has had this incident occur 3 times in 2014 each time resulting in the same outcome, engine dies, steering is lost due to no power steering and brakes fail. In each incident I was traveling at the speed limit and resulted in severe loss of control of the vehicle resulting in muscling the vehicle to the side of the road as it coast while quickly throwing the gears in neutral all at highway speeds. These incidents are not isolated to the more than 260 complaints over the last 11 years about general motors vehicles that suddenly turned off while being driven. This is clearly the same issue and will result in more deaths or sever injury if our regulators do not take action. Taking the vehicle to the dealer after each incident only resulted in the dealer finding no trouble codes and being unable to duplicate the problem releasing the vehicle back into my care to drive in its impaired condition. Chrysler was contacted on the 3rd loss of power incident and case# 25205303 was opened. . Read more...

Chrysler refuses to acknowledge a serious defect in the braking system of the Dodge Grand Caravans. I purchased a new 2012 Grand Caravan from a dealership. On July 31, 2013, quirk dealership in braintree, MA replaced rear rotors on the van at 17,000 miles because "rear rotors were very marked up and had rust rings. " on January 18, 2014, same dealership told me that rotors were pitted again at 27,000 miles and had to be replaced for $502. 00 (out of pocket). When I protested that mopar parts should not fail in less than 6 months, the service person told me that "dodges are known for these problems. " I contacted Chrysler customer assistance to see if they would cover their defective parts and have been given the total run around. Chrysler offered me $60. 00 off the price of the brake job but I declined because factory parts should not fail so quickly. I checked the internet (lemon law blog, car complaints, etc. ) and found hundreds if not thousands of complaints similar to mine for premature brake failure in 2006-2012 caravans & town and country's. Chrysler is aware of this problem and is trying to avoid responsibility for repairing this known defect by passing the cost on to american consumers. A recall should be ordered for these vehicles based on premature brake failure that Chrysler is deliberately ignoring.

The contact owns a 1993 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact stated that the brakes failed. The contact had to use both feet to apply pressure to the brake pedal in order for the vehicle to stop. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for inspection but the technicians were unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicle was not included in any recall. The failure mileage was 138,480.
I am on my 3rd set of brakes and they failed to function on 10/2/12 at 35mph. Chrysler refuses to replace the brakes at no charge since I am over 36000 even though the dealers are refusing to ship the pieces to outside companies and I cannot afford dealership prices.

The contact owns a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact stated that while driving 20 to 35 mph, the brakes failed without warning. As a result, the contact lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a truck head on. The front driver's air bag did not deploy. The contact suffered injuries to the neck and back during the crash. The manufacturer investigated the failure and concluded that the air bag did not deploy because the vehicle absorbed the impact of the crash. It was also determined that the air bag failure was not due to any known issues. The failure and the current mileages were 56,000. Updated 05/01/lj updated 06/14/2012.
2009 Dodge frand caravan rear brakes failure at 28,500 miles. . Went in for oil change at 24k was told brakes were getting low. At 28,5k I was told brakes were close to metal to metal. An extended waranty was issued for front brakes, I was told by Chrysler that 15k to 20k was normal wear and life expectancy for the rear brakes on this vehicle. I refused repair and vehicle is sitting in my yard not being used. I was told also by Chrysler that unless more info was sent to them supporting that the issue was not nornal wear Chrysler would be denying my claim and would not be offering any assistance on thos issue.
Around January 2011, I noticed a rubbing noise after being part of a funeral precession. The noise would come and go. There were also a little shaking like a pothole when nothing was there and I assumed it was the road but I couldn't see it. I was not comfortable with the noise and needed to travel so I took it a shop. On February 23rd I was told I had a low level brake pad and to return in 6 to 8 weeks. My front brakes were done at 40,000 miles and the rear were done October 2010. The vehicle was near 60,000 miles on this check-up. I was still not comfortable and was going to return in early March, when I got paid. I went to apply my brakes going to work. . . They didn't work correctly. . . I hit two cars (totaled my car and middle car). My brakes failed at over 60,000. My lower legs still hurt over 2 months after the airbags deployed.

Premature brake failure and required replacement at 22,000 miles on new 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan.
2008 Dodge Grand Caravan has a brake design flaw which causes the brakes to fail prematurely. The first set wore out before 25k miles and caused my wife to have an accident when she could not stop the vehicle. Brakes have been replaced again with less than 30k additional miles. This is too often for brakes.
The contact owns a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact stated that the brakes were prematurely wearing and malfunctioned without warning. In addition, the contact stated that the vehicle was taken into the dealer for NHTSA campaign numbers: 14v373000 (air bags, electrical system), 11v394000 (air bags , equipment) and 10v611000 (equipment); however, the parts needed were not available for repair. The manufacturer was made aware of failure. The vehicle was repaired; however, the brake failure persisted. The failure mileage was 120,000. The VIN was not available.
Brake system failure while driving. Nothing previously noted prior to failure. Brake pedal went all the way to floor, could not restore braking by pumping the brake peddle. Resorted to emergency brake and down shift. Stop achieved without accident. Unknown correction at this point.

Brakes fail completely every 20k miles, require full rotor / pad replacement. Obvious design flaw, if they fail that quickly then certainly something more dangerous could occur.
While applying the brake pedal it went the floor. The brakes failed to stop vehicle completely. However, driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to a garage for inspection. The mechanic could not duplicate the problem at this time.

Brake failure while applying brake at a low speed, vehicle would not stop. No sign of failure was given. Dealer notified, and was unable to duplicate problem. Feel free to provide any further details on this matter.
2002 Grand Caravan brakes failed. The consumer is seeking monetary compensation for the flawed braking system. The consumer stated he was never notified of the problem and only became aware of the problem after the damage had already occurred. The improperly designed backing plate allowed water and snow to enter the brake drum enclosure and when the temperature dropped to freezing the brake shoes froze to the drum. The situation most likely occurred when the emergency brake was applied.

Consumer states that rear-end felt as if dragging while driving. Dealer diagnosed that plate, which covers the brake system, is defective causing water to leak into the system, resulting in rusting. This condition causes complete brake failure.
