1 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 02/28/2016

While driving the van shuts off and looses all power to include power brakes and steering. Also the traction control light comes on. The following has been completed to fix the problem without the problem being resolved: replacement of battery and check of battery cables, recall complete of win module, replacement of O2 sensors and egr valve, and check of all fuses and wiring. After all of the aforementioned repairs the van still shuts off while driving. When the van shuts off the check engine light does not come on and there are no codes present for the mechanic to diagnose problem. This issue is an extreme safety issue and it appears there are numerous reports I have been able to locate on the internet. My wife will not drive the van not because of the problem. When the van shuts off you can place it in park and restart the van and continue to drive. The van has shut off on me while I have been driving it and there does not appear to be any indicator that it is going to shut down, ie stuttering or irregular operation. The speed that the issue has occurred ranges from 20 mph to 55 mph.

: the contact stated while driving 55 mph under normal road conditions, the vehicle suddenly accelerated to 95 mph. After being taken to the service dealer, it was determined that the cruise control cable bent, and caused the sudden acceleration. The consumer tried using the brakes with no success, the consumer finally turned the ignition off and was able to coast to the emergency lane. The consumer used the emergency brake to stop the vehicle and shifting the transmissions in to low. Updated 12/28/06.

While driving on I-95 consumer noticed the vehicle was going fast, she took foot off the accelerator and the vehicle didn't slow down, she then tapped the accelerator to try and slow the vehicle down this only made the vehicle accelerate faster. Consumer then got into the break down lane and put both feet on the brakes and the vehicle slowed to 65 mph. Consumer finally turned the ignition off to stop the vehicle. Consumer called concord state police to assist. The consumer had the vehicle towed, and the repair man stated that the throttle cable was frayed and got stuck in the housing, and couldn't come out of housing. The consumer actually still has the cable. Throttle cable replaced.

4 Speed Control Cable problem of the 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 07/22/2004

August 12, 2004 dangerous runaway-vehicle 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan VIN 1b4gp54lovb230366 this is to document a very dangerous situation that occurred on July 22, 2004 with the above vehicle. The minivan has been very well maintained and at the time of the incident had about 124,800 miles on it. My wife, naomi eckhaus, was driving the vehicle in a northwest direction on I-40 from wilmington to chapel hill . She was using the cruise control and is not clear exactly what the situation was prior to the incident although it is likely that she had accelerated to pass another vehicle. Suddenly the car was going over 90 mph and wouldnt stop although she used the brakes with all her force. She turned off the ignition and braked to a stop on the shoulder, with the brakes smoking and in flame. In trying to restart the car, the engine speed took off and she shut it down and called aaa for a tow. The aaa service station mechanic disconnected the cruise control cable from the throttle. The cable was stuck fast and had kept the throttle open. We were very fortunate that my wife had been able to control the van without colliding with another vehicle or running off the road before bringing it to a halt. The cable appeared to have a broken strand that stuck into the outer sheath. It is only about 20 inches long and makes a 180 degree u-turn between the cruise control vacuum servo and the throttle. That design places more stress on the cable than if it were a straight run. The defective cable is available for examination. I am an mit graduate mechanical engineer and former assistant director of technical operations for consumers union and I believe action should be taken by NHTSA to address this problem. Chrysler corporation and the local Dodge dealer did not offer me any remedy except repair at my own expense. Allan eckhaus.

5 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 05/23/2001

The gas pedal broke off from the accelerator cable while we going 65 mph and my son had to drive to safty by reaching down to the floorboard and pulling the cable while trying to steer the van, as we were in a construction zone and there was no where to pull over. This seems like a very unsafe problem.

6 Speed Control Cable problem of the 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 11/15/1998

While attempting to slow down, I released my foot from the gas pedal. The rpm's stay the same. I tapped the gas pedal, the rpm's increased. I place the transmission into neutral and steered to the shoulder. The rpm's continue to increase to almost full throttle. I shut the engine off. Vehicle was towed to corigliano Dodge service where a representative (joe mcdonald)made an immediate assessment that the throttle linkage cable was binding and defective. Mr. Mcdonald has indicated no troubles of this kind have been reported in the past, and no associated TSB's have been issued for mechanics to be aware of. My entire family was in the van when this happened. We're lucky to be alive. The part has been replaced and the van is currently operating normally. I want this reported to Chrysler. I want an official TSB established for mechanics to be aware of this problem. I want official confirmation from Chrysler that they will one, pay for the repair ($60. 16), two, launch a full investigation as to why this part failed, and three, offer me and my family some kind of conciliatory assurance that this will not happen again. Thank you, dan inzalaco.

7 Speed Control Cable problem of the 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 06/23/1998

While driving with cruise control, the minivan accelerates on its own to over 90 mph. The cruise control cannot be disengaged by applying the brakes nor by pressing cruise button or cancel. If put into neutral while driving, engine races to over 7000 rpm. The van must be shut off while driving and then the cruise/throttle can be manually disengaged under the hood. On 6/23/98, the cable-throttle control was replaced. The cruise failed again requiring replacement a second time on 10/03/00 at family auto center, muskegon, mi. Chrysler customer service was contacted to initiate an investigation and hopefully a safety recall. Instead, I was referred to NHTSA. Mr. Marc goss, service manager at family auto, is planning to address the safety issue with a Chrysler representative later this month. He is the only person that has shown any concern to this point.
