On June 1st, 2007, I, sharon s. Hatcher, went to tuffy auto service center to get my car inspected. They proceeded to inspect my vehicle when they hooked it up to the computer to pass onboard diagnostic ii [obd ii] language. . . My vehicle was rejected because the powertrain control module needs to be reprogrammed! well, I drove this car all day yesterday and last night and I took it to 2 other places and the same thing showed up like at tuffy auto service center!! I took it to steve white motors [Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep dealership] and their serviceman said to drive it around for 20-30 miles at a constant speed of 45-55mph. Well, I did that and I took at back to tuffy's auto service center and the same bullentin popped up again as like at the other places. So the complait that I am filing is on a 1996 Dodge Intrepid. I have been to 3 different places to get my car inspected and at all 3 places its showing the powertrain control module needs to be flashed or reprogrammed. The Dodge dealership is not wanting to fix this problem. I have the technical service bullentin [TSB] reference number as along with paperwork from these places. I believe this to be a new recall on my vehicle that hasn't been researched or looked into on all makes of Dodge Intrepid's during 1996. I am not paying for a recall that has to do with.

: the contact stated while driving 55mph on the highway under normal conditions, the engine revved up and down without warning. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined the power control module of the engine failed. The power control module was replaced along with the cam/crank shaft sensor. Afterwards, the check engine light illuminated without incident. The vehicle was taken to another dealership for further inspection, it was determined there was a failure of the power control module. The manufacturer was not alerted.

The car has only 65, 000 miles on it and the transmission has failed while no longer under warranty. While driving the engine light came on the rpm's revved and the car would not go over 35 miles an hour. Diagnostics equipment has said the modulators and electronic componenets for the transmission need to be replaced just short of rebuilding the transmission. The car has been serviced regularly and driven under normal conditions. I think this type of failure is unwarranted. I have been told by my mechanic that there is a trend in Dodge 2. 7 engines and transmissions.

Under normal driving conditions, automatic in "drive" position shifts into 3rd gear causing high [300-400k] rpm and high fuel consumption. Condition can be corrected by stopping vehicle, turning switch off, waiting until signal lights have disappeared, then turning switch on again. This is also a safety hazard due to potential for rear-end collision while vehicle is in off.
Both speed control modules and tcm have failed in the last 2 months; locking me into gear and causing engine to stall in intersections both times.

While driving on freeway near tracy, CA vehicle drove over smoothly part in freeway that slightly went upward then slightly downward causing vehicle springs or struts to lift up or hop far too much creating very poor vehicle traction, traffic then abruptly halted, had to brake hard to stop vehicle, vehicle had poor traction and just slid making a loud tire screeching noise, had to very quickly release the brake since vehicle was skidding, shifted into autostick and downshifted quickly in conjunction with quickly using brake get vehicle to stop properly. I am using stock goodyear tires with good tread, service center told me tires are ok, I am supposed to have abs (anti-lock brakes) so this does not happen. I beleive that the abs failed due to the springs or struts bouncing allowing the vehicle to lift up too much thus loosing traction causing abs to fail. I have not had any other problems with abs however brakes are starting to sometimes feel funny, almost a little rough when applied lately. I talked to independent mechanic that told me that my vehicle should not have skidded as it did and my springs could be responsible for the excessive uplift that occured. Vehicle does seem to hop or bounce a little much also at times causing the front wheels to loose traction or slide on slight turns. New springs or whatever with only 32,000? I have never had that happen in my old 1995 Dodge Intrepid although it had it's problems. This should not happen and is dangerous, I almost smashed into the traffic in front of me. Please advise. Thank you.
Service dealership claims wires were exposed as a result of some previous repair. This vehicle had no previous repair work except for a sensor which was replaced under warranty. Terefore, the malfunction had to result from factory workmanship or the dealer performing the warranty sensor replacement. Yet, I'm getting no assistance from Dodge in this power train control module replacement, which is costing in excess of $1,000. The vehicle is approximately 6,000 miles past warranty coverage. I would recommend that no one purchase a Dodge product because, obviously, Dodge will not stand behind their products.

Transmission intermittently bump shifts or slams into gear. When driving at around 40-50mph and flooring it to accelerate then letting off the accelerator pedal there is sometimes a bang or bump, sometimes harsh felt in the front end or transmission. This is sometimes so hard that passengers feel it and complain in regard to it. Bump is sometimes felt on deceleration in lower gears nearing a stop. Sometimes feels like it's shifting rough in lower gears. Gear selector feels stuck sometimes after parking and trying to shift into reverse. Transmission sometimes makes whining noise, not sure if this is normal. Transmission seems to hesitate sometimes before kicking down in low gear or upshifting. Took vehicle into dealership, shop foreman says there are no updated transmission control module (tcm) revisions after checking. Also states no fault codes were found from transmission. States that transmission issues could not be duplicated.
On 2 separate occasions vehicle experienced input and output sensor failure. The sensor controls and communicates with the rpms and transmission, per consumer. When this failure occurs vehicle immediately drops into second gear and accelerates from 30 - 60 mph, without accelerator pedal being depressed. The dealership and manufacturer are aware of the failure and are replacing sensor with a newer model.
I purchased my 1999 Dodge Intrepid w/28,840 miles. From there it had unreasonably been a lemon and into the "five star" Chrysler dealer at least 8 times. The vehicle had persistant steering issues and abnormalities, wandering, play, abnormal change in sensitivity while driving, noise, tire wear. Dealer could never "duplicate the problems'. The engine blew up at 33,000 miles, had to have replaced. Transmission failed shortly after, had to be rebuilt. Input/output speed sensors failed twice. Abs allowed brakes to lock up twice. Tcm and pcm needed updating due to flawed previous revisions. Power window failed, front bumper, grill paint wearing. Obviously this vehicle was a lemon. The vehicle was finally wrecked after sudden poor steering control after trying to get the dealer to do something many times. Daimlerchrysler denies any manufacturing responsibility. I do not see how they can get away with this. There are many others experiencing similar premature problems that should not be occuring as such. . Read more...
