6 Transmission Failure problem of the 1998 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 06/18/2006

: the contact stated the brake pedal was depressed while traveling at 50 mph and it went completely floor. The brake returned by a spring, but there was only around 2% of braking power. The automatic transmission was down shifted, but the transmission failed to move from the drive position, although the lever indicated an auto stick position. The accelerator pedal was released and the vehicle eventually slowed to a stop on its own. The vehicle was driven slowly to a brake repair shop where it was determined the brake line was corroded and ruptured. The brake line was replaced. The vehicle has not been inspected concerning the transmission problem. The manufacturer has not been alerted. The vehicle is being used in a salt belt state and there have been other corrosion issues, such as the master cylinder and brake rotors. Updated 07/05/06.

11 Transmission Failure problem of the 1998 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 12/19/2003

Within the last month our family has experienced two transmission failures in two different Chrysler vehicles we own. The first, a 1999 Chrysler sebring, had the transmission catastrophically fail after only 60,000 miles. The second, a 1998 Dodge Intrepid, had the clutches in the transmission fail after 79,000 miles. Both of these cars were extremely well cared for and driven normally. Both vehicles have been serviced according to the service manual supplied with the car. As a consumer, its hard to see how a company can charge $2,000. 00 to replace a part of a car that failed without reason. I will never buy a Chrysler product again.

14 Transmission Failure problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 04/30/2003

My automatic transmission failed at approximately 57,000 miles on my 2001 Intrepid r/t. I was at a stoplight and it was like I hit something. I could only move in 3rd gear at that point. I took my car to a transmission shop, and they proceeded with repairs. After removing and completely tearing down my transmission, I was offered two options. The first was a stock rebuild, just as it came from the manufacturer. It was the option I chose and cost me $1800 after taxes. The other option was replacing the same parts, but with updates that are recommended by daimler Chrysler. That option was $2200 before taxes. The interesting thing is that daimler Chrysler knows about the problems if they recommend the updates. The transmission shop knew of the problems because the option I chose carried a 6 month/6,000 mile warranty. The other (updated) option carried a 3yr/36,000 mile warranty. They know that those parts are most likely to fail again, hence the short 6 month warranty. I have a few of the parts saved from the repairs. One of the planetary gears is completely destroyed, in many pieces. The gears are worn severely. I can supply pictures of these if needed. I have been in contact with daimler Chrysler through their customer assistance website and have complete documentation of our discussions, word for word. They blamed it on everything except themselves. The representative even took a condescending tone towards me in his last reply. This is obviously a problem they are aware of, other customers are having, and will continue to be a problem as long as they use the 42 le transmission.

17 Transmission Failure problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 10/18/2001

At time of transmission failure problem became serious and became obvious on 10/18/01. After transmission started failing I stopped at the traffic signal ahead. After stopping and letting go of the steering wheel the steering wheel completely limped to the left with very limited control when I attempted to turn it. I have had problems with flimsly/loose steering that moves to freely but the vehicle was even move difficult to control and the steering felt really strange. I limped it back to the dealership. They stated that they could not duplicate the steering problem and a tech said that it drove normal but they found a bolt or washer missing from the left lower suspension control arm and will replace. They are currently ordering the part and I am without my vehicle at this time.
