Driving on 2 lane highway and had to brake hard as another vehicle cut me off. As soon as I did (brake) my SUV shut off. . . All the lights flashed on the dash board. I immediately put the flashers on and hoped I didn't get rear-ended. I tried 3x to restart my 2011 Dodge Nitro- it finally started. I was near the dealership where I purchased the vehicle, I pulled in, told them what just happened. They hooked it up to the computer and reported 'no errors'. It was a near miss on a busy highway, and I am worried if this were to happen again. I don't feel safe in my Dodge Nitro. I was alone, but what if I had passengers, children, etc. ? it is definitely a safety issue when you brake hard and your vehicle just shuts off, wouldn't move. This is incredible scary. Someone or more than one person is going to be killed when they get slammed from behind and pushed into on coming traffic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

When driving, over the past year, the engine shuts off and the steering wheel locks. I have been in an area that I can stop and restart but the steering is locked up so I can't move the vehicle. I am very scared that it will do it while on the freeway and I will be hit at high speed on the freeway.
Randomly the car shuts off while driving! almost died!!! also horn will honk continuously and wipes turn on randomly. Car seems posessed. Scary and unsafe, 50,000 miles on it. Issue has occurred several times. If I hit the tipm with my hand the car returns to normal until the next episode.

While driving in the area about 30 mph the engine just shut off and had to fight to keep the car straight to come to a stop.
In July 2013 my husband and I was on the freeway going about 70 the Nitro shut off and dash lights came on. He was able to make it to the shoulder. The car started right up. We took it to the dealer and nothing was found. No problem shutting off again until November 9, 2013. I was driving on the freeway with my children about 65 and it shut off. Once again I was able to make it to the shoulder. Took it back to the Dodge dealer this time they kept the car for about a week. The service guy informed us that they haven't found anything wrong and they were in contact with Chrysler about the problem and as soon as they find the problem they would contact us. After a week the service guy called and said they have been working with Chrysler and haven't been able to figure it out. He stated "that Chrysler wants the coils replaced but not sure if that would solve the problem that they haven't found. " the repair wasn't covered by the warranty so we paid the $400. So far so good but it was 4 months from the initial shut off before it happened again. Keeping my fingers crossed!!!.
On April 23, 2013 I took off from a red light at the top of a hill. As I coasted down the hill at approximately 25mph, my car's engine shut off. I was not able to use the brakes or fully turn the steering wheel. I was able to force the steering wheel slightly, enough to turn the car into a side street and yard of a home and come to a complete stop. I attempted to restart the vehicle by turning the key in the ignition. The car would not start. I removed the key from the ignition and put it back in an the car would still not start. I opened the door to completely shut down the electrical components that were still working (radio, lights, etc) and was able to restart the car successfully. I was able to drive the rest of the way home without incident. On may 13, 2013 as I was leaving work, my car would not stay running. When I put the key in the ignition, the car would start and shut off after about 7 or 8 seconds while the electrical components (lights, radio, etc) stayed running. This occurred three times. On the fourth try, the car would not start at all. I disconnected the battery and reconnected the battery and attempted to restart the car. On the second try, the car was able to start and stay running.
I bought my Dodge Nitro back in Jan of 09, every since I've been bringing it back for a loud engine which knocks when going up hill, wind noise seems to be leaking into passenger front cabin, (driven other vehicles of same model, little or no noise) sales at riverside Dodge in California was a dragging horror, they held my keys hostage until they could make a deal, I've taken it back and had a service person tell me my vehicle is front wheel drive and that's why I hear noise when I turn, I've been told that my computer has to catch up with the engine when I stop quickly that's why my vehicle shuts off on me when I brake quickly, rattles come from the passenger side front fender like there's a loose panel, brakes squeal from time to time, it shifts up into a higher gear instead of down when climbing a hill have to floor it to get it to shift down and climb hill, that's just to get it up to 35. Its a daily non-stop battle with this vehicle and dealership. If there's any help out there please contact me.

On may 11, 2007, the dealer stated that a wire was loose and made the repair. The dealer's computer also indicated that there was a power shut down. The dealer stated that they may be unable to diagnose the cause of failure if the second failure cannot be duplicated. The alabama lemon law applies if three failures occur for the same incident.
