Dodge RAM owners have reported 34 problems related to steering wheel (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
While driving down the highway pulling our gooseneck trailer I hit a bump on the highway. Once I hit the bump the truck began to shake uncontrollably and the steering wheel was ripped from my hands. I could not hold on to the steering wheel. Depressing the brake pedal only made the truck jerk to one side very quickly. All I could do was down shift the transmission and use the trailer brakes lightly to slow down. I had no steering control at all. While slowing down I ran 3 cars off the road on to the shoulder due to not being able to steer the truck at all. I could have easily killed myself and anyone else on the highway at that time. The truck is currently at stanley-lynd autoplex in cameron texas undergoing "repairs". The service manager, mechanic and the dealership owner all stated and agreed that there is no known cause and no known repair to keep this from happening again. This is a very serious life and safety hazard. The truck continued to do this "death wobble" as it was named at the dealership at anytime the truck encountered a bump, expansion joint or un even pavement.

At 58,000 miles, the steering column in my Dodge Ram 1500 pick up needs to be replaced. There is a noise when the wheel is turned in either direction. I was told by the dealer that the entire steering column needs to be replaced. I wrote a letter to Chrysler about the problem because my extended service contract does not cover the steering column. The letter was written on April 5th of this year and I just called Chrysler to inquire about an answer and was told my request for "good faith" assistance has been denied. I do not use this vehicle for commercial or off road driving and do not feel the steering column should fail with only 58,000 miles of normal driving. The manufacturer wants nothing to do with the repair other than take my $400-$500 for the repair. I have searched your database and have found no other issues similar to mine with the year and model of my truck. I am also receiving no assistance from the dealer. According to the service manager at the dealer this is not a safety issue and I do not need to worry about any failure.

The truck's steering locks up while turning and then the ignition will completely shut down. The ignition has even stopped when driving straight and not turning. This is a definate road hazard and Chrysler says there is nothing wrong with it. We have had the truck in 3 times before it was finally involved in an accident due to this problem. They can not find anything wrong yet each time they have looked at it and we get it back it happens again. It doesn't happen every time you turn but you never know when it is going to do it. I don't want to be responsible for injuring anyone because of a defective product. We are also unable to find a previous owner. The names on the title have been cleared. How can this be?? do you have any suggestions as to what we can do? how do we get this problem resolved? someone is hiding something about this truck. We do not want to be responsible for killing ourselves or anyone else on the road. Thank you for your time and I hope you can help. Sincerely, shirley goode.
We contacted you on June 21, 2000. Sent back the form you sent us. Refer to TSB 19-03-99. We have been to national center for dispute settlement and they claim this is a characteristic of the Dodge. TSB 19-03-99 tells them how to fix it and it still has not been fixed. The indepentant vehicle inspection report states:"the steering will not return to center after an in town ninety (90) degree turn. Findings: during the test drive the vehicle consistently would not return to the neutral (center) steering position. Usually the steering wheel had to be turned by hand the last seventy (70) to eighty (80) degrees back mto the center the two(2) sample Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 diesel units I drove returned closer to the center than george duffy's did. The test/sample vehicles returned to the center within ten (10) to fifteen (15) degrees of center. Could the condition be verified? (please circle one) yes or no. 'yes', was circled. If 'yes' is circled, (please circle one) normal or abnormal [abnormal] is circled. If you wish, we will be glad to send copies of all papers and correspondance that we have. We feel, and so did the independant vehicle inspector, that his situation is dangerous! when I told him of not being able to keep the truck on the road ( on CA "89") in hat creek country, and running into the shoulder. I was fortunate that the shoulder was dry. He (vehicle incpector) said "you would not be here to tell the story if had not been dry!".
Since my truck was new there has been play/loosness in the steering, causing the steering to be jerky at highway speeds. Sometimes, the steering wheel can be jerked from my hand. Taken to Dodge and seen by the Chrysler representative, and I was told it was normal.

I have not had an accident as a result of this yet. The steering wheel makes alot of noise when you turn it either direction. Had Dodge check it out. They said that they have replaced alot of steering columns because of this, but not sure what causes it. Said that most have this problem with lower mileage. Warranty cover the steering column. Seems my warranty is up, they tell me to try and get use to the noise. Said that the noise will get 5 times worse, but didn't think it was a safety issue. It they don't really know what causes it, how can they be sure it isn't a safety issue. If this is a recurring problem, then it is obviously a factory defect.
