7 Tire problem of the 1999 Dodge RAM

Failure Date: 06/14/2002

On 14jun02 I replaced the original equipment tires with new ones. At that time I was informed that there was something wrong with my van. I was shown where the original equipment rotor ,on the left front tire, was too large a diameter for the wheels. The tire had to be forced off and on. Since I had the tires rotated both wheels were now warped. In forcing the t he wheels onto the rotor, the lugs appeared to be damaged. They also told me that an inordinate amount of weights had to be used to try to balance the wheels. I believe that this can be a problem and since this is all original equipment, I believe Dodge should take responsibility. I contacted Dodge and was told that this was my problem. I don't know what other defects may be associated with this defect. Thanks for all the help you can provide.

Failure Date: 02/08/2001

Front right tire separated at 65mph almost causing a major accident and possible death. Dealer was notified at 2,410 mileage about front end vibration/shimmy. No cause found. Vibration in front end reported numerous times to dealer without problem being found since it continued. Was told "normal ride" for truck. Truck experienced numerous problems with front end suspension, rattles in dash from vibration, steering column excessive play etc, etc, etc. Remaining tires show signs of bluging and cracking. Tire was defective from begining in my opinion and put me at risk! dealer rebalanced/rotated tires many times and simply concluded the vibration/shimmy was normal for truck and stated I might have a better ride when loaded. (dot number: load e tiresize: lt24575r16).

15 Tire problem of the 1998 Dodge RAM

Failure Date: 10/30/2000

Tire size is lt265/75r-16/c. The tire failed while returning from omaha with my wife and 8 month old son. I have digital pictures of the tire and truck that can be sent over e-mail. I have contacted pirelli and they want me to send the tire along with estimates to fix the truck. I spoke with nadine calderwood at 1-800-243-5105 ext 387. She did not seem to care if anyone was injured or not and seemed to be exactly like her title a risk manager. The tires have aprox 20,000 miles on them. I was driving 75 mph and the truck had a slight vibration I checked tire pressure when we stopped and visually inspected the tires. After we filled with gas the vibration was no longer there. After our second stop the vibration returned and then the tread separated with a violent crash destroying the entire side of the truck and causing the truck to almost loose control and shake violently. I understand that a large tire CO like pirelli has to watch out for their best interest however they should put the customers well being at the top. I would appreciate any information you have about other pirelli tire separations that have been filed. Thank you. (dot number: chw8gp4419 tiresize: 265 75r16c).

16 Tire problem of the 1999 Dodge RAM

Failure Date: 10/16/2000

This was brought to my attention by another owner of the same vehicle. I was advised that my front tires were bald. I checked them and found they were ok. I had already replaced two of them in less than two years. Turns out the person advising me had also done so and there was still another person (we all belong to the same church and drive the same vehicle) experiencing the same problem. The front tires are wearing excessively and the dealership is aware of the situation but has elected to do nothing about it. The wrong tires are being sold with this vehicle. I was told they finally got the dealership to agree to the fact that they were the wrong tires and they replaced them with truck tires because the van is on a truck chasis. I'm on my second set and have fewer than 25,000 miles on my van! (tiresize: p235/75r15).

27 Tire problem of the 2000 Dodge RAM

I installed tire chains on my vehicle as permitted in the owners manual. A link on the chain broke because it was rubbing against the leaf springs of the vehicle. The space between the inside of the tire and the outside edge of the leaf springs is approximately 1 inch. This is insufficient to safely run chains on the vehicle. When the chains failed - if they had wrapped around the axle it very likely could have caused the vehicle to become uncontrollable. The manufacturer has referred me to the selling dealer. The selling dealer said they cannot get any guidance from the manufacturer. The selling dealer offered that I use cable chains instead. I bought a set of these and they, too, don't fit without rubbing the leaf springs. The dealer also said that they would honor the warranty if I purchased wheels with more offset (move the centerline of the wheel outboard of the vehicle) but they cannot offer a recommendation from Dodge for an amount of offset. Followups to Dodge have proven fruitless. I am running factory original tires and chains that are sized to fit those tires.

28 Tire problem of the 2001 Dodge RAM

Consumer after being informed about tire recall 01v28900o had taken vehicle to dealer. Manager insisted vehicle was not within recall notice. However, service manager at michelin stated that all the d rated tires on consumer's Dodge, Ram were low rated, and could only hold a certain weight age that did not match vehicle compliance expectation.

29 Tire problem of the 1999 Dodge RAM

We currently have 16,637 mile on our 1999 Dodge Ram van. In recent weeks we notice that the front and rear tires were worn down to the radial bar. In addition, there are several air bumps forming on all four tires. Withe recent firestone and Ford problems, I took the van to merchants tire and auto where I normally do business. They informed me that the tires were shot, are a saftey concern and should be replaced. I then took the van to tire warehouse to get a second opion on the tires. Again, I was told that the tires were in very bad condition and should be replaced as soon as possible. I called the goodyear 800 number to request my rights and in what direction I should go, but I was only given the run-around and switched brom operator to operator. My concern with this tire is that on the side of the tire it states that it has a max weight of 2,293 pounds. Given that the van is a half ton, and has added after market conversion package, it is possible that the weight exceeds the limit. I asked Dodge about this concern, since they sell the conversion van, and I was told that it is possible that the tires do not meet the current weight of the total van package. My question is, are there other reported incedents with this tire and vans, or with this tire in genereal. Also, do I have a legal recourse against either Dodge or goodyear to pursue in order to get my tires replaced before an accident . I use the van as my primary source of transportation and I transport my teenage kids and sometimes their friends, on a daily basis. Thank you for any cooperation in this matter. (dot number: 265928 tiresize: p235/75r15).

30 Tire problem of the 1996 Dodge RAM

I carry a heavy camper, although in spec for the tires, about 25% of the time. Two tires failed by tread separation at about 13000 miles, no more than 5000 miles loaded. I paid for replacements. There was lots of tread left. Two more had failed by about 25000 miles, with about 5000 miles of loaded operation. These miles were at greatly reduced speed because of fear of failure. Again I replaced the tires, they were not given to me. Goodyear says the truck is at fault, Dodge says the tires are bad. No one laughed out loud. In all cases the tires had lots of tread left and the failure was delamination around the tread area. The tires did not lose air and therefore no accident vehicle damage resulted. I went thru the customer arbitration board at Dodge, claiming they selected inappropriate tires, to no avail. A concensus of tire people was that the engine had too much torque for the tires even though no overloaded. I became concerned that, since no assurances were given that the problem would not recur, the next failure might produce a accident. I threw away 4 virtually new tires and replaced them with cooper tires at my own expense. Good tire wear and no problems have been encountered with the cooper tires in almost 20000 miles. I would be happy to provide more information if requested. (tiresize: lt24575r16)( dot number: tire size: lt24575r16 ).
