2 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2010 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 11/06/2014

On 11-8-14, I took a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 truck in for engine repairs. The mechanic noted both front lower ball joints needed replaced. A search for the needed parts revealed no replacement parts available for at least 30 to 60 days. Four weeks later on 12-5-14, a fluid leak was noted from the front end. It was found that the right front axle seal needed replaced immediately, due to a heavy leak. The normal repair would involve replacing the lower front ball joint to enter the axle to get to the seal. This could not be done since no lower front ball joints could be found to complete the repair. The mechanic accessed the axle seal by going thru the top of the axle. The seal will again have to be replaced when lower ball joints become available, at a cost of an additional $150. This situation presents a risk to the driver and motoring public, since the necessary parts can not be sourced. It creates a risk that the lubricating fluid inside the axle will leak out, which could result in the axle "tying up," causing the driver to loose control and crash. Chrysler will not, or can not make the necessary parts available to its dealers or independant mechanics. There are also no "after-market" parts on the market that could be used to safely complete repairs.

3 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 11/01/2013

Upper and lower ball joints on front suspension have deteriorated to the point that they must be replaced for concerns of safety. This is very low mileage for ball joints to fail. And since my 2wd truck has unitized ball joints (part of upper control arm, which also has to be replaced), they are very expensive.

8 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2003 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 02/15/2007

On Friday the 9th of February 2007 I noticed a loud scrubbing sound when I moved my steering wheel any. A week prior we had noticed a little squeak coming from under the front end so when I heard the scrubbing noise also I called the local Dodge service center. On Thursday Feb. 15th 2007 I took it in to see what the problem was thinking maybe power steering pump or something simple. Lower ball joint boots busted at 61k on my 2003 Ram 1500 4x4 qc. Lower and upper ball joints and assemblies need to be replaced. My truck is in pristine condition otherwise, this came as quite a shock and we are afraid to drive it. Price to fix? $1,600. 00. I was told this is the same problem the Dodge durango and Jeep liberty have been recalled for and that quite a few Ram 1500's are coming in to dealers, so much so that the parts to fix this are on back order. I now know this is the reason we have experienced some uneven tire wear in the last 2 months. This is a very dangerous situation as once it fails the front end will fall apart. I would like to document this in the proper place so that restitution can possibly be made to us consumers in the near future. Automobile companies should not be allowed to manufacture and sell ball joints as "sealed" there is no way to maintain them and once the boots bust the ball joints fail - disastrous consequences incur.

When getting the front end aligned the ball joints were checked and failed inspection and had to be replaced. When I returned to the dealer for reimbursement they said that, the part was not recalled on the Dodge ram, however was recalled on the Dodge durango and Dodge dakota. Being rather rude about it, I was told since I didn't get the ball joints replaced at a qualified Chrysler dealer they would not reimburse me. I had 36,800 miles on the ram so it wasn't a question of warranty but one of safety, that had to be performed whether it was a Dodge garage or not and I think I should be reimbursed for these parts and labor.

Popping sound heard coming from driver side front wheel area. I asked the dealer to inspect the vehicle while performing normal maintenance. The service department informed me that both left and right side top and bottom ball joints had failed and that I should immediately have them replaced. The 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 has less than 70000 miles. It has not been driven off road. It primarily has been driven to school and home approximately 6 miles round trip untill 2 years ago. The mileage that is on the vehicle is either in town or interstate. The vehicle has been serviced every 3,000 miles and has had periodic maintenace performed in accordance with the manual. I don't understand unless the parts were defective when the vehicle was purchased new. Seems there is other failures of this type affecting durangos and dakotas.

23 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 1998 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 03/08/2004

Premature lower ball joint failure in Dodge Ram 1500 . Truck has had unusual tire wear since 44k miles and dealer as well as tire shops found no explanation. Wheel bearings and tie rod ends were previously replaced at 68k miles by myself, with right side tie rod severely worn. I assumed the tie rod was the tire wear problem and did not have problems aligning front end until this February. Shortly thereafter, clunk in steering was evident, and handling became erratic. I carefully inspected front end and discovered right side lower ball joint worn to point where it was about to separate from socket. Left side joint is significantly worn as well. Looking back, the ball joints were wearing out at the 44k mile point. Vehicle is driven mainly on highway and in 30 years of driving and 9 vehicles this is the first one to have a ball joint failure in this manner after only 5 years of service. Research on my part has indicated that numerous Dodge truck owners have this problem, onsetting in as little as 20k miles causing the same symptoms as my truck, and if I wasn't so meticulous in performing vehicle maintenance on my own this may well have resulted in a serious accident.

This defect could have caused a very serious if not fatal accident if it would not have been found.
