Nine problems related to automatic transmission gear indicator have been reported for the 1998 Ford Contour. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Constant problems with the vehicle. Alternator, fuel tank, gear shift indicator, computer sensor's (variable cam timing over retarded), automatic shift labored and fails, cooling fan motor, etc. This vehicle is in some form of repair shop on a regular basis. Have I driven a Ford lately? yes, and sorry I chose to do so.
Gear selector lever replaced. Nlm.
The consumer has received a recall letter for shift lever damage. Since the consumer received the letter, the parts have been unavailable. The manufacturer has yet to be contacted.
The consumer received a recall letter for automatic transmission shift lever indicator, recall number 98s26. After a delay in obtaining parts, the recall repairs were performed, no problem since.
Consumer received mfr. Recall notice #98 s 26 / Ford: shift level damage which the gear position indicator can deteriorate and not correctly indicate the actual gear position.
Shift light indicator failed prior to notice, not able to be repaired due to lack of parts.
Unable to have recall done due to lack of parts. (98v-233).
Consumer received recall notice #98v233000 for the shift lever, but the dealer doesn't have the parts to fix the vehicle.
Consumer received recall letter. Contacted the dealer, no parts available to remedy the problem. Recall number 98v233000. Please give any further details.
