Defogger Controls Problems of Ford Contour

The contact owns a 1996 Ford Contour. The heater fan motor for the defroster failed. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that the fan switch failed and would cost $58 to repair. The dealer kept changing the diagnosis until the contact spent $271; however, the vehicle was still not repaired. Nhtsa campaign id number 01i009000 (visibility:defroster/defogger system: windshield: controls/wiring) was referenced. The dealer stated that the vehicle passed the ten year free period. The current mileage was 131,000 and failure mileage was 130,000.

The contact owns a 1997 Ford Contour. The contact stated that the defroster stopped working. The vehicle was serviced for NHTSA recall # 01i009000 (visibility:defroster/defogger system:windshield:controls/wiring) in 2001. The instrument panel and tail lights also do not work. The vehicle was serviced for NHTSA recall # 99v103000 (exterior lighting:headlights:switch) in 1999. The current mileage is 92,794 and failure mileage was 90,000. Updated 02-01-08 updated 02/01/08.

During replacement of heater blower switch consumer noticed that electrical wires were melted together and charred black. Dealership has not examined vehicle. Please provide any additional information/attachments.

Consumer stated the heater core is inoperative, will not blow out heat, took vehicle to dealer, and repaired it, but problem still exists. Third time that problem has occurred, the problem is with the heater / air conditioner blower switch only operates on high speed. * jg.

Heater control switch will not work on normal setting but will only work if you put it on high and that is resulting in the loss of power or decreasing power in the alternator.

Heater fan control switch began smoking and shutdown while vehicle was in operation. Consumer has taken vehicle to private mechanic, who indicated that defect resulted from factory wiring harness being too small a guage of wiring to carry electrical load. Replacement wiring harness was of a higher guage. Please provide any additional information/attachments.

Fan blower switch only operates on high speed.

Said car had defects almost as soon as we purchased it, we noticed it had 2 different emblams on the fenders and they had to run the VIN# so they could find out which it was. The car started leaking within 6 months of purchase, they worked on it 3 times to no prevail(still leaks) the dash has bowed up at the windshield and at the panel behind the steering wheel, instrument panel has smoked up, heater switch only works on high setting, pass. Side front window fell out of door track while going down the highway, speaker busted, carpet ruined because of leaks. Blancetts had all of these parts ordered for over 6 months and they still did not get all of them in, an d Ford motor company has closed them down. I don't know the specifics of the reasons for closing them, but they had trouble once or twice with getting cars and trucks with mileage rollback problems.

Heater switch recall - Ford is unwilling to replace a faulty switch that was recalled under thier program m - the recall letter was not sent out to me. I purchased the car new in columbus OH. The recall switch can cause potntial fires and is currently bad in my car. I spoke with Ford and to a manager, who was very rud to me over the phone and offered no help. She stated that the car was not covered under their program m recall because it was not made in the same factory as the other cars covered by the progem m . But I am experiencing the same problems that cause fires. Ford is unhelpful and unwilling to fix a known defective part on my car. If I had been notified under this program back in 1999 when the letter was sent out then the switch would have been replaced, since it has been defective for over one year. I have had car in shop 4 different times,they changed to rotors and brakes the first time at 3,000 miles. They claim the rotors were warped from the factory. The next 2 times they claim the car is fine,the last time ( car is still in the shop since 2/15/00 this is written to you 3-09-00) they are replacing the front rotors and brakes again, they say they are replacing the defrost switch and a wiring harness,the engine drivetrain they don't know???. I have lost time at work and I don't fell safe in the car. I refuse to take my "family" anywhere in this car!!!!!.

Our car has had problems since day one we have 2 different emblams on the fenders, window fell out, speakers busted, carpet ruined by leaks, fan switch only works on high setting, instrument panel smoked up as if burning, hood doesn't meet up with cowl, trunk stays soaked, and there are numerous other problems all happened within six months of original purchase.

Consumer has had numerous problems with the 1996 Ford Contour. There has been so many recalls on consumer's vehicle that she wasn't aware of because the manufacturer never sent notices. Since then consumer has been paying for entire full price and is asking for reimbursement. However, the biggest problem with the vehicle is the gas fumes which is leaking therefore leaving poisonous carbon monoxide fumes coming in through the heater vents. These harsh chemicals are damaging to the lungs, brain, respiratory system and its making consumer very tired among other symptoms.

My ac/heater switch has gone out twice. Theres seems to be a short in which the plastic is melted behind the switch, where the switch cannot be turned.

While driving at 35 mph smelled smoke, and heater switch caught on fire and burned.

Burned wires and melted connector at blower motor switch resistor, blower motor switch will not operate at second highest setting.

The fan motor switch failed to work. Would flicker but not on. Been to dealer & brought parts for fan motor. Dashboard pulled down & noticed the wires to fan motor had burnt out. Had replaced them.

Control switch for heater and air conditioner malfunctioned, cause unknown. Please give any further details.

Consumer experienced a power surge that shorted out the switch to the heater fan. Dealer has been contacted.

Rear defrost button failed.

Problems with 1996 Ford Contour front brakes, transmission, fuse box, heater blower motor, electrical and steering and suspension. For the second time, the vehicle had problems with the brakes making a loud rubbing sound, the stabilizer bar was replaced and needs to be replaced again. The transmission was leaking, water was inside of the headlight seals, which made the lights very dim, the selector mode switch on the heater motor blower did not work properly, which made the heat not work at a 100%. The upper ball joints, rack and pinion and wheel bearing were all defective.

The heater blower switch failed prior to recall notice . Nlm.

While driving with air conditioner on high, smoke started coming from the vents. When turning off the a/c, there was melting behind the switch for the blower.
