Transmission Failure Problems of Ford Contour

1998 Ford Contour se 4cyl VIN [xxx] - 4speed transmission. My wife was driving home from work when the transmission made sudden, erratic, jerky shifts on its own causing the car to pull from side to side and losing control and leaving the road and finally stopping in a field. I had to tow her out. The car now does not move forward, but does has reverse. Further research on the net has revealed other Ford/Mazda owners have experienced the same transmission failures. The vehicle experienced premature transmission failure.

Transmission has failed repeatedly even after complete rebuild. Have also had tread separation in tires on 5 separate occasions.

When consumer steered to the left vehicle pulled more than intended. Dealer inspected the vehicle & found nothing wrong. The steering problem is caused by bad front end alignment. The transmission failed. Broken motor mount was found. The heater failed too.

Transmission failed three times within four months. May 1st, June 26th and August 17th/2000. Each time transmission has been rebuilt.

Have had numerous problems: interior/brake lights failed to light. Replaced switch twice. Fuel filler door will not open with latch inside. Never worked. Cigarette lighter failed. Power window on driver's side has failed. Car intermittently will not start due to drained battery. Mechanic could find no cause for this related to alternator/charging system of car. Never able to fix this. Trunk leaks water around seal. Abs light keeps coming on . Mechanic could find no problem with abs. Air conditioner/heater would only blow out defrost setting. Also bad smell comes from ac when on. Rear seat belts keep jamming; not able to use sometimes because they won't come out. Worst problem so far: transmission has failed. Not yet fixed. I loved this car once, now I hate it! the whole thing should be recalled.

There was no notification of recall concerning transmission failure.

Twice the transmission failed on the freeway and had to be completely replaced even though the car was 1 and 3 months old. The dealer was extremely rude and I promise I will never purchase another Ford again and neither will anybody that has heard my story.

Consumer states transmission failed without no warning that anything was wrong, and that manufacturer should be responsible for the expenses that consumer incurred due to the fact that vehicle had only 37,000 miles and is only two years old.

I was in transit to replace my braking system for the second time in 6 months when my transmission failed. My 'check engine' light stays on and the car now stalls when in a stopped position at a traffic light. These issues, amongst a list of other major failures has occurred in the last 2. 5 years of ownership of this lemon ( complete a/c system has been replaced, complete fuel system has been replaced, window motor has been replaced, etc. ). Neither the Ford manufacturer or dealerships have responded, agreed or offered any investigation, correction, compensation or assistance in response to these previously written and verbal matters, and legal action will commence. The issues listed in this table are only the recent (last 3 months), and do not include the montage of problems in the last 2 years, some of which are mentioned in the comments section.
