Intermittently transmission went in and out of overdrive by itself. When this failure occurred and the system failed to correct itself vehicle was taken to a dealership. Dealer determined that an electrical malfunction affected the speed control sensor, and the sensor needed to be replaced. The electrical failure was caused by wiring harness plastic installation disintegrating and falling off. Manufacturer issued an extended warranty on this part, but consumer's vehicle was over the warranty mileage.

I have a Ford Contour 2000. I bought it two years ago, and it has been in and out of Ford repair shop since I have it. Had trouble with fuse in driver door-fuse burned and shift was hard to put into gear;cruise, blinkers,ac and heat did not work. And for a year now,it is stalling. Dealer has replaced wire harness from wires to gas tank. Worked without stalling for few months, now is stalling again. Does not stall with dealer-dealer cannot find cause. Also, dashboard has warped and defroster grill has popped up. As of today, defroster still works.

Cracked wiring in the engine department. All wires leading to the engine, battery, coil and possible fuel injectors are cracked and exposed. Little or no insalation are left on the wires. Wire harness that leads to the ecu is cracked and exposed. This has not caused a fire, but all this is causing more damage everytime the car is serviced.

Vehicle filled with smoke, no flames just wires burning. Consumer received a recall notice 01v230000/ manufacturer's recall 01s22. Made and appointment, and part was ordered 4 days ahead, at that time information came up as a recall. Once consumer arrived at dealer was unable to pull up recall, and denied recall repairs.
Electrical fire inside car about 2 years ago. Electrical system down a/c does not work, back window switches do not work, killed battery and alternator.
The wiring was damaged by corrosion which caused the abs light to malfunction, the alarm system to be defective, the heating system to work improperly, and the cigarette lighter to not work.
My car was in the shop 5 times in one month - all electrical problems. Alternator, battery, starter, wiring harness, speed sensor and oxygen sensor were all changed. The Ford dealership does not understand why I am having all these problems. It was also in a garage fire at the dealership in this time and I had smoke damage to my car on top of the engine problems. Needless to say, I loss money on the trade in. This is the worse car I have ever owned and will never own another Ford car or truck again.
Screw for driver side sunvisor fell off while vehicle was in motion, causing blocked vision totally. The driver side visor fell off twice. The second fall shorted electrical wires causing radio, clock and other components to fail.
While driving at interstate speeds our alternator wire melted off at the connection to the alternator. The alternator, the wire and a 175 amp fuse were all bad. A replacement alternator could not be found in less than 2 days so the original alternator was rebuilt. I have in my possesion the blown 175 amp fuse and the melted alternator wire. This is the second time an electrical wire has melted on our 1998 Contour. It is the third time we have been stranded. Ford has a service bulletin for this type of problem with the correction being, replace the alternator and the wire on Contours with the 2. 5l engine.
Wiring harness problems are same symptoms as mentioned in investigation # ea01001. Has replaced wiring harness 8 times.
Whenever the automobile is driven through a puddle of water or upon prolonged driving on a wet road, the power steering locks up. When this occurs, the power steering remains locked for several seconds up to over one minute before returning to normal. These conditions also cause the "battery" light to illuminate. I returned the vehicle to the dealer in approximately June 1998, but their fix action "replacing a headlight wiring assembly" did not appear to address the problem and the problem reoccurred immediately the next time that the autombile was driven on a rainy day. Upon returning the automobile a second tme, I was informed by both a service technician and a service manager that this is a problem that the Ford company is aware of but is making no attempt to inform the automobile owners until they actually experience the problem.
There is a defective switc/ panel & wire assembely parts components of the wiring panel. This causes problem with air conditioner, blower, etc. Will be taking vehicle to dealer to have electric component checked out.

First day car was bought engine died, took to dealer, and they gave consumer another Contour. Currently, vehcile will shut off in middle of intersection. Dealer replaced transmission, and engine was acting up. Consumer states vehicle has been in 3 times for transmission problems, it jerks and vibrates, consumer does not think that dealer replaced transmission like they said. 1 time for engine problems. Consumer has been in 2 accidents due to sudden acceleration. Front sway bar replaced, steering would shimmy and rattle. Blower motor assembly replaced, due to rattling noise in air conditioner, also cycling switch replaced due to air conditioner not cooling. Left front seat belt buckle assembly replaced, belt would not buckle. Starter failed and was replaced. Engine light illuminated, dealer found loose connection at act. Rear struts replaced, noisy.
Consumer experienced a series of electrical problems which resulted in a fire. All lights inside and outside went out except the headlamps. Also, fuses blew out too often and smoke came from the turn signal. Mechanic replaced the turn signal and noticed that all other wires in the steering column were damaged. Dealership insisted that if there was no extnded warranty they would not repair.
The plastic insulation on the electrical wiring burned off, causing a short circuit in the heating system, heat remains on high. . Et.
I have a Ford Contour (1996 sport w/2. 5 v6. . Nearly all of the wiring under the hood either has broken or no insulation on it. Some times the temperature light comes on. . . Today the electric cooling fan smoked then blew a fuse. I've never seen wiring like this. I expect better from Ford than this. . This car just turned over to 72000 miles. . . . This car is a total fire hazard. . . . . I've owned Ford cars and trucks all my life but if nothing can be done about this car it will be the last Ford I buy. . This wiring should be against the law. I wonder if the safety team knows about this.
Vehicle started smoking, consumer took the problem to the dealer who found that some wires had melted and must have shorted something out.
The main electrical wires in the engine compartment are all peeling. The insulation of all the connectors are all dry rotted, causing numours odb codes to pop up. Because of the short in the wires.
While driving in rush hour traffic vehicle stalled. Dealer had difficulty in diagnosing the problem, and contacted the manufacturer for any recommendations. The manufacturer indicated that vehicle stalled due to a malfunction in the wiring harness.
