1 Steering Column problem of the 2006 Ford Crown Victoria

Failure Date: 08/02/2023

I had this vehicle in for the recall in 2014 and according to the dealer repair the steering column was within limits not to complete the second half of recall 13s08 but a few weeks ago my steering shaft separated with no warning and I came to a rest in an intersection. I had the vehicle towed to a local repair shop and they confirmed the separation of steering. I did not put a claim into insurance and no damage was done to any other vehicle so the police were not called. There were no warning lights illuminated until after the failure. Thankfully I was not on the highway. I contacted Ford motor company and they were no help as well as the dealer who did the recall in 2014. They said that the recall was done within the perimeters of the process and that they couldn't help me. I now have spent over $1500 on repairs and still is not correct and I am worried about it happening again. I think that the second part of the recall should be mandatory with the bracket that holds the column from slipping out. Just prior to the steering column breaking just before I turned there was a slight binding and then it separated. Other than that there was no warning. I got the recall done as soon as I got the letter in the mail and I think Ford should be responsible for this repair as well as all the Crown Victorias on the road. Thank you.

2 Steering Column problem of the 2004 Ford Crown Victoria

Failure Date: 02/01/2022

I was informed by my mechanic that my steering column shaft needs to be replaced on my 2004 primary vehicle. Ford says they do not have a recall and will not cover the service. I have a recall for the same issue for my (not currently driving) 2005 Ford Crown Victoria interceptor made in the same location (st. Thomas). 2005 manufacturer recall number 13s08, NHTSA recall number 13v385000). The recall includes cars originally sold in nh (both of mine) and says: severe corrosion can seize the lower intermediate shaft which may cause the upper intermediate shaft to collapse and the steering column lower bearing to separate. Safety risk: if the lower bearing separates, the vehicle may experience a loss of steering, increasing the risk of a crash. How can Ford say there is no issue when there is an active recall for it on model years 2005-2011? have there been reported issues/crashes of 2004 cars with this defect? is there anything I can do to have Ford cover this? or are they not bothering because there probably aren't many 2004s still on the road? is it possible to get Ford to provide the manufacturer lot/date codes of the defective steering parts? as my 2004 & 2005 were built in the same location, I would bet my 2004 was built with the same steering part manufacturer lot as my 2005- they probably don't turn out the volume of police interceptors as commercial cars. Thank you.

3 Steering Column problem of the 2005 Ford Crown Victoria

Failure Date: 08/26/2020

Despite having subject vehicle serviced by a dealership under recall 13v385, the lower intermediate shaft developed a corrosion defect after four years wherein it became difficult to steer the vehicle at lower speeds and a loud clunking noise was audible from within the cabin every time the top of the steering wheel passed the 6 o'clock position. Owner investigated: upper universal joint at the bottom of the lower intermediate shaft was beginning to separate, shifting out of place approximately 3/16ths of an inch when steering wheel was in the 6 o'clock position before slamming back into place causing a loud 'click' which reverberated into the cabin through the steering column and sounding much worse. Vehicle was taken to recall servicing dealership; recall 13v385 was only warrantied for 3 months or 5000 kilometres (3125 miles). Owner was charged $888. 31 cad ($675. 95 usd) for repairs on a recall part experiencing the same conditions for which the recall was issued. Owner contacted manufacturer customer relations department to inquire about recalled parts experiencing recall conditions, was advised of the recall warranty and that paid service results in 2-year, unlimited mileage warranty.

4 Steering Column problem of the 2008 Ford Crown Victoria

Failure Date: 01/14/2020

Noticed intermittent stiffness in the steering, an inspection by owner at the steering column determined that the bearing connecting the upper and lowers shafts had extended from its housing. It was determined this failure was consistent with a previous recall 13r01. The vehicle was taken to gillespie Ford in gurnee, IL, who stated the recall had been closed out in 2013. They went on to state that the only repair made in 2013 was replacement of the lower, exterior steering shaft, and no retaining clip was installed to prevent separation of the bearing. Gillespie Ford stated there was no corrosion or any other cause of the bearing failure, saying that when the recalls were done they would simply replace the entire steering column and not install the retaining clip. Gillespie Ford declined to make any further repairs under the recall even though the condition existed with serious safety concerns, but did offer to replace the entire steering column for $1600. 00.

16 Steering Column problem of the 2005 Ford Crown Victoria

Failure Date: 03/18/2015

I received a recall notice in February 2015 and brought my car to a dealership for repairs on March 18, 2015. The service manager of that branch informed me that there is a problem with the upper steering column bearings that aren't covered by the recall. He said he spoke to the recall center and the reason they gave was because this recall was issued in 2013 and I didn't respond in time. I did not receive a letter and if I did, I certainly would've responded in a timely way. Then I spoke to the recall center and argued that this upper column problem is a direct result of the lower column shaft; to which I was told that typically Ford only covers what's explicitly detailed in the recall notice. Also, I was told, the reason for my issues with the letter may be because the NJ mvc has been slow in disseminating driver information to car companies. If that's the case, it's absolutely unfair and unreasonable to hold me responsible for a bureaucratic issue of communication. This argument might not be too valid, but there is a recall issued by NHTSA regarding improper repairs of the upper steering column shaft. This suggests to me that there is a problem in general with steering column shafts, so I think my repairs should be covered. I told the service manager to just fix what's covered and I'll take whatever risks afterwards. I don't have the money for those repairs and, out of principle, I don't think I should be liable for those costs.

19 Steering Column problem of the 2004 Ford Crown Victoria

Failure Date: 10/03/2014

When making a turn, I felt a hitch in the steering, like it doesn't want to turn smoothly. It has gotten worse and checking under the hood reveals rusted steering column shafts with universal joints with no zerk fittings. While checking with the Ford parts counter, I found out there has been a recall on these parts. I called Ford motor company & gave them my v. I. N. And they tell me there is no recall on this for my vehical. So I did an internet search and find that there is a recall on this very same thing for 2005-2011 Crown Victoria's(Ford recall # 13s08). If my 2004 Crown Victoria has the same steering with the same parts with the same defect, why is it not included in the recall?.

20 Steering Column problem of the 2008 Ford Crown Victoria

Failure Date: 07/20/2014

Corrected description for complaint 10618222: driving on highway at 70 m. P. H. , noticed increasing "play" in steering wheel; stopped at rest area. When ready to leave, started to back out and turned steering wheel less than 1/2 turn to the left. I heard/felt something "pop," at which point the steering wheel would spin freely and no longer affected the front wheels--complete loss of steering control. Had car towed to a Ford dealer, who confirmed the steering column had broken components. The dealer also noted that this vehicle had previously received repairs to the steering under Ford recall 13s08. Ford dealer stated they had contacted Ford motor company about covering all or part of the repair, but "corporate had refused. " the expensive repair ($1,093. 60) was all mine. Can 't help but wonder if the recall repair went far enough.
