While traveling from work to home had a lost of power and started making noise upfront so pulled over and checked everything and it was fine fluids checked regularly and was told it could be a ptu problem and it has the jerking and sometimes you hear a chain noise and sounds like a slapping sound. Has something leaking up by tranny pretty sure its the ptu cause that's exactly where's it's located and have read lots of things online and everything. Their should really be recall for the ptu unit before someone majorly gets hurt cause of the loss of power all of sudden when traveling. Was traveling highway home.

I was traveling on 95 north in s. Carolina when my car jerked and everyone lurched forward in the vehicle as if we had traveled over a speed bump or something large in the road. It was mid day and nothing was in the road. We continued traveling and about 30 miles it happened again and we realized it was the transmission. We were fortunate to make it home and took it to our mechanic. He saw no visual signs of trouble such as leakage, warning lights or check engine lights even during the test drive so he did an internet search and found that Ford suggest running transmission fluid through, draining and repeating. He did this. We had to travel out of state again the next month and the same problem occurred on the highway. I'm so concerned for my family and I'm now reading on the internet that this is not just a random issue and people are pleading for a safety recall before someone is hurt or killed due to the multiple transmission issues that are affecting so many of these vehicles. We need help, what does it have to take?.
After 3 different seal repairs and ptu replacement(20k) during warranty period, current ptu is whining / howling between 30-50 mph. Dealer say fluid has been leaking slowly and ptu full of sludge. No evidence of leakage on garage floor but under carriage in ptu area is gummed up from fluid mixing with dirt. Based on mileage from repair receipts, took approx. 67k miles for this ptu to go bad. No adjustment programs at this time for ptu's as per phone call with Ford customer service.
Bought the car used from a Ford dealer with 46,138 miles and purchased an extend warranty 07/17/2010 in Dec 2010 noticed a smell from car , took it to a local repair shop, he printed me out the Ford TSB 09-25-7 that identified the problem with the right hand int shaft leak on the power transfer unit (ptu) I took to a local Ford dealership, they confirmed the problem and fixed, under the original car warranty. (55,799 miles) in Aug 2012 noticed the same smell, went an other Ford dealership(9-12-12), same problem with ptu seals, and not covered under the extended warranty. Paid approximately $800 to repair. In may 2014 same smell again, took back to the dealer who did the last repair (6-27-14), ptu again, except this time it needed seals plus a new ptu over $1,400 to repair. The smell comes from the fluid dripping onto the exhaust, not sure how toxic or flammable it is but I know it can't be good for you. This is not caused by miss use of the car or lack of maintenance. It is Ford poor design, and I realize mistakes happen, but stand behind your product.
Burning smell originating from failed seal (now on national backorder this past year) in ptu assembly on most Ford Edge and Mercury mkx models. I've had my vehicle in the shop 3 times over the past year and they do not have replacement ptu assemblies in stock as the company who made them are now out of business. Transmission fluid leaks from ptu assembly onto exhaust, into vents and into our lungs. Vehicle is still in the service area at midway Ford in roseville, mn. They say I can drive it until they find a part, however it is winter and that is not an option as the windows must remain open. . Read more...
The contact owns a 2007 Ford Edge. The contact stated that there was a leak in the vehicle and all of the transmission fluid leaked out. He took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the oil seal on the transmission. A few days later, he smelled transmission fluid burning. The contact took the vehicle back to the dealer and they replaced the seal once again; however, the burning odor is still present. He believes that this is a health hazard and that a recall should be issued. The failure mileage was 34,000 and current mileage was 47,000.
I have a 2007 Ford Edge awd. Around 15,000 miles, it began to have a "burned rubber" smell waft into the passenger compartment whenever I came to a stop after driving for awhile. Sometimes I could see smoke sift up through the hood near the windshield. The dealer found the ptu valve (power transfer unit) to be leaking, and I think they changed it. It worked for awhile, but within 4 months, it began to smell again. It was not too bad because it was spring and summer and the problem is only really bad during the winter when the heater is on. It's now October 2009, and I'm using the heater again. The smell was bad, so I took it to the dealer again. They said grease was packed into the valve, and the grease had overflowed. They did not replace the ptu valve. They only steam cleaned my car. It still smells, although not as bad. I have 35,000 miles on the car and I've owned it for 1. 5 years brand new. The internet has revealed that many Fordedge owners are experiencing the same thing, but Ford can't seem to fix it. It is only on awd models because the fluid that is leaking involves the transfer of power to the back tires. There is a website dedicated solely to this problem: stinkinedge. Com please help us convince Ford this is a defect involving a noxious smell and potentially dangerous chemical exposure. It is also annoying and uncomfortable. There seems to be no fix.
