1 Wheel Bolts problem of the 2018 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 11/04/2024

The contact's wife owns a 2018 Ford Edge. As the contact's wife pulled into their driveway, the contact heard an abnormal, hissing sound coming from the rear, passenger side tire. The contact used a set of pliers to remove a stone from the tire which caused the tire to deflate. As the contact attempted to replace the tire, the contact discovered that lug nuts on tire had swelled which prevented the lug nuts from being removed with a wrench. The contact called his son to stronger tools which they used to remove the lug nuts off the tire. After the contact placed the spare tire on the vehicle, it was taken to an independent mechanic where they acknowledged the lug nut failure and referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The lug nuts on the other three tires were also tested and the contact experienced the same failure with all three tires. The dealer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline to file a complaint. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 49,000.

6 Wheel Bolts problem of the 2016 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 11/25/2021

Lug nuts are 2 piece: the thread piece and the chrome head piece. The pieces became loose from each other, then the thread piece rusted and caused the chrome piece to swell and deform so the lug wrench could no longer fit on the lugnut, thus making it impossible to loosen. This can be a major problem when changing a flat tire. I needed to take my car to an auto mechanic to have several of the factory installed lugnuts replaced. I will need to buy replacement non-oem lugnuts so this doesn’t happen any more. I read that this is a problem happening on many Ford vehicles.

7 Wheel Bolts problem of the 2015 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 11/01/2021

Ford dealer told me the lug nuts were a bad two piece design and he has had to replace many of them by drilling out the studs and replacing them. Encouraged proactively replacing the 2 piece lug nuts with a new one piece design for a cost of $128 for 4 tires. Not covered by warranty/extended but this seems ridiculous for a vehicle that's 6 yrs old. I see lots of references on the internet to this issue. Seems like a straightforward bad design and obvious recall issue.
