1 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2024

A few times I have pressed the brakes when coming to a red light and stop signs but instead of my vehicle stopping it propelled me forward as it excellerated out of no where and pushed me into oncoming traffic, I almost was hit by other cars and I almost hit other cars and even have had to swerve onto the side walk to prevent myself from getting g hit by another car. If there were people walking, I would have definitely hit them! when I press the brake, I’m not expecting to accelerate instead also apparently this recall of this issue was already done back in 2005 but I just purchased this vehicle in the fall of 2023 and the dealer says there is no recall since it’s already been fixed by the previous owner years ago but it needs to be fixed as it’s still doing it to me.

4 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2017

My 04 Ford Escape has a 4 cylinder and is a manual. It has begun to accelerate by itself. It will accelerate whether it is in gear or in neutral. I assumed there would recall for this problem, as I know other vehicles have been in serious accidents with similar problems. I can take my foot off of the pedal and it will stay at a steady speed, or accelerate, on its own. Often when I'm switching gears, put it in neutral, it will self-rev itself up to 4000+ rpms! I will have to wait and coast for about 10 to 30 seconds for it to bring itself back down to a reasonable rpm to get it into the next gear. So, it is intermittent, but happens about 50% of the time you are driving it, and at times can be very dangerous. I assumed Ford might pay for the repair as this is a dangerous situation, however my dealer says "no" because there is no recall.

5 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Takata recall.

11 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/28/2014

Vehicle airbag light goes on and off intermittently. This happens whether parked or driving, whether there is a passenger or not. Vehicle will "rev" in park, if the steering wheel is turned slightly, bumped or move. Twice vehicle has "jumped" while in parked when this has happened. Major issue: door locks will not open. There is no manual lock on the doors, only electronic. No place for a key. Passengers have been locked inside with no way to exit vehicle except to climb over seat. Will happen to various doors, most often the front passenger door, but not all doors at the same time (we believe this may happen,) door lock will click 3 times but will not unlock.

12 Vehicle Speed Control problem

When the contact depressed the accelerator pedal while the vehicle was in the park position, it shut off. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure only occurred once. The failure mileage was 160,000.

13 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/23/2014

Had speed control on, when to slow down, stepped on brakes cruse control light came off but the car didn't slow down it speed up! I did have a recall call done on the car for this. But the fix didn't work. The car speed up to 90 mph. I had to take it out of gear to slow the car down. I did everything I could think of to stop the car from speeding up. Stomped on the brakes, push the cruse control button on and off. Towed the car and the repair guy said there was snow in the cruse control casing, that was causing it. He disconnected it.

21 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2012

My daughter was about a mile from home after taking a friend home. It was August 27, 2012 around 9:30pm. Her car went off the road crashed into a tree and caught fire. She was killed in the accident. What is puzzling is there were no skid marks, no signs of braking. It has been brought to our attention just yesterday that there was a recall on her automobile that we were never aware of. We were told that if there was a throttle problem then that would maybe explain the absent skid marks and no signs of braking. She was only 19 years old. I was told to contact you and that maybe you could help. Thank you for all you can do. [xxx] heartsick mother information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

23 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2012

I would like to add my complaint to the acceleration problems of the 2001-2004 Ford Escapes which my 2004 has also experienced. There have been a few situations over the last 2-3 years where my cars engine would suddenly start racing while parked at idle. When the issue first began I was able to tap the gas pedal with my foot and the car would return to a standard idle. The more recent instances now require turning the vehicle off and it would idle normal again after being restarted. I believe this problem is connected to a current investigation and the letter dated 7/10/12 written to Ford from the center for auto safety. This may also be connected to a prior recall 04v-574 that I was recently made aware of. Please keep me advised of your efforts or anything I can do to help. Thank you.

24 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/06/2012

As I was accelerating to get on the freeway I felt my car accelerate beyond the speed in which I was applying pressure. I immediately removed my foot from the pedal but the pedal remained all the way on the floor board. I tried braking but the brake pedal applied no stopping force. I exited the freeway not knowing what was ahead in terms of innocent bystanders and traffic. Not knowing how to proceed I began standing on the brake with both feet and lifting the emergency brake. My car continued to gain speed and showed no signs of slowing down. I drove the right side of my vehicle down some concrete construction barriers on the feeder in hopes that it would slow the vehicle but our speed was so great at this point we were bouncing off and I was afraid we would cause a more horrific accident by being thrown back on to the freeway. I made it through an intersection narrowly missing a truck driving through. I got on to the other side of the concrete barriers at the intersection and began driving on the dirt road under construction. Searching for something to crashed into to stop my vehicle as each passing second our speed increased, I located a telephone pole and crashed into it with my two small children, my mother and myself in the vehicle. I am unsure if the vehicle caught fire but there were bystanders would came with a fire extinguisher and sprayed my engine. I am also unsure of the speed of the vehicle at the point of impact. The last time I looked it was around 60 miles per hour when I was entering the freeway.

25 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2012

As I was accelerating to pass a slow moving vehicle, I pressed on the gas petal and after I was back in my proper lane, my vehicle kept speeding and not backing off on the gas. I then put the car in neural and the engine continued to keep racing. I tried to stomp lightly on the gas petal to see if it would come back up but it didn't. I then shut off the engine and called the tow truck company.

29 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2010

The engine revs in below zero weather ever since I bought the Escape in 2003. I'll be driving on the freeway at 60 mph and the only way I can slow the speed of the car is by applying the brakes and the engine continues revving as if it were still going 60. Then when I get off the freeway the car continues to rev like that and I stop at stop signs and it revs and only by pushing down hard on the brake can I control the car as it continues to rev as if going about 60mph. Often when I start it in the morning it revs (when below zero) and continues to rev as I drive a mile or so to have coffee. This has been the case since I got the car. I initially took it in to tousley Ford in white bear, minnesota. They said it was fixed and charged something like $186 and it did the same thing on driving it home (about 12 miles). I took it back then and there as it was dangerous and they tried to fix it again and it still revved. Attempted fixes: Feb 18, 08 replaced iac, replaced 1l8z*9f715 x-valve. Then Feb. 19, '08 replaced iac again per invoice. I just gave up and due to finances decided to take my chances driving it as is (still revs). What do I do now? the date of incident instead of Jan. 8, 2010 should be stated as "every winter since 2003". Never has been fixed.

30 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2009

Accelerating up hill to posted 50mph when accelerator pedal punched to the floor on it's own. Vehicle reached 85mph and slowed to approx 55mph when downshifted to 1st while simultaneously pressing brake pedal and pulling up on emergency brake. Accelerator pedal wouldn't come up despite attempts with foot. Ultimately crashed, vehicle totaled, property damage to a house and neighbor's yard, personal injuries sustained by driver only; no passengers.

31 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2009

Going up a hill on snow covered roads so was going slow when car started accelerating on its own. Kept stepping on the brake, but continued to accelerate. Got off the road and stopped the rpm was up to 7. The acceleration continued to happen a few times every winter for the next few years and I would take it to a Ford dealership to have it checked each time it happened. They tried a few different repairs and nothing worked. Jan. 21,2011 called Ford and reported the problem and they said this is the first they heard of this problem. In sept. Of 2011 the recall #12s37 came and I took it in to have the recall taken care of. Since Jan. Of 2013 it has done it to me twice - this recall obviously did not fix the hazardous problem! I again called Ford, got a case number, and robert allen - the Ford regional customer service manager called me and said he investigated my case and with the vehicle being out of warranty and there are no current recalls there is nothing Ford can do. I told him that I felt this is a safety issue and the vehicle needs to be off the road and I can't ethically trade it because I don't want to put anybody else in harm's way and I hoped Ford would make it right by me and he said there is no trade assistance available from Ford. I asked him if Ford would pay me what it was worth since the vehicle should be off the road and he repeated it is out of warranty and Ford would not be able to pay me. Obviously the spokesperson for Ford doesn't have the same ethics I have. Lh.

32 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2007

Leaving a traffic light the vehicle idle increased to over 4000 rpms after I took my foot off the accelerator pedal. I shut off the engine but the idle did not return to normal. I've been told that was an unusual case of the "idle speed control" failure. This "racing" had happened once before at 48,000 miles but after I restarted the vehicle idle speed returned to normal.

33 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2005

I was in a grocery store parking lot, looking for a parking place, went down one aisle, turned left to and started up the next aisle. Right after I made the turn I pulled into the aisles second parking spot on my left side. I never picked up speed after turning into the aisle. Just after I started into the parking spot my car literally lunged forward and "took off" all on its own. (I did not have my foot on the gas pedal). . . . I rushed to push down on the brake but by that time my car had already run up on the hood of the car facing me from the other aisle. I had no control over the car. I was to stunned at the time to know now if my brake stopped the car or if the car's acceleration stopped on it's own once it was on the hood of the other car. I am so thankful no one was injured and how bad this could have been if I was stopping to let a pedestrian cross and this happened at that time.
