I drove a short distance to a nearby park, parked the vehicle, took my dog out of the back, and closed the the rear liftgate/hatchback in a normal fashion. We were just walking away from the car when the rear window exploded. It was a loud explosion with flying glass. The whole window blew out. It was so extreme that other people in the parking lot jumped out of their cars in alarm and came over to see what had happened. Nothing had hit the window. Nothing was touching the window. The temperature was not extreme--cool and damp but not cold. There was no apparent cause for this and it was very dangerous because of the flying glass. If it had happened seconds earlier I could have been injured or my pet could have been injured, or both. I note that I had pushed the rear defrost button while driving to clear up some fogging because the weather was damp and the big dog was back there, but that was normal use.
Rear window shattered when I closed the liftgate while it was sitting in my driveway! wasn't shut hard, actually impossible to slam one of these lifgates. There were no obstructions to make contact with the glass.
Ford Escape rear window hinges. The hinges disintegrated and the glass almost caused serious injury. I luckily caught the glass before it fell. I noticed a white residue on the glass whic was from the faulty hinges. My car was in my garage.

The vehicle was parked in a driveway on a fairly cold day (temperatures in the low 30s). After loading the rear of the vehicle and upon closing the liftgate, the rear window shattered. Prior to this happening, there were no signs of a chipped/damaged window. The liftgate was not slammed harder than usual and there were no items blocking it from closing.
While shutting my rear hatch after removing my recycling, the rear window exploded. There was no contact to the window and it hadn't been opened. There's no explanation as to why the window would just explode on its own.

Shut the rear hatch to our Ford Escape and the window exploded.
My car was parked in front of a friends house and we were unloading bags from the trunk. A friend closed the trunk (not just the window, the entire door) when the back windshield exploded shooting shards of glass all over the ground, my car and the people standing nearby. No one was seriously injured thank goodness but we were all shocked. The door was closed in a normal matter but it sounded like a gun had been shot into the window when it happened. We had no idea what had just occurred but after looking into it myself, many other Ford Escape owners seem to have had the same issue with their windows exploding for no apparent reason. This is a huge safety issue as well as an inconvenience. What if someone had been sitting in the back seat or my dog had been in the trunk where she often sits? they would have been severely cut by the flying glass or worse. Ford is a large company and for the most part has a good reputation. Why would they allow an issue that has been going on since 2005 go on like this with no apology or recall? it is sad that large companies take advantage of customers and allow them to pay exorbitant fees for a mistake on their end. Shame on you Ford.

On 3/22/14 I purchased a used 2010 Ford Escape at rountree Ford in swanzey nh. On 3/23/14 I parked the vehicle, let my dogs out of the back cargo area, when I closed the tailgate the rear window shattered into a million pieces for no apparent reason.
Upon closing the rear hatch of the 2010 Ford Escape, the rear lift-gate glass shattered. Glass poured into the vehicle, onto the ground, onto other owners' personal property, and over the person who closed the rear hatch. While no injury was caused as the operator was dressed for cold weather, there seems to be a safety issue both to the end user and others who may be around the place where the incident happened. In addition to the loss of time and hassle of cleaning broken glass from personal property as well as the personal property of others, the missing glass in effect makes the vehicle less safe to operate under normal conditions with no rear protection from the elements. Personal auto insurance has covered the loss. Though until the repairs can be completed there will be an increased risk to operate the vehicle. Furthermore, there does not seem to be a resolution to prevent the incident from recurring.
8 am removing packages from rear of Escape. Upon simply closing the hatch door, the glass shattered to bits. I have opened and closed that hatch door dozens of times. It closes well . No need to slam. Shocks balance well. I checked the web and found many similar occurrences. I immediately recorded (camera) the aftermath with the hopes that Ford may come to the pump. I had the car fixed at the dealer $1200 out of pocket. Ford canada will not even acknowledge the NHTSA #10039131 TSB 10-22-10 per phone call to Ford help line.

My wife went out to her 2010 Ford Escape this morning. She retrieved something out of the back of the truck, closed the rear lift gate and the rear window shattered instantaneously, showering her with glass. She was fortunately wearing glasses, so none reached her eyes.
Went grocery shopping. Loaded groceries in rear. Closed tailgate, window literately exploded, glass everywhere.
My rear hatch window just exploded. I pulled into the car port at the airport for our christmas flight home, took luggage out the back and closed the hatch and boom glass everywhere. Luckily no one was hurt but what was I supposed to do? miss our flight home for christmas or call a neighbor at 8 am to come swap out vehicles so it wouldn't be vandalized while I was gone. It was in the upper 30s when this happened, however my vehicle stays parked outside so it warmed up gradually like it always does. We I got to my destination I called my Ford dealer since I bought the extended warranty and they told me it was not covered under warranty even though I stated the numerous articles that I have read about this issue.

2010 Ford Escape. I pulled into the driveway after shopping, unloaded the car, and then closed the rear liftgate door. Upon closing, the rear liftgate window exploded and sent small pieces of glass all over my garage. There was no previous damage to the window, and the door was closed with a normal amount of force. Fortunately, noone was in or around the car (except for me) and there were no injuries.
Wife was driving vehicle, when she heard a pop. When she got home she noticed the sunroof glass had exploded. She told me and I went out to see if I could find a rock or any other foreign object. Could not find anything. The sunroof glass just failed in an outward direction. Ford has denied warranty claim and denied our appeal. I have read several other reports of this same thing happening with their Ford Escapes. Driving along and hear a pop sound. Then later realize their sunroof has failed. This critical situation needs to be brought to attention of Ford motor CO. And have them stand behind their product, if said product is still under the manufacturers warranty.

Substantial amount of moisture collects on the inside of the windshield after a heavy rain. Both the driver's and the passenger's seat track assemblies started to rust as a result. The car smells like mold. Took the car to a Ford dealership (in nc where I was stationed at the time) in November 2012 and it was discovered that the drain holes in the right ride door (rear) were never punched out. That was corrected; however, the moisture problem continues. At the nc Ford dealership, it was also discovered that the rear hatch window gasket leaks. It was resealed, but not replaced. Took the car to a MA dealership in August 2013 for same leak issue. The gasket needs to be replaced. Why was this not done before in November? a window gasket is supposed to last 5-6 years not less than 3 ! car is still collecting moisture - problem not solved.
