The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving 40 mph, the vehicle briefly jerked and hesitated before returning to normal functionality. The contact stated that the failure became a regular occurrence. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the torque converter. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 128,000.

2 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2020

Torque converter, transmission, warning lights on Thursday, 12/3/20, my daughter returned home and explained that she noticed a whining sound as she turned into our neighborhood. About 2 hours later she started the car for me and I could not distinguish any sounds to be concerned with and told her she would be fine to drive it to her volleyball practiceI saidit doesn't sound like anything that will cause it to die on the side of the road. within 10 minutes after leaving called to say the car was losing power and barely moving on a busy city street. She had to coast across oncoming traffic with no power to get to a street where she could wait for me. Ultimately where she was stranded was a dangerous spot to be for other cars turning onto the street because of a wall blocking their view of her vehicle until they made the turn. When I arrived I confirmed that the car was not driveable. Shifting in and out of gears barely generated any movement. It took 20 minutes driving on a residential street at about 3 mph to reach a parking lot (it took one minute to get the car over a slight hump turning into the parking lot) where I left the vehicle overnight until I could have it towed to a Ford dealership. Ford diagnosed the following suspect torqueconverter internal failure sent metal through thepump (whine) and through out the rest of thetransmission. two repair options new transmission for $5,809. 18 or overhaul for $5,181. 57. This is a common issue and is dangerous enough to warrant a thorough investigation. Vehicles should not go from running fine to complete failure while driving on busy roadways. Replacing a torque converter is one thing but a failure of a torque converter causing a $5,000+ repair job is another thing. Warning light after failure may also need to be investigated. This vehicle has a record of regular routine maintenance.

3 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2020

I was driving down the road and an "info" light came on saying "transmission fault - service transmission now". Then check engine light came on. Took car to a transmission repair company and they said it's a torque converter issue and I need a whole new transmission for $4,500!!!! this car isn't that old and I'm seeing this is a very common issue with 2014 Ford Escapes. In motion on city street.

4 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2020

I was driving on a state highway and the car started slowing down. When I pressed the gas the engine revved but the car had no power. The car stopped in the middle of the road, and when I tried to shift to the "sport" shift it was clear that the transmission would not engage properly. I pushed the car (out of the highway) onto the shoulder and turned the car off. I waited about 15 minutes, started the car and drove it 5 miles home. Once on the way home I had to turn it off for 15 minutes again. It was shifting erratically and was barely able to make it home. When I got home and pulled into the driveway, the "service transmission" light came on. This was the first indication that I was given that there was a problem. This is very dangerous, since the car just died on the highway with no warning. I am very lucky that it was not a busy highway and that I was able to get out of the road quickly. I'm told by the dealership that it is the torque converter and the entire transmission needs to be replaced. This needs to be recalled before somebody gets killed by having this happen on the highway. We should at least get a warning *before* it happens.

5 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2020

I was driving to work and while slowing down for a stop light my car started shaking and jerking pretty violently. I needed to get to work so I kept driving and at the next light the same thing happened only more extreme and then the car stopped. I started the car back up very easily so I kept going. No engine or transmission light came on the dash so I didn't think it was that bad. The next light came and the car would start but it wouldn't go anymore. Again no lights came on the dash so I had zero warning whatsoever and I was stranded at that stoplight. Had to call the cops because I was blocking traffic and pay for a tow truck and the dealership I brought it to said it was a bad torque converter and that it's a common issue. If this is a common issue I should not be having to deal with this with zero warning and a new transmission is so expensive. Just the fact that they straight up told me this is a common issue and there's no recall on it makes me not want to buy another Ford again even though I do love my car.

6 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 02/25/2020

I was driving on the hwy with my 1 year old in the back when I my car started to slow on its own. I pressed harder on the gas to keep up with traffic and the car surged forward almost rear ending the one in front of me. It did this once more before I got off the highway. When I got off the highway I had to make a left hand turn and halfway through the intersection my car could barely accelerate. There were no notifications or warnings that popped up. As I tried to make it up the hill on the next road my car stalled and then a notification popped up saying transmission fault service now. I had to get it towed and Ford says it is the torque converter that caused damage to my transmission. I asked them about a service bulletin related to the part but they said they take no responsibility for the part failing. I have read hundreds of complaints related to this part on the internet. My make and model car is listed as a clunker online due to this issue. My daughter and I could have been killed if my car slowed down any more going though the intersection because we barely made it before traffic came through. Ford should make this right before someone is killed. Almost all of the complaints I read said the cars that failed due to this part when they were traveling at a high rate of speed. When I talked to the service people at the Ford dealership in alpharetta they said they know there is an issue with this part but until Ford does a recall they can't help me. Please take action before a family is killed due to Fords negligence.

7 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2019

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that the transmission indicator illuminated while driving and the vehicle decelerated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who checked the vehicle and provided technical service bulletin number: 192100, p1744. The mechanic stated that the torque converter performance circuit was high. The vehicle was taken to bob gillingham Ford (216-398-1300, located at 8383 brookpark rd, parma, OH 44129) where it was determined that an unknown module needed to be replaced. The part was on backorder. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 41,000.

8 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 11/19/2019

A check engine light came on and I took it in to have looked at. The dealership told me the torque converter went bad - even though I only have 51,000 miles on my vehicle. Basically the clutch slips when I drive. They told me to replace that it would be almost $5000 but that they recommended just replacing the whole transmission since it's only $900 more. I asked if this needed to be replaced immediately and they said it was just a matter of time before the whole thing goes out completely. Now I am trying to figure out whether it is safe to even drive to try to get a second opinion. Parts of a transmission should not go out on such a low mileage car. Clearly there is an issue with the transmissions in this model as numerous other people have reported similar issues. The dealership said this would normally be covered under the powertrain warranty - because I am under 60,000 miles - but they said it isn't covered because that expired in August. I called Ford customer care and they just said there was nothing they could do, no explanation. Ford needs to fix this.

9 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2019

The transmission of my 2014 car with 77,000 miles needs to be replaced per my Ford dealer. I was driving on the highway at about 60 mph when suddenly I was unable to accelerate. I was luckily able to coast to a nearby exit without harming myself or anyone else. The dealer said that my torque converter 'grenaded' and then blade pieces blew through the entire transmission and were not present in the transmission fluid. I asked if this was normal for a 5 year old car to need its transmission replaced. The service representative at Ford said 'honestly. . . No, but it is something we have seen before' I then said 'you mean with Escapes?' and the representative said 'yes'. He said that the transmission tech has rebuilt several transmissions in the Escape that were even still under warranty. It is a known problem yet the company has not issued a recall. What about the safety of the drivers? who will hold them accountable?.

12 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2019

The vehicle was stationary and had not been driven for more than 3 hours. I pushed the remote start and the car started, but it shut off almost immediately. The shut down was due to overheating. The engine was cool and the coolant was tepid at best. This is not an overheating issue. The car will not run on more than 2 cylinders. This is the second time this has happened since the recall for the coolant sensor. The car had to be towed to the dealer where I was charged to diagnose the issue. This should be no charge since it was recalled for the overheating issue. This overheating has caused my transmission and torque converter to fail as well. The cost of the transmission should be reimbursed by Ford since they have know about the overheating issue for a long time now.

The contact had not taken the vehicle to be officially diagnosed due to past experiences with other repairs. After hearing the contact's concerns with past diagnoses, the manufacturer referred the contact to NHTSA. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 118,000.

Failure Date: 04/12/2018

Car was occasionally jerking, making a clunking sound when shifting up/down. Then the "transmission fault. " warning came on. Took it to golden Ford Lincoln in camden arkansas. Their diagnostics showed "torque converter input shaft return was restricted and burnt up transmission. " cost us $4962. 62 to replace the transmission, ridiculous! having a total transmission failure with only 71250 miles on a modern car is terrible. At least it didn't fail at speed on the highway.
